In fact, acne treatment for teens has evolved over the years. There are safe options available over the counter. \u201cThe strategies we use to treat acne in teens are more tolerable than in the past and not as irritating to the skin,\u201d says Debra Jaliman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, assistant professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and author of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Skin Rules<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWith a combination of topicals and lasers, acne has become less difficult to treat and today\u2019s treatments are definitely more effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is teenage acne?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/media\/stats-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annually, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Acne has different forms. It can appear as blemishes like blackheads, whiteheads, pimples (aka pustules), and even as cysts. While most\u00a0 outgrow teen acne, it can cause embarrassment for adolescents. Social media campaigns such as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/freethepimple_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#freethepimple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which launched in 2018 works to destigmatize acne and encourages teens to love their skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of acne<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acne is attributed to a variety of factors from hormonal changes to family history. The following can trigger or worsen skin problems:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stress: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStress plays a role in breakouts, since hormones, like cortisol, increase oil production and prompt acne breakouts,\u201d says Dr. Jaliman. \u201cDecreasing stress through meditation, exercise and other lifestyle changes can help prevent stress acne.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetics: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study found teens with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16484821\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family history of acne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more prone to developing acne. The good news is even though acne is hereditary, it\u2019s treatable. The sooner teens begin treatment, the sooner they will see results.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hormones:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hormonal acne is caused by fluctuations in hormones during puberty. This triggers a buildup of sebum, which can lead to whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weather:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hot, humid, and tropical conditions make acne worse. \u201cWhen it is very hot there is an overgrowth of bacteria; this tends to break the skin out,\u201d Dr. Jaliman says. In order to beat hot weather breakouts, use lighter water-based lotions and oil-free sunscreens, keep the face clean and free of sweat, and stay hydrated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain foods and beverages:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Diets high in sugar, processed foods, and dairy can contribute to acne breakouts. To combat this, aim to eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes inflammation-fighting foods such as colorful fruits and vegetables, omega-3 fat sources (such as fish and chia seeds), and unsweetened beverages like water or green tea.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople who eat a high dairy diet or a high glycemic diet where they eat a lot of processed sugar can get acne,\u201d Dr. Jaliman says. \u201cIn this case, we ask people to decrease their dairy intake and suggest they take calcium supplements. In the case of excess sugar, we recommend eating natural fruit sugar and eliminating chocolate, donuts, candy, white pasta, and white bread from their diet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best acne treatment for teens<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most teens should have a daily skincare routine, as it is the rare teen that does not suffer from acne. To treat mild to moderate acne or occasional breakouts, start with over-the-counter (OTC) acne products. Use a gentle cleanser twice daily. Do not pick or pop pimples.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Cleanser<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose a gentle face wash that has ingredients such as glycerin, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid that don\u2019t strip away your skin\u2019s natural oils,\u201d Dr. Jaliman advises. \u201cAvoid toners with alcohol, and use micellar water instead. Stay away from products containing oils.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Benzoyl peroxide<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzoyl peroxide, which comes in many strengths and in a gel or cream, can unclog pores, treat existing acne and prevent breakouts. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benzoyl-peroxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzoyl peroxide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kills bacteria that causes acne and removes excess oil and dead skin cells.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Salicylic acid<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salicylic and glycolic acid can both be used to unclog pores. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/neutrogena-oil-free-acne-wash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combines salicylic acid with a gentle cleanser to prevent and treat acne.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Differin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/differin\">Differin (adapalene<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mild-retinol cream is another option. This treatment targets clogged pores and inflammation, clears breakouts and prevents new acne. This treatment is now available over the counter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Vitamins<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23826827\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the blood levels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zinc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin E<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people who had acne and those who did not. The researchers found the levels of all these vitamins were significantly lower in those with acne and concluded that a diet rich in these nutrients might prevent or treat acne. Before taking a vitamin supplement, consult with a healthcare provider or pharmacist about appropriate dosage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Topical anti-inflammatories<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products like hydrocortisone may help to reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne, but do not decrease acne.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Moisturizer with SPF<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing a daily facial SPF is important. Acne-prone skin is sensitive to the sun. Skincare treatments can also make skin more prone to get sunburned. Sunburns lead to both wrinkles and skin cancer.\u00a0 \u201cLook for a brand that is non-comedogenic and shown not to clog pores,\u201d says Dr. Jaliman. Some of the newer mineral sunscreens are oil-free and non-comedogenic products, making them a perfect option for acne-prone skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re not seeing results after three weeks, or you see acne scarring, you should make an appointment with a dermatologist,\u201d says Dr. Jaliman. This can help determine if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/acne-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription-strength, severe acne treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may provide a better solution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Retinoids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At night I recommend prescription <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/retin-a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retin A (isotretinoin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hyaluronic-acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyaluronic acid serum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Diane Madfes, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at the Madfes Aesthetic Medical Center in New York City. \u201cThe combination of gentle exfoliation and a retinoid, while maintaining the epidermal barrier covers all aspects of acne prevention.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/retinoids\"><b>Learn more about retinoids<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Oral antibiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically the medications prescribed are tetracyclines, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxycycline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or macrolides, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Birth control<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combination <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-for-acne\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> containing estrogen and progesterone can help with acne treatment. Ortho Tri-Cyclen, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/yaz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/estrostep-fe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estrostep Fe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/beyaz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyaz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are FDA approved for acne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. Prescription topical treatments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-office procedures such as chemical peels and lasers can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/acne-scar-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat acne scarring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn many cases, oral medication of niacin, oral antibiotics, birth control, or vitamin A may be prescribed,\u201d Dr. Madfes says. \u201cWe work to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/spironolactone-for-acne\/\"><b>Spironolactone for cystic acne<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent acne<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we can\u2019t control our genetics and hormonal fluctuations, we can control what we put on our skin, what we eat, and our individual skincare routine,\u201d Dr. Madfes says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jaliman, agrees, adding: \u201cKeeping your face clean and making sure to cleanse and remove makeup properly before bedtime is important in keeping pimples away. Try not to touch your face with your hands since bacteria gets on your skin from dirty hands and can cause pimples.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other tips for treating acne include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be mindful of masks. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the pandemic came masks, but Dr. Madfes says it\u2019s possible to wear a mask, without getting acne. \u201cMaskne comes from the rubbing in the area and extra moisture,\u201d Dr. Madfes says. \u201cCleansing with mild acid cleansers and restoring the barrier with an antioxidant serum prevents the problem.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wear the right makeup. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMakeup can be a wonderful way to boost self-confidence to cover acne,\u201d Dr. Madfes says. \u201cAlways apply makeup to a clean face and look for brands that are non-comedogenic.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Practice healthy habits.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In addition to reducing stress, getting a good night\u2019s sleep, exercising regularly and exchanging processed foods and fast food entrees for fresh, healthy meals can go a long way in improving acne and also overall health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ask your physician for help.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Most physicians, including pediatricians and family physicians, treat acne often. There are many different treatments for acne. It may take six to eight weeks to see the benefit from treatment. If the first treatment does not work, try another one.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a year without in person schooling, seeing peers for the first time can be even more difficult with acne.
