Kids may also experience both academic and social stressors, like deadlines for assignments or who to sit with in the cafeteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-back-to-school-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is back-to-school anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 4.4 million children aged 3-17 have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, according to the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And heading back to school can trigger an upswing in symptoms for many.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew survey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found 61% of teens say they feel a lot of pressure to get good grades. \u201cFor some kids school can be a scary transition after a summer of freedom,\u201d says<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Sanders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LSW, a clinical social worker and certified parent coach. \u201cSome of the stress is driven by the child&#8217;s own inner thoughts and sometimes the stress is driven by the parents&#8217; outward pressures.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stress-statistics\/\"><b>Stress statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"why-does-school-cause-stress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does school cause stress?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some causes of school <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/stress-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic responsibilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social pressures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extracurricular activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transitions between classes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sports<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/cyberbullying-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bullying<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School shootings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual orientation discrimination<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"signs-of-back-to-school-stress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of back-to-school stress<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids may not know what they are feeling, and they often don\u2019t tell you they are stressed or anxious. So how do you know if your child is experiencing back-to-school stress or anxiety? Indicators of anxiety vary depending on your child\u2019s age and personality. Common signs or symptoms of anxiety are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability, mood swings, excessive crying, or changes in personality<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in sleep patterns, such as difficulty falling asleep or sleeping too much<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in eating patterns, such as refusing to eat or overeating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive questions related to going back-to-school<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent physical complaints, such as stomach aches or headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoidance of discussions about going back-to-school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can help our kids by teaching them to notice early warning signs so that they don\u2019t turn into big ones,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/mariasandersparentcoach.com\/\">Sanders<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-surprising-ways-stress-affects-your-body\/\"><b>5 surprising ways stress can affect your body<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-help-your-child-s-back-to-school-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to help your child\u2019s back-to-school anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child is displaying some of these symptoms or expressed feeling anxious about going back to school there are ways to ease their fears. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanders recommends that parents recognize their own parental stress and anxiety about their child going back to school.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-discuss-your-child-s-concerns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Discuss your child\u2019s concerns<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child doesn\u2019t want to return to school, figure out what your child likes about school. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School is such a dynamic and multifaceted construct,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvilleneuroandsleep.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Winter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, neurologist and sleep specialist \u200bat Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rested Child. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFiguring out that your child likes reading, physical education, and chess club, but does not like math quizzes or the boy that sits next to him in a certain class can help parents and teachers optimize the environment for their child.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanders recommends discussing the issue with your child by using an approach called collaborative problem-solving (CPS). \u201cThe parent tries to understand the child&#8217;s perspective and concerns. Then the parent and child can work together to come up with a mutually satisfactory solution that works for everyone,\u201d Sanders says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/talking-to-children-about-mental-health\/\"><b>Talking to children about their mental health<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-maintain-a-regular-sleep-schedule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Maintain a regular sleep schedule<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that school-age children sleep nine to 12 hours per day. Dr. Winter also stresses the importance of sleep in reducing anxiety and stress. \u201cPoor quality sleep or inadequate sleep exacerbates anxiety,\u201d Dr. Winter says. \u201cIt reduces coping mechanisms, makes kids more emotionally labile, and increases cortisol and arousal states in general. Getting more sleep can help to bolster coping mechanisms and facilitate a more even mood.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids should start adjusting their sleep schedule weeks before school starts to align with when they need to wake up for school. \u201cFocus on the wake time and slowly moving it earlier as the start of school gets closer,\u201d says Dr. Winter. \u201cConsider light exposure and make sure your kids are getting plenty of it in the morning along with food and exercise as soon as they awaken. Try meditation or yoga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31083878\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found yoga reduces symptoms of stress and anxiety.\u00a0 Yoga uses physical and mental exercises that help to relax your mind and body. Yoga also helps calm the mind by regulating your breath. Meditation can help your child feel present in the moment, safe in their own body, and quiet anxious thoughts. There are meditation and yoga programs available that are geared toward school-age kids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-visit-the-school\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Visit the school<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visiting the school over the summer may help ease fears and anxieties, especially if your child is going to a new school. Schedule a tour with the guidance counselor and ask to meet the teachers. If you are concerned about your child\u2019s anxiety, consult your child\u2019s healthcare provider. Sanders says, \u201cIf your child\u2019s anxiety is interfering with their ability to socialize with their friends or participate in the sports or after school activities then it might be a good time to set up an appointment with a mental health therapist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be treated using the following medications, prescribed by a physician or psychiatrist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs and SNRIs are two well-researched classes of psychotropic medicines. They are considered effective and safe for pediatric anxiety disorders. Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine) and Effexor (venlafaxine) were researched and found to be superior to placebo in the treatment of pediatric anxiety. Among the SNRIs, clinical trials suggest that Effexor XR (venlafaxine SR), in particular, is effective for these disorders. A 2015 trial suggested that duloxetine especially benefits pediatric patients with generalized anxiety disorder.
