Too much serotonin can lead to toxicity and symptoms that can range from mildly unpleasant to potentially fatal. Because serotonin syndrome is typically caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspharmacist.com\/article\/drug-induced-serotonin-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or overdoses, the primary treatment is to identify the problematic drugs and discontinue taking them. Elderly patients are particularly vulnerable to low sodium. When taking Lexapro, watch for any symptoms of hyponatremia including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in mental functioning, such as confusion, memory problems, difficulty thinking, or hallucinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsteadiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe hyponatremia can result in seizures or coma.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro and angle-closure glaucoma<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/narrow_angles_a_tip-off_to_eyesight_risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angle-closure glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a serious condition that can happen suddenly and without warning. It occurs when the space between the iris and the cornea (called the drainage angle) becomes narrowed or blocked, which can result in reduced fluid drainage from the eye. Lexapro can dilate the pupils and trigger an angle-closure glaucoma attack. If left untreated, fluid pressure can build up rapidly within the eye, causing vision loss or blindness in a matter of hours. When taking Lexapro, stop taking the drug and immediately go to an emergency room at any sign of angle-closure glaucoma, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling or redness in or around the eye<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro and heart rhythm<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All SSRIs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554406\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can change the heart\u2019s rhythm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in ways easily identifiable on an electrocardiogram (ECG). A doctor will call these changes \u201cQT prolongation\u201d and \u201ctorsade de pointes,\u201d but the point is that the heart is not beating correctly. In severe cases, these changes could cause fatal arrhythmias. Among the SSRIs, the active ingredient in Lexapro (escitalopram) and the active ingredient in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/celexa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celexa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (citalopram) have the greatest effect on heart rhythm. People with heart problems may need to have regular ECGs to monitor Lexapro\u2019s effects on the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro and weight changes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/antidepressants-cause-minimal-weight-gain-201406067202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as weight gain or weight loss, are popularly associated with antidepressants, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=13bb8267-1cab-43e5-acae-55a4d957630a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that Lexapro does not affect weight. Lexapro may, however, slow down growth when given to children.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do Lexapro side effects last<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro side effects are usually temporary. Many, such as dry mouth, headache, and nausea, go away within a couple weeks as the body adjusts to Lexapro. Unfortunately, severe side effects may persist longer. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically resolves within two to three days of discontinuing all medications affecting serotonin, but the most severe cases may take several weeks before symptoms fade. Lexapro\u2019s effects on sodium levels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16896026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will resolve about two weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the medicine is discontinued. Treatment usually involves taking a diuretic and limiting water intake, but severe low sodium levels may require hospitalization. Some of the most severe side effects, such as angle-closure glaucoma, may evolve into chronic and lifetime conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Lexapro contraindications &#038; warnings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like any other drug that affects the central nervous system, Lexapro may cause problems in some people. The use of Lexapro may need to be avoided in certain people depending on their medical condition and other medications they may be taking. Therefore, a healthcare provider should be consulted to determine if Lexapro is an appropriate antidepressant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on animal studies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not consider Lexapro a controlled substance that carries a risk of physical dependence, abuse, or tolerance. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/About-Mental-Illness\/Treatments\/Mental-Health-Medications\/Types-of-Medication\/Escitalopram-(Lexapro)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the drug is harmful when taken over a long period of time, but doctors and other healthcare providers may be advised to monitor people with a history of drug abuse to make sure any prescription Lexapro is not being abused or diverted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overdose of Lexapro can cause serious medical problems, especially if other drugs or alcohol are also involved. A person experiencing a suspected Lexapro overdose should receive immediate medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of potential hazards, some people should never take Lexapro.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with allergies to Lexapro should not take the medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, or MAOI, should not take Lexapro until they\u2019ve been off the MAOI for at least two weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people who can safely take Lexapro, however, may be at an increased risk of side effects or other problems because of pre-existing conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/320003\/Lexapro\/Contradindications-Cautions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In those cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Lexapro is used cautiously and sometimes with extra monitoring to spot problems before they become serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the risk of suicide, <\/span><b>people younger than the age of 25<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking Lexapro should be carefully watched for signs of worsening depression, unusual behaviors, risk-taking, impulsiveness, or suicidality. Any signs of worsening depression or suicidality should be immediately reported to the doctor prescribing Lexapro.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro will require careful dosing and monitoring in people with <\/span><b>liver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> kidney<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or<\/span><b> heart problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People with a history of unusual heart rhythms, congestive heart failure, or heart attack may require regular ECGs to keep track of Lexapro\u2019s effects on the heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the risk of low sodium, Lexapro will require careful dosing and regular monitoring in people with <\/span><b>electrolyte problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>blood volume<\/b> <b>problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><b>people of advanced age<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All antidepressants can turn depression into mania or hypomania in people with <\/span><b>bipolar disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a history of mania. People predisposed to mania will require careful monitoring as they take Lexapro.
