In many areas summer weather also means an increase of pollen and pollution that can also affect summer asthma symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of summer asthma<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafa.org\/weather-triggers-asthma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environmental factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can trigger heat-induced asthma symptoms during summer months:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Heat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHeat is associated with poor air quality including high ozone levels, particulates,\u201d says Pierrette Mimi Poinsett, MD, a medical consultant at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/momlovesbest.com\/author\/pierrette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mom Loves Best<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt is the components of poor air quality that trigger asthma. Hot air can also cause airways to narrow, precipitating bronchospasm.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Humidity:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3373066\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that humid air can trigger bronchoconstriction in people who have asthma. The best temperature for someone who has asthma is between 68 to 71\u00b0F with low humidity since this will not constrict their airways. Additionally, \u201chumid air can trap pollutants, pollen, and mold which also triggers asthma,\u201d says Dr. Poinsett.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Extreme weather changes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s lots of heat, sudden rain, or blasts of ultra-cold air from the air conditioning, any drastic environmental condition might exacerbate symptoms. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehjournal.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12940-016-0142-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that asthma symptoms get worse when you\u2019re exposed to extreme heat and precipitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Air pollution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIn heat, we see more airborne pollution that can add to lung stress,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaciamed.org\/who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumana Reddy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a provider at Acacia Family Medical Group in Prunedale, California.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergens:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mold and dust mites thrive in hot humid air, which irritates the lungs and can trigger asthma symptoms. While it may seem like humidity allergies, it\u2019s actually the humidity making the allergens worse to breathe in. \u201cHumid air can trap pollutants, pollen, and mold, which also triggers asthma,\u201d explains Dr. Poinsett.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Thunderstorms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The extreme rain that occurs during thunderstorms can cause pollen to break up. Then, it is easier to breathe in the pollen particles since they are smaller, and those particles irritate the lungs of people with asthma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Smoke: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s from a barbecue, camp fire, or burning wildfires in your area, it\u2019s likely you\u2019re exposed to more outdoor smoke than usual from June through September. Smoke is an asthma trigger any time of year. Outdoor smoke, particularly from wildfires, is associated with respiratory problems, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/co-pulmonarymedicine\/Abstract\/2019\/03000\/Wildfire_smoke_exposure_under_climate_change_.10.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COPD).<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>High ozone levels: \u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozone levels increase as well\u201d during summer months, explains Dr. Reddy. While there\u2019s not conclusive evidence it\u2019s bad for your respiratory system, some studies suggest that high ozone can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0013935117308691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exacerbate asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/jes201639\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen lung function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with asthma <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those without. \u201cIn these cases use your<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other short acting inhaler,\u201d Dr. Reddy says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The common theme? The outdoor air is a little more difficult to breathe during the summer because of the factors above, and that can exacerbate asthma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-attack-triggers\/\"><b>6 asthma attack triggers<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 ways to manage asthma in the summer heat and humidity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often for chronic respiratory conditions, like asthma, prevention of flare-ups is the best treatment. \u201cPreventative measures include using air conditioners to reduce humidity and pollution, changing the air condition filter every season, having your rescue inhaler available at all times and using it when there is cough or chest tightness,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/progressivepediatrics.com\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noha Polack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a pediatrician at Progressive Pediatrics in Union City, New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Poinsett and Dr. Reddy recommend the following steps to manage asthma and avoid triggers during the summer months:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Have an<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/viral-induced-asthma-flare\/\"><b>asthma action plan<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you create with your healthcare provider. This is a very specific document that is based on the numbers when you breathe into a peak flow meter and your symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Monitor your peak flows<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or your ability to push air out of your lungs based on your action plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Use your rescue medications <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as needed for flare-ups and always carry it with you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Follow weather reports that address air quality and pollen counts. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the air quality is poor, avoid spending a lot of time outdoors. The same goes for high pollen count, which is usually in the mornings from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. If you do go outside, take a shower when you go indoors to remove any pollen that may be on your body, clothes, or hair.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Use<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasonex\"><b>nasal steroid spray<\/b><\/a><b> and<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-d-allergy-congestion\"><b>oral antihistamine medications<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regularly to help with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/8-ways-treat-seasonal-allergies\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or, try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saline-nasal-spray\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saline nasal washes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during times of high pollen counts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stay hydrated.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dehydration may lead to faster breathing and worsening exposure to the allergens.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Wear a particulate filter mask <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if any concern of fires or other extreme air pollution events.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Optimize your indoor air.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use a dehumidifier and an air conditioner with clean air filters.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cControlling allergies is an important part of avoiding asthma flare-ups,\u201d Dr. Reddy says. \u201cMany people do not realize that untreated or ignored allergies can be a source of their tiredness or difficulty with exercise. Sometimes asthma can be as subtle as feeling more shortness of breath while exercising and we can ignore it thinking that we are just out of shape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/asthma-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Asthma treatments and medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When should you see a healthcare provider?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDuring the summer months if you notice a decreased peak flow based on your action plan then you would need to seek out a doctor&#8217;s care,\u201d Dr. Poinsett says. She also recommends seeing your healthcare provider if you notice the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your symptoms do not improve after taking medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have increased coughing or wheezing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need increased use of your inhaler.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your symptoms cause you to wake up in the middle of the night.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to have regular checkups with your healthcare provider regarding your asthma management and frequent communication with your healthcare provider if you are concerned about any of your symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people love the warmer weather that summer brings.
