Many health problems can be aggravated by the heat and the potential dehydration that goes along with all that extra sweating. On top of that, you can still catch a summer cold or flu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how can you stay healthy and still have fun in the sun? You\u2019ll need awareness of potential issues\u2014and a little bit of preparation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens when your body overheats?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your body stays cool in the summer heat by sweating. But, if you are too hot for an extended period of time, it can lead to problems such as dehydration and an inability to properly cool off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hot weather causes increased sweating and increased risk of dehydration if fluid loss is not adequately replaced,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/194560-julia-rachel-blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Blank, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the heat entering your body is greater than the heat you can dissipate by sweating, that extreme heat can disrupt thermoregulation and raise your core body temperature. Then, you&#8217;re at risk for a heat-related illness such as heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke. The effects of heat on the body include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy sweating, at first<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red or itchy skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirst<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eadache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness or lack of coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle cramps<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In severe cases, where the body\u2019s heat regulatory mechanisms are overwhelmed and fail, this can lead to heat stroke. Symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-palpitations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palpitations<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red, hot skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness, fainting, or loss of consciousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion, slurred speech, or altered mental state<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A temperature of 103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle twitching<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHeat stroke is a medical emergency and its early signs and symptoms must be treated immediately,\u201d Dr. Blank says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heat-illness\/\"><b>Types of heat-related illnesses<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is most at risk for summer health concerns?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important for everyone to be aware of hot weather health risks, but there are some who are especially vulnerable when temperatures rise in the summer, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babies and small children\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who work outdoors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with chronic diseases and\/or conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 medical conditions exacerbated by heat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When temperatures rise in the summer, it can put a strain on the body; especially for those who deal with chronic conditions. Summer health concerns can include conditions that are affected by excessive heat, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#autoimmune-conditions\">Autoimmune conditions<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#asthma\">Asthma, COPD, and allergies<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#migraines\">Migraines<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#heart-disease\">Heart disease<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#arthritis\">Arthritis<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"autoimmune-conditions\">1. Autoimmune disease<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer heat may trigger flare-ups of symptoms in those with autoimmune disorders. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some health conditions like autoimmune diseases can worsen with heat exposure,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/maggiecadetmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggie Cadet, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a New York\u2013ba<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sed rheumatologist and associate attending at NYU Langone Medical Center. Autoimmune diseases that can be affected by summer heat include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/multiple-sclerosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple sclerosis (MS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/lupus-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lupus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/arthritis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis (RA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even slight elevations in core body temperature can worsen symptoms of MS. \u201cMultiple sclerosis, which is a neurological disease, can flare (affecting vision) when the body&#8217;s temperature increases from hot weather, hot tubs, or exercise (Uhthoff&#8217;s phenomenon),\u201d Dr. Cadet says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-lupus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lupus flares<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be triggered with extreme heat and UVA and UVB rays exposure because of decreased clearance of dead skin cells by the body and therefore promoting the body&#8217;s immune response,\u201d Dr. Cadet says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Cadet recommends that individuals with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases avoid sun exposure during the hottest times of the day to help prevent fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, and joint swelling. \u201cGo for a walk either early in the morning or close to sunset,\u201d she suggests. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"asthma\">2. Asthma, COPD, and allergies<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain respiratory conditions can be aggravated by the summer heat. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher temperatures contribute to the buildup of harmful air pollutants, which can aggravate breathing problems,\u201d Dr. Blank explains. Hot and humid weather, air pollution, and pollen are all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/asthma-attack-triggers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triggers for asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/copd-vs-asthma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/allergy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention is key to avoiding respiratory triggers in the summertime. \u201cCheck pollen counts\/air quality alerts before heading outdoors, and consider staying indoors with windows closed if pollen counts are high or air quality is poor,\u201d Dr. Blank says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"migraines\">3. Migraine<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/what-is-migraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Migraine Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, migraine headaches are a debilitating neurological disease. Symptoms can vary depending on the type, from head pain and sensitivity to light to nausea or vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the summertime, excessive heat can cause dehydration, which is a major trigger for headaches and migraines. When it\u2019s hot, it can be harder to stay hydrated. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake, as these are diuretics and can cause more dehydration,\u201d Dr. Blank says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/migraine-definition\/\"><b>What is migraine?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heart-disease\">4. Heart disease and heart arrhythmias<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hot temperatures in the summer months can put a strain on the body, especially those with heart conditions. \u201cBeing physically active in the heat or becoming dehydrated increases strain on the heart,\u201d warns Dr. Blank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, some medications used to treat heart disease such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remove fluid from the body, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dehydration-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes an increased risk for dehydration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you take your medications as prescribed, and seek medical care for any symptoms\/signs that your chronic condition is getting worse,\u201d Dr. Blank says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-heat-intolerance\/\"><b>Medications that make you sensitive to the heat<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"arthritis\">5. Arthritis<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather affects our bodies in myriad ways, and many with arthritis report a worsening of symptoms during changing weather patterns. While rainy and cold weather seems to be a trigger for many, hot temperatures can make symptoms worse for others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theories as to why this occurs include changes in barometric pressure, as well as changes in activity levels during excessively cold or hot weather as keeping active is known to relieve pain in those with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/types-of-arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hot weather health tips<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re vulnerable to the summer heat, you don\u2019t have to miss out on all outdoor fun. A few precautions can let you enjoy this season while minimizing your risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Wear appropriate clothing for hot temperatures.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That includes light, breathable fabrics, loose clothing, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and light colors that won\u2019t absorb extra heat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTry being outside very early or close to sunset,\u201d Dr. Cadet recommends.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Apply (and reapply) sunscreen.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Choose at least an SPF 30.
