Some of these side effects, such as severe allergic reactions or withdrawal, may take days to weeks to resolve even with medical treatment. Every person taking Xanax should be aware of potential pitfalls such as physical dependence, tolerance, substance abuse, withdrawal, and the possibility the drug will worsen existing medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking Xanax continuously can lead to physical dependence and tolerance. Taking prescription Xanax as directed also carries a risk of evolving into substance abuse. Benzodiazepines are commonly misused prescription drugs. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482238\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1%\u20132%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people in the U.S. will at some point in their lives misuse benzodiazepines. Serious and even life-threatening overdoses and drug interactions are a common hazard when people abuse benzodiazepines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrupt discontinuation of Xanax can provoke withdrawal that can range from unpleasant to potentially life-threatening. Some people may experience protracted withdrawal (anxiety, impairment, insomnia, depression, creepy-crawly or prickling skin sensations, and weakness) that can last for up to 12 months. Long-term Xanax abuse or addiction may require specialized detox treatments to manage acute and protracted withdrawal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax must be discontinued in a gradually decreasing dose supervised by a healthcare provider to avoid withdrawal. Even with a tapered dose, some withdrawal symptoms may be experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the dose, too much Xanax will cause drowsiness, dizziness, impairment, loss of coordination, diminished reflexes, coma, and possibly death. Serious adverse effects or death are more likely when large doses of Xanax are combined with alcohol or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this reason, Xanax is used cautiously in those with a history of drug or alcohol abuse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><b>depression <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be monitored for any worsening of the depression. Some people with depression may experience mania when taking Xanax.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><b>liver problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will receive a lower dose of alprazolam because their bodies metabolize the drug slowly, raising the risk of side effects. In addition, those with <\/span><b>kidney dysfunction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or who are overweight will need to be checked regularly to avoid too much drug accumulating in the body and causing side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Xanax slows down breathing, caution will be used in any person with <\/span><b>lung disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>sleep apnea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax can worsen certain medical conditions including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/myasthenia-gravis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myasthenia gravis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and porphyria.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a history of <\/span><b>seizures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a higher risk of seizures\u2014including severe and life-threatening seizures (status epilepticus)\u2014when Xanax is discontinued too quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and nursing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women should avoid taking Xanax. Alprazolam crosses the placenta and can affect unborn babies. In the first trimester, alprazolam may cause birth defects and other fetal development problems. When taken in the last trimester, alprazolam can cause sedation, breathing problems, and withdrawal symptoms in a newborn baby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who are breastfeeding should also avoid Xanax. Alprazolam is present in breast milk. A nursing infant can be affected by the drug and become sedated, sleepy, and have problems feeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of Xanax or generic alprazolam in children younger than 18 years. Although some doctors may prescribe a very short course of Xanax to treat anxiety in children, parents should be aware that children are more sensitive to the effects of Xanax than adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older adults metabolize alprazolam <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Alprazolam#section=Metabolism-Metabolites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more slowly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than younger adults. For this reason, doctors will start with a lower dose to prevent side effects. In general, healthcare providers are advised to avoid giving drugs like Xanax to the elderly because of the risk of mental impairment, falls, injuries, and driving accidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\">Xanax interactions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax can cause problems with a number of over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Many of these drug interactions are minor, but some can be very serious and even life-threatening.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>CYP3A4 inhibitors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delay the elimination of Xanax<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these are commonly prescribed drugs such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clarithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an antibiotic), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ketoconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketoconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an antifungal), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/itraconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itraconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (another antifungal), common HIV drugs, DHEA supplements, and grapefruit.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Opioids. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax and other benzodiazepines come with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black-box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to avoid combining opioid pain relievers with Xanax. The combination could cause sedation, slowed breathing, respiratory depression, and death.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Central nervous system depressants.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Because of the risk of sedation and respiratory depression, other drugs to avoid include other <\/span><b>benzodiazepines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/barbiturates\">barbiturat<b>es<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>sedatives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Xanax should be avoided or used with caution with other depressants such as <\/span><b>antihistamines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antipsychotics\">antipsychotics<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-for-anxiety-and-depression\/\">anxiety drugs<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tricyclic-antidepressants\/\">tricyclic antidepressants<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\">monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\">anticonvulsants<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some common over-the-counter supplements are also CNS depressants and should be avoided when taking benzodiazepines. These include licorice, melatonin, and kava.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\">How to avoid Xanax side effects<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people taking Xanax will experience side effects. A few tips can help either avoid or manage side effects caused by Xanax.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Take Xanax as directed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the dose exactly as prescribed, usually 0.25\u20133 mg taken three times a day. A doctor or other healthcare provider may provide a dosing schedule. Don\u2019t take extra medicine or skip a dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.
