Let\u2019s explore some of these differences here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"active-ingredients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active ingredients<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reclast and Prolia belong to different drug classes. Reclast contains zoledronic acid, which is a bisphosphonate. It works by binding to an enzyme on osteoclasts, bone cells that break down bone tissue in a process called bone resorption. Other bone cells called osteoblasts then build new bone tissue to maintain the strength and health of the bone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prolia contains denosumab. However, Reclast is administered as an infusion through the vein (intravenously or IV) by a healthcare provider. It\u2019s important to consult a healthcare provider if you experience any of the following problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hypocalcemia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypocalcemia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reclast and Prolia can sometimes cause low calcium levels in the blood. A healthcare provider will typically recommend taking calcium and vitamin D supplements to counteract this problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"osteonecrosis-of-the-jaw-onj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, Reclast and Prolia may contribute to ONJ, which is a painful condition where the jawbone starts to weaken.
