It\u2019s the first antihistamine nasal spray made available without a prescription. This is good news for those looking to combat their seasonal sniffling symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is allergic rhinitis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are estimates that more than 60 million people in the U.S. experience symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis\u2014aka hay fever, or seasonal allergies. And numbers are increasing year over year. Our<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/allergy-survey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 allergy survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 59% of respondents have allergies, with the most common being pollen allergies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic rhinitis develops when the body\u2019s immune system recognizes and overreacts to something in the environment. It can be either seasonal or perennial, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/news\/facts-statistics\/allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACAAI).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis can occur in spring, summer, and\/or early fall. They are usually caused by allergic sensitivity to airborne mold spores or pollens from trees, grass, and weeds. Conversely, perennial allergic rhinitis\u2014which can be caused by dust mites, pet dander, smoke, etc\u2014causes symptoms year-round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of both perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy eyes, mouth, or skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuffy nose due to blockage or congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue (often reported due to poor quality sleep as a result of nasal obstruction)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic rhinitis can be treated with over-the-counter products such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase (fluticasone)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 or with prescriptions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasonex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasonex (mometasone)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azelastine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astelin (azelastine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/patanase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patanase (olopatadine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The FDA\u2019s over-the-counter approval of Astepro nasal spray means allergy sufferers will have one easier\u2014and cheaper\u2014way to go sneeze-free. It\u2019s the first time a steroid-free, antihistamine nasal spray is available over the counter. Previously, only steroid or decongestant nasal sprays could be purchased without a prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While those options are effective at reducing inflammation from an allergy reaction, they can have side effects, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rebound-congestion-nasal-spray-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rebound congestion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from decongestant nasal sprays), with regular use. Antihistamine sprays help stop your body\u2019s histamine reaction (and your sniffling and sneezing) before it starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Astepro?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made by Bayer, Astepro (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azelastine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azelastine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a nasal spray made with 0.15% of the drug azelastine hydrochloride. This active ingredient is spritzed directly in the nose to relieve nasal symptoms such as runny, itchy, and stuffy nose as well as sneezing caused by allergies. It\u2019s approved for adults and children aged 6 years and older.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Astepro work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astepro belongs to a class of drugs called antihistamines. Antihistamines are able to block the effects of a substance called histamine in your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Histamine is a neurotransmitter that is normally released when your body detects something harmful in your body, like an infection. It signals for the body to swell and react in order to protect itself. But sometimes your body mistakes harmless airborne molecules (such as pollen, pet dander, or smoke) for a threat and signals to your systems to produce histamine. The released histamine causes an allergic reaction with the symptoms listed above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines\u2014whether taken orally or with a nasal spray like Astepro\u2014stop the chain reaction that leads to runny noses and non-stop sneezing.
