At an expected lifespan of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db328-h.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">79 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s almost 200 potential trips to the doctor, coughing fits, and sick days from work in a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to avoid becoming a sickly statistic, it\u2019s worth noting that the places where people often pick up the cold or flu typically have two things in common: crowds and germs. There are nearly 78,000 types of bacteria and viruses in the average <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aem.asm.org\/content\/81\/2\/765\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public restroom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and more germs on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12879-018-3150-5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airport security bins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than you\u2019d probably care to count.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We surveyed more than 1,000 people about their germy pet peeves and the actions most likely to result in contact with germs. Does handwashing mean you\u2019re less likely to catch a cold? What about picking your nose, or using your hand to flush a public toilet? Read on as we break down people\u2019s biggest germ concerns and offer ways to navigate these bacteria-laden environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lifestyles of the sick and feverish<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of surfaces in your home that contain more bacteria than a toilet seat: Look no further than your pet\u2019s food bowl or your smartphone (yeah, it\u2019s pretty gross).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t feel anxious about using public restrooms, however. In fact, it\u2019s usually the surfaces surrounding the toilet\u2014the ones that get covered in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0028132\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sprays of dirty water droplets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014that are the biggest culprits of contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3448\" src=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset1.png 800w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset1-190x300.png 190w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset1-768x1211.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset1-650x1024.png 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps most people aren\u2019t doing enough to keep those bacteria at bay. More than 2 in 5 people admitted to flushing the toilet without first closing the lid. Nearly 1 in 3 also left dirty dishes in the sink, potentially letting a mass of germs (like salmonella) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodprotection.org\/publications\/food-protection-trends\/archive\/2014-09bacterial-occurrence-in-kitchen-hand-towels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pile up in their kitchen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While less common, roughly 1 in 10 people left expired, contaminated food in the fridge, sneezed into their hands and ate without washing, or talked while chewing their food.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Unwritten bacteria code<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more comfortable you are around a person, whether it\u2019s a romantic partner or family member, the more likely your behavior will reflect that comfortability. In addition to skipping a shave session or worrying less about passing gas, you might not be as worried about the spread of germs around people you know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3449\" src=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-2.png 800w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-2-197x300.png 197w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-2-768x1167.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-2-674x1024.png 674w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, 71% of people were willing to drink from the same glass as their partners, and almost 58% were comfortable going back into the same food dish twice. Sadly, the mouth is one of the fastest ways to spread germs, and the love you share won\u2019t prevent you from getting sick if either party is carrying something contagious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While that comfortability diminished among coworkers and strangers, certain actions were still considered unacceptable regardless of the company. Nearly 92% of people said it was never okay to pick your nose and eat the findings (which is risky because of the germs you might be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16874648\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">putting in your nose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than pulling out), and another 88% said the same about improper hand hygiene after going to the bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Preventing germs all together<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If germs really are everywhere (and they are), how can healthy people avoid the nasty bugs that could make you sick?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether these efforts are effective, many people are at least cognizant of the potential of bacterial infections. Nearly 62% of people said they made a conscious effort to avoid sharing drinks with other people. More than half agreed on the value of not touching the exit doorknob in a public restroom, and nearly as many made an effort to flush public toilets with their feet instead of their hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3450\" src=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-3.png 800w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-3-259x300.png 259w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/asset-3-768x888.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are even more things people can do if they want to avoid getting sick. Even though wearing a surgical mask can help prevent picking up airborne illnesses (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including the flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/preparing-for-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), just 6% of respondents wore them around sick people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/infectious-disease.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) reported 15.5 million doctor\u2019s visits and 4.1 million emergency room visits due to infectious diseases in 2016-17. In addition to practicing proper hygiene in areas where germs are spread, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/vaccination-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staying up to date on vaccinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can prevent you and your community from contracting serious illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-information\/\"><b>COVID-19 information station<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Women vs. men: How they avoid germs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women might have a stronger inclination toward staying clean\u2014but avoiding bacteria may not make them any healthier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though they were more likely to avoid sharing drinks, hold their breath while walking past someone coughing, and look away from a public toilet before flushing, women still got sick more often than men. The slight tinge of body aches. Congestion, or even just a runny nose. These are among the most common and telltale signs that your immune system is weakened and you\u2019re getting sick. Public transportation, air travel, big crowds, and even ride-sharing services ranked among the most concerning environments for germs, while family holiday gatherings and get-togethers with close friends were the least worrisome. These fears of germs might not be misplaced, either. One study found 900 times the number of germs in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelmath.com\/feature\/public-transportation-hygiene-exposed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York subway car<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than on a standard airplane tray table. If that isn\u2019t cause for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/does-hand-sanitizer-expire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carrying around hand sanitizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, what is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women were also significantly more worried about air travel, public crowds, and ride-sharing services when it came to germs. Our demographic breakdown used in the project was as follows: 44.9% of our participants were men, and 55.1% were women. Participants ranged in age from 19 to 80. The mean for our age range was 37.4, and the standard deviation was 11.5. Demographics with a sample size below 26 were excluded from our analysis.
