As an anti-seizure medication, gabapentin is used along with other antiepileptic drugs to help control partial seizures in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/epilepsy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epilepsy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also used to relieve postherpetic neuralgia, a type of nerve pain caused by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/shingles-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shingles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the only two approved uses of gabapentin, but gabapentin is most often prescribed off-label as a non-opioid alternative for nerve pain, postoperative pain, pain due to injury, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fibromyalgia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fibromyalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/restless-leg-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restless legs syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RLS), and other medical conditions. However, gabapentin does have side effects and may not be right for everyone. Before taking gabapentin, carefully review possible side effects, any pre-existing conditions it may worsen, drug interactions, and ways to avoid problems when taking this id=\"serious-side-effects\">Common side effects of gabapentin<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most serious side effects of gabapentin include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts and behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slow breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin and impairment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin\u2019s neurological side effects can cause significant impairment. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9e4eca9c-6a2c-4ede-a252-1a27094bf594#s5.8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gabapentin\u2019s clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sedation, characterized by drowsiness, sleepiness, or tiredness, affected 20\u201330% of people, while dizziness was reported by close to 20% of trial participants. Double vision was reported in 8% of people taking gabapentin for nerve pain. Other vision impairments such as lazy eye, nystagmus (uncontrolled eye movements), and blurred vision were reported by at least one in 50 participants. Coordination issues affected one in 50 patients. Difficulty thinking, problems walking, and slurred speech were also experienced. Not surprisingly, accidental injury was reported by up to 3% of clinical trial participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taking gabapentin, be careful to monitor its effects on attention, coordination, judgment, and vision. Daily activities may need to be modified and some may need to be curtailed altogether. There may be a risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dovepress.com\/gabapentin-enacarbil-for-the-treatment-of-moderate-to-severe-primary-r-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-NDT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">driving impairment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which carries the risk of a DUI citation. If mental impairment or vision problems significantly interfere with daily activities, talk to a doctor or other healthcare professional about alternatives to gabapentin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do gabapentin side effects last<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a half-life of five hours <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2011\/020235s050,020882s035,021129s033lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and five to seven hours <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/3446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common side effects, such as dizziness and somnolence, will improve 12\u201324 hours after the last dose is taken. Severe muscle damage and severe allergic reactions may take several days of hospital treatment to resolve. Gabapentin withdrawal typically lasts about seven days but could last longer if the drug is not being taken as directed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Gabapentin contraindications &amp; warnings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin changes the way the nervous system works, so it may cause problems in some people. Some people may not be able to take gabapentin because of underlying medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is a controlled substance in many states. Some people abuse gabapentin for its sedative effects, particularly in combination with other drugs. Gabapentin causes withdrawal symptoms when taken in high doses or over a long period of time. Healthcare providers are advised to monitor people with a history of drug abuse to watch for signs of gabapentin misuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard dose of gabapentin ranges from 300 to 1200 mg taken three times daily. The maximum FDA-approved dose is 3,600 mg a day. An overdose can be a medical emergency. If too much gabapentin is taken, symptoms will resemble alcohol intoxication:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Double vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slurred speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered mental status<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If large amounts of gabapentin are taken, breathing can become slow and shallow. People have died of respiratory distress due to gabapentin overdose. Anyone with allergies to gabapentin will not be able to take the medication. Other people may be able to take gabapentin, but they may have an increased risk of side effects or other issues due to pre-existing conditions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/102103\/gabapentin\/Contradindications-Cautions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In those cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a healthcare provider will use gabapentin cautiously and some patients may need to be monitored closely.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the risk of suicidal thoughts, <\/span><b>people with depression or a history of suicide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may need to be monitored for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Suicidality is a greater risk when gabapentin is used to treat epilepsy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin will require reduced doses in people with <\/span><b>kidney problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gabapentin is cleared from the body primarily through the kidneys, so kidney dysfunction raises the risk of side effects. Those with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) below 30 mL\/min should not take extended-release gabapentin, but they can still take reduced doses of immediate-release gabapentin.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because gabapentin slows down breathing, those with <\/span><b>lung problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may need to be monitored when taking gabapentin.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pregnant women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should talk to a healthcare provider to weigh the benefits and risks of taking gabapentin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9e4eca9c-6a2c-4ede-a252-1a27094bf594#s5.8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that gabapentin can cause birth defects, but there is no evidence that gabapentin causes birth defects or miscarriage in humans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nursing women<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can take gabapentin but should inform the prescribing doctor or healthcare professional about breastfeeding when receiving a prescription. Gabapentin is present in breast milk, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/102113\/gabapentin\/Pregnancy-Lactation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is no evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that gabapentin harms a breastfeeding infant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is only FDA-approved for <\/span><b>children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 years or older to prevent seizures. All other use in children is off-label and has not been determined as safe or effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is safe and effective for <\/span><b>people older than 65<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although dose adjustments may be necessary if kidney function is reduced.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects\">Gabapentin interactions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods do not disrupt the absorption or effectiveness of gabapentin. However, other prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, or dietary supplements may interact with gabapentin and worsen side effects or reduce the benefits of gabapentin.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with a seizure disorder, gabapentin is never combined with the anxiety medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wellbutrin-sr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bupropion-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bupropion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the muscle disorder medications amifampridine and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dalfampridine-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dalfampridine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the antinausea drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metoclopramide-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metoclopramide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the immune-suppressing antibody muromonab-cd3.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other drugs that can also lower the seizure threshold include <\/span><b>antipsychotics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>stimulants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are a small family of drugs that treat depression, Parkinson\u2019s disease, or bacterial infections. In people prone to seizures, combining these drugs with gabapentin will require monitoring.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin is a central nervous system depressant. It slows down the brain and causes sedation and dizziness, raising the risk of accidental injury. Other CNS depressants can worsen mental and visual impairment caused by gabapentin. These include <\/span><b>alcohol<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>cannabinoids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (marijuana), <\/span><b>sleeping aids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>anxiolytics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (drugs that reduce anxiety), <\/span><b>sedatives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>opioids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>tricyclic antidepressants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>antinausea drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>antihistamines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>seizure medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some types of <\/span><b>antibiotics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antacids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>bile acid sequestrants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may affect the body\u2019s ability to absorb gabapentin when taken orally. As a general rule, wait at least <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two hours<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after taking an antacid before taking a dose of gabapentin. Take gabapentin at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Neurontin-gabapentin-2477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one hour before or four hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after taking a bile acid sequestrant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\">How to avoid gabapentin side effects<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabapentin side effects, such as sedation and dizziness, are commonly experienced, but many other side effects are possible. There are a few measures people can take to minimize side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Take gabapentin as directed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the dose as prescribed, usually 300\u20131,200 mg taken three times daily.
