The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine-what-to-expect\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause a variety of side effects\u2014more often occurring after the second dose than the first dose. And headache is one of the most common.\u00a0 Researchers agree that a headache after the COVID vaccine is usually mild and short lived, but knowing what to expect can help ease your mind and give you a game plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it normal to get a headache after getting the COVID vaccine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), headache is a common, but mild, side effect of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compare-covid-vaccines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all three COVID-19 vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently available in this country. That includes the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vacc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer-BioNtech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccines (both mRNA vaccines) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/janssen-covid-19-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson &amp; Johnson viral vector vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The AstraZeneca vaccine, used in Europe and other parts of the world, is not available in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRoughly 30% of people experience headache as a side effect [of COVID vaccination],\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hartfordhealthcare.org\/find-a-doctor\/physician-detail?id=003j000000aslhJAAQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Grosberg, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of the Hartford HealthCare Headache Center. \u201cPeople may experience side effects like headaches from the vaccine because of the body\u2019s initial immune response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/questions-about-the-covid-19-vaccines-for-people-living-with-migraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Migraine Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is most likely to produce a headache. Sixty percent of those receiving the vaccine experienced that side effect versus 40% of those getting the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine and 38% of those given the Pfizer one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How intense will the headache be? Every person is different. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/04\/210427195144.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that people younger than 55 and women tend to have more vaccine side effects. But when a headache does occur, it\u2019s usually not severe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany people will have no headache at all after receiving the COVID vaccine, some may have a mild headache, while others feel their headache is severe enough that it limits their activities for the day,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.tamu.edu\/experts\/jason-mcknight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jason McKnight, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&amp;M College of Medicine. \u201cTypically, though, all of the symptoms resolve within 1 to 3 days after vaccination.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine after COVID vaccines<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who live with migraine may be particularly leery of any possible trigger, including the COVID vaccine. But experts report the concern is not scientifically valid. The benefits of being vaccinated against COVID\u2014for both the individual and the community\u2014outweigh the risk of headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no good data to substantiate that people impacted by migraine are at a higher likelihood to experience a headache from the vaccine,\u201d says Dr. Grosberg. \u201cThat being said, most people with migraine know that they are biologically more sensitive to certain triggers than can elicit a headache, one of which may be a vaccine. People with migraine should still receive the vaccine.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat headaches after COVID vaccines<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be tempting to try and ward off any potential headache by treating yourself with painkillers like ibuprofen before you head out to get vaccinated, but healthcare providers advise against it. \u201cThese medications may blunt the immune response to the vaccination,\u201d notes Dr. McKnight. And, you may be part of the 60% of patients who do not get a headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter pain relievers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If after the vaccination you have a headache, it\u2019s okay to take pain medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen can also help with common side effects like a sore arm at the injection site and generalized muscle soreness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you do get a migraine after the COVID-19 vaccine, the American Migraine Foundation reports there\u2019s no evidence that migraine medications (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/triptans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ditans, and gepants) reduce the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere may be a wide degree of variability in terms of the intensity and duration of a COVID\u00a0 vaccine headache,\u201d comments Dr. Grosberg. \u201cBut many people who experience a headache or migraine as a side effect of the vaccine can successfully manage it with their normal medications, including but not limited to OTC remedies or migraine-specific medications like triptans or CGRP antagonists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/migraine-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Migraine treatment and medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s nothing you can do to prevent a post-vaccination headache, taking care of yourself before your shot can help you feel better. Get a good night\u2019s rest before your vaccination and drink plenty of fluids to make sure you\u2019re hydrated. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/headaches.org\/2016\/07\/07\/headaches-and-dehydration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration can trigger headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially migraines. And if you know certain things\u2014such as particular foods or bright sunlight or cigarette smoke\u2014set off your headaches, avoid them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other things that help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/tame-your-tension-headaches-naturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat\/prevent a headache<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindfulness (a stress-reduction technique that uses deep breathing and guided imagery to help you relax)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/migraine-and-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mineral supplementation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly if you live with migraines. Both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> citrate (400-600 mg) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/riboflavin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">riboflavin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a B vitamin (400 mg daily), seem to be beneficial.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor: Severe or lingering headache after COVID vaccine<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most side effects related to the COVID-19 vaccine are mild and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/publichealth.lacounty.gov\/acd\/ncorona2019\/vaccine\/aftervaccination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">occur and resolve rapidly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, usually appearing within 48 hours post-vaccine and resolving in a day or two. You should get medical advice or attention if you have a headache that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lasts longer than two days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is severe, persistent, and\/or accompanied with blurred vision. This could signal a very rare <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/146305\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clot in the brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a reaction some have reported with the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is what you might refer to as the worst headache of your life. This could signal a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/brain-aneurysm\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20361483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain aneurysm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a ballooning of a blood vessel in the brain) or even a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/signs-of-a-stroke\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is accompanied with one-sided weakness or numbness (another stroke signal)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is causing you concern of any kind<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is a headache a symptom of COVID-19?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the currently available COVID-19 vaccines in this country are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/covid-19-vaccine-comparison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly effective in protecting against the virus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the very contagious and dangerous Delta variant. Overall, the efficacy rate of the available vaccines are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pfizer-BioNtech COVID-19 vaccine has a 95% efficacy rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Moderna vaccine has a 94.1% efficacy rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine has a 72% efficacy rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the vaccine doesn\u2019t provide 100% protection, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-breakthrough\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breakthrough infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COVID infections that occur after being vaccinated) do occur. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7021e3.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just over 10,000 people in the U.S. had experienced breakthrough COVID infections by the end of April 2021 out of more than 100 million vaccinated people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So since headache is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-and-incubation-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom of COVID-19 infection<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a side effect from the vaccine, how will you know if the headache you\u2019re experiencing post vaccination is a byproduct of the vaccine or an active COVID infection?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, it\u2019s important to understand that none of the COVID vaccines contain the live virus. There is no way to get COVID from the COVID vaccine. And, notes Dr. Grosberg, in the unlikely event your post-vaccination headache is related to a COVID infection because you caught the virus before you were fully vaccinated, you\u2019re apt to experience other symptoms as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a headache develops that may be related to the actual virus,\u201d he says, \u201cother symptoms may present, such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, abdominal discomfort, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.\u201d When in doubt, get a COVID-19 test to confirm whether you have the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
