Not so fast! If you take any daily pills\u2014prescription or over-the-counter\u2014check with your pharmacist first. Certain medications that cause sun sensitivity and heat illness can ruin a day of fun in the sun, and have dangerous side effects as temperatures skyrocket.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-heat-intolerance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is heat intolerance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as hypersensitivity to the heat, heat intolerance is more than just feeling uncomfortable when temperatures rise. It\u2019s a condition that occurs when your body can\u2019t regulate its temperature properly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it gets hotter outside, the hypothalamus in your brain sends messages through your nerves that tell your skin to cool off by sweating. When the moisture evaporates off your skin, it decreases your core temperature. Blood pressure medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain prescription treatments for high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can put you at higher risk of heat intolerance. This is especially true for two types of medications: thiazide diuretics and beta blockers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"thiazide-diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thiazide diuretics\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications, called diuretics, force fluid out of our bodies through our kidneys to control high blood pressure and heart failure,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/199050-david-michael-cutler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Cutler, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, family medicine physician at Santa Monica Family Physicians in California. \u201cThese medications could cause dehydration, a potentially grave danger in hot weather.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thiazide diuretics, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chlorthalidone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorthalidone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydrochlorothiazide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microzide (hydrochlorothiazide)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are known to have this effect. Additionally, recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6436572\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found that hydrochlorothiazide, as well as combination drugs, may increase the risk of certain types of skin cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metoprolol-succinate-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toprol XL (metoprolol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/propranolol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inderal (propranolol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can decrease blood flow to the skin, which can inhibit sweating. \u201cIt mainly has to do with how the blood flows to the skin,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doximity.com\/pub\/dawn-shill-pharmacist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn Shill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., a pharmacist for the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Anchorage, Alaska. \u201cThe blood vessels don\u2019t dilate as they should to allow heat to escape with certain blood pressure medications. By constricting blood flow, the body can\u2019t regulate temperature as much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both effects make it harder for your body to cool off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"other-blood-pressure-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other blood pressure medications<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these medications, other medications used to lower blood pressure can cause severe sunburn and skin irritation. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcium channel blockers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amlodipine-besylate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amlodipine<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/losartan-potassium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">losartan<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE inhibitors like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lisinopril\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lisinopril<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking one of these medications and can\u2019t avoid sun exposure, it is recommended that you use sunscreen with an SPF of over 30 and wear protective clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You take a daily dose of an antihistamine such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl (diphenhydramine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to manage your seasonal allergies. This over-the-counter treatment is very effective at stopping sniffling, sneezing, and itchy eyes. But did you know some of the same medications can prevent you from sweating? Combine that with the summer sun, and it can increase your chances of overheating. This effect is more common with first-generation antihistamines, like Benadryl. Second-generation antihistamines, such as Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra, are less likely to have this effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntihistamines produce an anticholinergic effect commonly referred to as a \u2018drying\u2019 effect,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/author\/kristi-torres\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristi Torres<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., a member of the SingleCare Medical Review Board. \u201cThe same mechanism that allows antihistamines to slow mucus production is also responsible for your body producing less sweat. When your body is not able to sweat, it is difficult to regulate your internal temperature in the face of high external temperatures.\u201d If this is a concern, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist to help you select an appropriate antihistamine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/taking-antihistamines-daily\/\"><b>Can I take antihistamines every day?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-decongestants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Decongestants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting sick is likely the last thing you\u2019re thinking about in the summer. But, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/summer-cold\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colds can strike year-round<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even in warm weather. If you\u2019re all stuffed up and reaching for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-sinus-congestion-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed (pseudoephedrine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may need to postpone your pool day for some good old-fashioned rest and relaxation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDecongestants work the same way as blood pressure medications, decreasing the blood flow to the skin,\u201d Dr. Shill says. That can be dangerous on an already hot day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-overactive-bladder-treatments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Overactive bladder treatments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticholinergics block the action of involuntary muscle movements that can make you feel like you need the restroom when you don\u2019t. That\u2019s a positive when you\u2019re dealing with incontinence or poor bladder control. Unfortunately, they have a side effect that can spell trouble in the summer. Medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxybutynin-chloride\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ditropan (oxybutynin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tolterodine-tartrate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detrol (tolterodine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can reduce sweating, which reduces your ability to cool off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-stimulant-medications-for-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Stimulant medications for ADHD<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain prescriptions that treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) fall into a class of medications known as stimulants. This includes well-known medications such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall-xr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall (amphetamine\/dextroamphetamine)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin (methylphenidate)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These drugs raise your body temperature, increasing the risk of heat intolerance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, they physically constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the skin. \u201cIn the heat, blood flow needs to be increased to the skin in order to cool the body down,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Puopolo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, board-certified physician and chief medical officer of LifeMD. Stimulant medications can prevent that reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-psychiatric-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Psychiatric medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications used to treat certain mental health conditions and Parkinson\u2019s disease all have one thing in common: They affect the hypothalamus. Since this region of the brain is essential to cooling, it can inhibit your ability to reduce body temperature on hot days. These medications can also decrease your thirst reflex, increasing dehydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many different types of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/humanservices\/dmhas\/publications\/miscl\/Sum_%20Ht_SunRisks_bw.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychiatric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescriptions that can lead to heat intolerance or an exaggerated reaction to the sun<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antipsychotics such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/haloperidol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haldol (haloperidol)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chlorpromazine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thorazine (chlorpromazine)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dopaminergics such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carbidopa-levodopa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinemet (carbidopa\/levodopa)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amitriptyline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elavil (amitriptyline)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pamelor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pamelor (nortriptyline)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain other antidepressants, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wellbutrin-xl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin (bupropion)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"7-steroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Steroids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15910167\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corticosteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can cause us to sweat more or change how blood circulates in our skin, dysregulating how our bodies control temperature. For people on long-term steroid treatment, this often means feeling extra sensitive to heat and a higher risk of heat-related issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-thyroid-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Thyroid medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8808101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications for thyroid disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levothyroxine-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthroid (levothyroxine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for hypothyroidism, you might notice you\u2019re more intolerant to heat. These medications can boost your metabolism and energy use, which sometimes leads to too much thyroid hormone in the body. The result? You experience excessive sweating and feel warmer than usual, even in places where you\u2019d typically be comfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-chemotherapy-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Chemotherapy drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2023\/08\/230816134651.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chemotherapy drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxorubicin-hcl-liposomal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doxil (doxorubicin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or cyclophosphamide, can interfere with internal heat regulation. These drugs might make it harder for your body to sweat or change how you perceive temperature, making you feel uncomfortable in warm conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"11-hormonal-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. Cholesterol-lowering medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statins, such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, pravastatin, and lovastatin,\u00a0 are commonly prescribed to treat high cholesterol and lower the risk of heart attack. These medications can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geisinger.org\/health-and-wellness\/wellness-articles\/2024\/08\/08\/13\/40\/sun-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photosensitivity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in an itchy, painful rash after sun exposure and increasing sunburn risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take any of the above, talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist before planning a picnic in the heat of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"13-antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13. Antibiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they won\u2019t make you sensitive to high temperatures, certain antibiotics can make you more sensitive to the sun and likely to burn.
