It works by killing harmful bacteria throughout the body. It comes in both capsule and oral suspension form and is usually taken for up to 10 days, depending on the type of infection being treated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, and headache. Serious adverse reactions are less common and include severe allergic reactions, Steven-Johnson\u2019s syndrome, and Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infections. Drug interactions are also possible when taking cefdinir. The rates of diarrhea were highest in patients younger than 2 years old (17%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If diarrhea is severe during treatment with cefdinir, consult your healthcare provider to rule out a C. difficile infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"yeast-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeast infection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir destroys harmful bacteria in the body, but can also destroy the good bacteria. This may result in oral thrush and vaginal yeast infections during treatment with cefdinir.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clinical trial of 5,093 adults and adolescents taking 600 mg of cefdinir per day found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2007\/050739s013,050749s017lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4% of women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced a vaginal yeast infection during treatment. In the same group, there was a 0.2% occurrence of yeast infections unrelated to the vagina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another trial of 2,289 pediatric patients showed vaginal yeast infections in 0.3% of girls being treated with cefdinir and fungal skin infections in 0.9% of all children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/yeast-infection-from-antibiotics\/\"><b>How to prevent yeast infections from antibiotics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of cefdinir<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects while taking cefdinir are rare but possible. These side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stevens-Johnson syndrome: flu-like symptoms accompanied by painful rash and blisters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic epidermal necrolysis: a rare condition causing skin peeling and blistering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exfoliative dermatitis: redness and peeling of large areas of skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile infection causing severe diarrhea and colitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low neutrophils (neutropenia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemolytic anemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aplastic anemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A severe immune reaction (serum sickness)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renal toxicity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver toxicity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"rash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir rash<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several side effects of cefdinir may be accompanied by a rash, including an allergic reaction, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and exfoliative dermatitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical trials reported rash at an incidence of 0.9% in adults and adolescents being treated with cefdinir. Rash occurred in 3% of children taking this medication, although the majority of these occurrences were in children younger than 2 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek emergency medical attention right away if rash-like symptoms are accompanied by wheezing, tightness in the chest or throat, or trouble breathing. This could be a sign of a potentially dangerous allergic reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"c-diff\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment with Cefdinir can destroy some of the bacteria in the gut. This allows other organisms such as C. difficile to grow out of control. C. difficile produces toxins that may cause swelling\/inflammation in the lining of the large intestine. This inflammation is called pseudomembranous colitis. This can cause diarrhea ranging in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent watery diarrhea that is sometimes bloody<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain and tenderness in the stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cramping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/antibiotics-that-cause-c-diff\/\"><b>Antibiotics that cause C.Difficile<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-in-seniors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir side effects in elderly<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with multiple comorbidities may have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcgeriatr.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12877-019-1265-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk of side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when treated with antibiotics, and older adults have more underlying health conditions than younger patients. However, clinical trials found cefdinir to be a safe drug for older patients, with a lower adverse reaction rate compared to young adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do cefdinir side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most cefdinir side effects will subside during or shortly after treatment, although some may require medical attention. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/yeast-infection-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeast infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/oral-thrush-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral thrush<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/clostridium-difficile-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. difficile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are some examples of side effects that may need to be treated with other medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions require immediate medical attention. Signs of a severe allergic reaction include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash or hives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen or blistered areas of skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red, peeling skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, throat, or tongue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/105703\/cefdinir\/Contradindications-Cautions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir may not be appropriate for everyone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Discuss any medical conditions with your healthcare provider before starting treatment, especially if you have ever had:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney disease or a history of dialysis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies to other antibiotics, especially cephalosporins and penicillins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes (oral suspension contains sucralose)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizure disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney disease<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use caution in patients with a creatinine clearance of &lt;30mL\/min. Dosage should be reduced in these patients with kidney problems. There is evidence that cephalosporin antibiotics may cause seizures in patients with renal impairment whose dosage was not reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colitis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use caution in patients with a history of colitis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea may be more severe in these patients if it occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir can increase blood sugar on its own. The liquid form of cefdinir also contains sugar, which may alter blood glucose levels. Diabetic patients should avoid using cefdinir suspension to ensure that blood sugar levels aren\u2019t altered during treatment. Careful glucose monitoring is required when Cefdinir must be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir does not cause dependency or withdrawal symptoms. However, like all antibiotics, if a patient does not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/finish-antibiotics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finish the full course of antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an infection may persist or recur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose on any medication is possible, including cefdinir. Signs of overdose include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Control Center immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir is FDA-approved to treat certain bacterial infections in children as young as 2 months. It may treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ear-infection-in-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial ear infections (otitis media)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, and bacterial skin infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the FDA, cefdinir is a pregnancy category B medication. There is no human data available to measure risk, but animal data shows no known risks or complications of taking cefdinir while pregnant. If you\u2019re pregnant, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about the risks before taking this medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir may be taken while breastfeeding. There is no human data available to determine the risk to the infant, however, no risk is expected based on data from other cephalosporin antibiotics. It is not yet known if cefdinir affects breast milk production.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several drugs and supplements that may interact with cefdinir, according to the FDA. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider what medications, vitamins, and supplements you\u2019re taking before beginning treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Antacids, magnesium, and iron supplements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some antacids or supplements containing iron or magnesium may interfere with cefdinir absorption. Take 2 hours before or after Cefdinir. Patients taking iron may also experience a reddish stool discoloration (not related to bleeding). The reddish color is due to the formation of a complex between cefdinir and iron in the gut.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Probenecid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/probenecid\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probenecid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a uric acid reducer that treats gout, may increase levels of cefdinir in the body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Hormonal contraceptives:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cefdinir may decrease the efficacy of hormonal birth control; use another form of birth control while taking cefdinir.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Tetracyclines:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tetracyclines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tetracyclines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with cefdinir may alter the way cefdinir works inside the body.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid cefdinir side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefdinir may cause side effects, but there are ways to reduce the risk for these undesired effects. Some ways to avoid side effects while taking cefdinir include:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Take cefdinir as directed. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow the medical advice of your healthcare provider and instructions given by your pharmacist. Be sure to shake your liquid cefdinir before use and measure using an appropriate dosing syringe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Take cefdinir with or without food. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to take cefdinir with food, however, taking it with food may decrease stomach discomfort.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t skip doses. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you forget a dose of cefdinir, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it\u2019s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
