But for 56% of people, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost of therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the biggest obstacle to mental health treatment, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/press\/mental-health-survey-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare survey with Mental Health America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cost should not be a barrier to getting help. In this article, we outline <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">counseling costs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and strategies to help you find <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-cost<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/mental-health-statistics\/\"><b>Mental health statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-is-therapy-without-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much is therapy without insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTypically, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average cost of therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [without insurance] is somewhere between $100 and $250 [per session],\u201d according to Ashley McGirt, MSW, therapist, author, and the founder of WA Therapy Fund Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online therapy programs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are generally less expensive than in-person therapy, depending on what you need and want. And the cost can vary by region. For example, therapy in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would generally be more expensive than in Idaho. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s education, training, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specialization<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could also influence <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapist costs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and so does the length of the session.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most sessions are 45-50 minutes; some can be 30 minutes long while others are 90 minutes or longer, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drroseann.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Roseann Campanna-Hodge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ed.D., psychologist and founder of The Global Institute of Children\u2019s Mental Health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-insurance-cover-therapy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does insurance cover therapy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health insurance plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might help pay for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapy sessions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most plans offered through <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health insurance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exchanges through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affordable Care Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are required to provide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Private <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not under the umbrella of the ACA may offer\u2014but aren\u2019t necessarily required to\u2014mental health benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your plan does cover mental health benefits, the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Health Parity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Addiction Equity Act (also known as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health parity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> law) requires that mental health and addiction coverage is comparable to their physical health coverage, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/managed-care-insurance\/parity-guide\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, if you pay a $20 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copay<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for most physical health visits, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copay<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can\u2019t be higher for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health services<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The law also prevents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from placing a firm limit on the number of visits per year. However, they can request a review after a certain number of visits to determine if the care is still needed, or they may require <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prior-authorization\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prior authorization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reimbursement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rates <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pay therapists is quite low, which is held over from the time before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health parity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> laws. Unlike so many other branches of medicine, a disproportionate number of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> simply do not accept insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-much-does-therapy-cost-with-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does therapy cost with insurance?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much you will pay for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depends on your plan and your mental health provider. Some factors that can affect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health insurance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> payments, according to the American Psychological Association, include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Whether your therapist is an in-<\/b><b>network provider<\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pay a certain amount for providers in their network. For providers outside the network, the amount they pay the provider is less.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You have a <\/b><b>deductible<\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deductible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on your plan, you might need to meet it before receiving benefits. Contact your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine how much your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deductible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is, and what medical services go toward it. Once you meet the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deductible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pays according to your plan benefits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your therapist does not work with your <\/b><b>insurance company<\/b><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Not all providers accept all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance plans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As explained above, many do not.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find a therapist in network, you can request a list of in-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">network providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can often find whether a provider takes insurance and what plans they accept on psychologytoday.com.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve found a therapist you\u2019d like to try, make sure to call and ask about their policies regarding insurance. You will want to find out:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Does the provider accept your insurance? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If so, will they bill the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly with you paying the copayment, or do you need to submit their bill for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reimbursement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>If they do not accept insurance, what are their payment policies?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Is payment expected at the time of service, or are you billed for the visits? You could also inquire about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sliding scale<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rates based on your income.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some therapists accept only cash or credit card payments and prefer not to accept insurance at all. One reason is the low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reimbursement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rates. When a therapist decides to take insurance, they must accept the rates set by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAnother reason is the restrictions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> place on care,\u201d<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashleymcgirt.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> McGirt <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health insurance companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> require therapists to have a legitimate diagnosis to provide you with reimbursable treatment.\u201d That can be a problem because not every reason for seeing a therapist is considered a mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-find-affordable-therapy-without-insurance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to find <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affordable therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without insurance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have insurance for mental health treatment, consider an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-teletherapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online therapist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has changed because of COVID-19,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brittanyajohnson.com\/about-me\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brittany A. Now, people can access therapy during their lunch hour. Numerous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online therapy programs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be affordable, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talkspace<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BetterHelp<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Therapists who have traditionally offered only in-person therapy are now offering online sessions at a lower cost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affordable options<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"employee-assistance-programs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee assistance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some employers offer counseling and assistance for problems that interfere with their employee\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-being<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individual therapy sessions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for emotional issues, relationships, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substance abuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues. These are often provided at no cost to the employee and can be in-person, online, or by phone. There is usually a set <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number of sessions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Therapy practices, rather than individuals, are more likely to have interns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"clinical-trials\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical trials<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you participate in a clinical trial, your care is usually free. The National Institute of Mental Health completes research studies on a variety of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Check on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/search\/open\/term=%22mental+health%22\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinicaltrials.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for mental health-related trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"locate-a-federally-qualified-health-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Locate a federally qualified health center<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These health centers usually offer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and work on a sliding payment scale. You can search the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HRSA Data Warehouse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find a health center in your area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"research-health-insurance-options\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health insurance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> options<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several options for people and those without <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance coverage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When looking for a plan, make sure they include mental health treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medicaid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is health care coverage offered by the federal government and your state government.
