Chances are pretty good that you\u2019ve got some old medicines in there somewhere. Holding on to unused drugs might seem like no big deal, but they may be putting people in danger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe biggest concern is that leftover painkillers get used by someone other than for whom they were prescribed. It\u2019s a significant driver of the opioid crisis,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/craigsvensson.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craig K. Svensson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., PhD, dean emeritus and professor of medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacy.purdue.edu\/future-students\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purdue University College of Pharmacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But leftover painkillers aren\u2019t the only medicines to watch out for\u2014even surplus antibiotics and other drugs can pose a threat. \u201cI worked at a poison control center for years, and I can\u2019t tell you how often children were poisoned after getting into prescription medicines,\u201d said Svensson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t just toss those pills in the trash, though. It\u2019s important to learn how to dispose of medication safely. Here\u2019s what to do with your unwanted old prescriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Check for a local drug disposal program<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to get rid of your unused or expired medicines is through a local disposal program, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/resourcesforyou\/consumers\/buyingusingmedicinesafely\/ensuringsafeuseofmedicine\/safedisposalofmedicines\/ucm186187.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA number of pharmacies have medicine take-back programs. It\u2019s usually a drop box inside the pharmacy where you put your prescription bottles and the pharmacy will dispose of them safely,\u201d said Svensson. Select <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvs.com\/content\/safer-communities-locate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CVS pharmacies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accept unneeded prescription medications. Walgreens pharmacies offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.walgreens.com\/topic\/pharmacy\/safe-medication-disposal.jsp?o=acs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DisposeRx boxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at select locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some hospitals, clinics, and police stations also accept unwanted medications for safe drug disposal. You can find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/pubdispsearch\/spring\/main?execution=e1s1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance disposal locations in your area <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prescription-drug-abuse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How pharmacists can help prevent prescription drug abuse<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>2. Flush dangerous medicines<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can\u2019t find a medicine take-back program in your area? Don\u2019t worry\u2014you\u2019ve got a disposal option right in your own bathroom: the toilet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should flush any drugs that someone could potentially abuse, such as opioids or Xanax,\u201d advised Svensson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every type of drug should be flushed. Before you empty your bottles in the toilet, look for disposal instructions that may have come with your prescriptions. Or, use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/109643\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA\u2019s recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The drugs you should flush include (see link for examples of brand names where these ingredients can be found):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzhydrocodone\/acetaminophen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buprenorphine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fentanyl<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrocodone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydromorphone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meperidine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methadone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methylphenidate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morphine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxycodone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxymorphone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tapentadol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sodium oxybate<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s some concern that flushing medicine down the toilet may harm the environment, the potential threat that these dangerous pills pose to people is a much bigger worry, said Svensson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe risk of people diverting and abusing drugs is really high and partly driving the opioid crisis, so flushing those particular drugs is the best way to avoid that,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Throw unwanted drugs in the trash<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0While bringing drugs that shouldn\u2019t be flushed to a take-back program is preferred, you can toss them in your household trash if necessary. The key is to make them as unappealing as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou need to put the medicine in the trash in a way that animals and people won\u2019t consume them,\u201d said Svensson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA recommends mixing the medicine with something unsavory, such as kitty litter, coffee grounds, or dirt. Then, empty the mixture into its own container, like a resealable plastic bag (to prevent leakage), and place that in your trash can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-recycle-pill-bottles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pill bottle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should also be thrown out or recycled. Use a permanent marker to black out any personal information, like your name, address, prescription number, and the name of the medicine, in order to protect your privacy. Better yet, peel off the entire label if possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might seem like a cluttered cabinet is a problem caused by unwanted medicine. But when certain pills end up in the wrong hands, the consequences can be deadly.
