Immunosuppressants or biologic medications may be prescribed if other treatments are ineffective. Remicade (infliximab) is a biologic medication, also classified as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29027257\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TNF-alpha inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that may be prescribed for ulcerative colitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4608637\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 20% of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with ulcerative colitis will require a total colectomy, or surgical removal of the entire colon. Experimental treatments are currently being studied for ulcerative colitis, such as heparin and butyrate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn&#8217;s<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for Crohn\u2019s disease also depends on the severity of the disease. Aminosalicylate agents and corticosteroids are first-line treatments for Crohn\u2019s disease. Immunosuppressants or biologic agents may be prescribed for those who are uncontrolled with aminosalicylates and corticosteroids. Immunosuppressants, like Purinethol (mercaptopurine), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imuran\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imuran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (azathioprine), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trexall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trexall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (methotrexate), or biologics, such as Remicade (infliximab), may be necessary for those with moderate to severe disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgery may be required for patients who develop fistulas.
