Let\u2019s take a look at some arthritis statistics to better understand what this chronic condition is, who it affects, how to prevent it, and how it can be treated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is arthritis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis, or joint disease, is inflammation of one or more joints, such as the knees, knuckles, wrists, or ankles. Symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/health-wellness\/healthy-living\/managing-pain\/understanding-pain\/sources-of-arthritis-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 different types of arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Osteoarthritis, a type commonly associated with aging, is the most common overall. Other types of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus-related arthritis, are autoimmune diseases that can affect people of different ages. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common autoimmune form of arthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis is typically diagnosed after a series of physical exams, blood tests, and X-rays. Doctors will look for signs and symptoms of different forms of arthritis and may run tests to determine what kind of arthritis someone has. Changes suggestive of arthritis are seen on X-rays and other imaging studies. Blood tests may be used to check for antibodies that indicate autoimmune forms of arthritis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is arthritis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the 2022 National Health Interview Survey, about 19% of adults have arthritis. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americashealthrankings.org\/explore\/measures\/Arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Health Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 53 to 67 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with arthritis. (Arthritis,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cdi\/indicator-definitions\/arthritis.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2025\/24_0393.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers estimate that up to 37 million people may have undiagnosed arthritis in the U.S.\u00a0 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/news\/arthritis-prevalence-study\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2040, an estimated 78 million U.S. adults will have arthritis. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27015600\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis &amp; Rheumatology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2016)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"most-common-types-of-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most common types of arthritis<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have identified more than 100 conditions that cause joint inflammation. (CDC, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/types-of-arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common types of arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include rheumatoid arthritis (about 19% of arthritis diagnoses) and psoriatic arthritis (1.7%). About 4% of people aged 18 to 34 have arthritis compared to nearly 54% of people aged 75 and older. Other risk factors include people who are overweight and people who have less muscle mass compared to their body weight. Unfortunately, as we all get older, on average, we get heavier, and our muscles get weaker. This will lead to increased wear and tear of cartilage and eventually bone-on-bone rubbing. This does eventually catch up to most people who develop enough risk factors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"arthritis-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis prevention\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may not be possible to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/questions\/how-to-prevent-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entirely, but there are some things you can do to reduce your chances of developing it. Other ways to help prevent arthritis include stretching regularly and getting routine check-ups to make sure your joints are staying healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-arthritis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating arthritis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s currently no cure for arthritis, but it can be managed through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/arthritis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication and various therapies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two most commonly used supplements for joint pain and arthritis are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25589511\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucosamine-chondroitin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38576215\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turmeric<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (curcumin).
