It\u2019s important to prepare properly for your trip in order to make sure your first stop off the flight isn\u2019t at the pharmacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing the rules of flying with medication, how you should store it, and the potential side effects of travel is just as important as knowing when your plane takes off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-i-know-about-traveling-with-prescriptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should I know about traveling with prescriptions?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling with prescription drugs isn\u2019t hard\u2014but it does take proper planning and research. Here are five tips for flying with medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-take-stock-of-your-medications-before-you-travel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Take stock of your medications before you travel<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before your departure date, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider. Prepare a list of questions about your medication, such as how travel may affect your medication. If you\u2019re traveling internationally, be sure to research beforehand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/page\/travel-abroad-with-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if your medication is permitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at your destination. If it\u2019s not, your healthcare provider may need to prescribe an alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States Department of State <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/international-travel\/before-you-go\/your-health-abroad.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obtaining a doctor\u2019s note from your healthcare provider that details your medical conditions and any related prescriptions, so be sure to ask for this as well. Your provider should include both brand and generic names of your meds, and you should carry this letter with you while traveling abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, make sure you have enough medication for your trip\u2019s duration and any unexpected travel delays. Pack your medications in your carry-on<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You never know when your flight might be delayed or your checked baggage could be lost. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to keep your medications in your carry-on bag. Plus, many medications need to be kept temperature stable and the cargo hold is not temperature controlled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re worried about getting stopped at an airport security checkpoint when putting meds in your carry-on luggage, don\u2019t be\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-review-tsa-guidelines-for-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Review TSA guidelines for medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/travel-tips\/can-you-pack-your-meds-pill-case-and-more-questions-answered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around liquid restrictions\u2014but the standard 3.4-ounce limit does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> apply to liquid medications. When you go through the screening process, tell the officer that you have medically necessary liquids (this includes prescription gels and creams) so they can perform additional screenings. You may be asked to open the container for liquids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/special-procedures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> apply for injectable medications, but syringes must be unused\u2014and accompanied by injectable medication. If you need to keep your medication cold, the TSA allows travelers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/whatcanibring\/items\/freezer-packs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to bring freezer packs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on flights as long as they\u2019re frozen solid at the time of screening.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-keep-prescription-and-otc-medications-in-their-original-packaging\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Keep prescription and OTC medications in their original packaging<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pill organizers may be great for organizing your life at home, but you should skip them when you\u2019re traveling and keep your prescription and over-the-counter medications in the labeled containers for a couple of reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, you can minimize any issues when flying into a foreign country or returning through U.S. customs if all your medications are in their original containers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that medication labels show your full name, your healthcare provider\u2019s name, and the generic and brand name and exact dosage of your prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, many prescription bottles provide ultraviolet light protection, which organizers or other storage methods may not provide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome medications may be sensitive to light, moisture, or temperature changes,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthreporter.com\/author\/rosmy-barrios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosmy Barrios<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a medical adviser for Health Reporter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-have-a-plan-for-temperature-control-while-traveling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Have a plan for temperature control while traveling<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your medication needs to be stored at a specific temperature, talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist about how they recommend you travel with it. Ice packs may be a good option to consider. Both air travel and your destination may expose your medications to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baystatehealth.org\/news\/2014\/07\/heat-impact-on-meds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extreme temperatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInsulin, for instance, can lose its effectiveness if not stored properly,\u201d says Kelvin Fernandez, MD, a healthcare educator at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acemedboards.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ace Med Boards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt\u2019s crucial to plan ahead and ensure you have access to the right facilities to store such medications while you\u2019re on the move.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-stay-healthy-when-traveling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to stay healthy when traveling<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to making sure you get to your destination with your medication\u2014it\u2019s important to keep in mind how to stay healthy during your vacation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTravelers who take medications on a regular schedule should be aware of the potential impact on their regimen,\u201d Dr. Barrios says. \u201cConsulting with a healthcare provider prior to travel can provide valuable guidance on managing medication schedules during time zone changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re going a long distance (say, from Omaha to Oslo) speak with your healthcare provider about the best way to adjust your medication schedule to match the new time zone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you\u2019re speaking with your provider, ask about what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/travel-vaccines-overseas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other preventive measures they might recommend for your area. Depending on your destination, you could be at risk for diseases like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/malaria-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malaria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/tuberculosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tuberculosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, typhoid, and yellow fever\u2014or something as simple as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/travelers-diarrhea\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveler\u2019s diarrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For anything where there isn\u2019t a vaccine or prophylactic available, your doctor may be able to prescribe antibiotics or anti-nausea meds to have on hand, just in case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideal vacation will go off without a hitch: No hiccups through customs, no stomach bugs.
