What may look like reduced activity or lack of proper grooming can be signs of discomfort in your cat, especially in older cats. If your feline friend is suddenly avoiding jumping on the bed or chasing after toys, it could be a sign of arthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/arthritis-in-dogs\/\"><b>How to treat arthritis in dogs<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is arthritis in cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/osteoarthritis-vs-rheumatoid-arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis is a catch-all term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that refers to inflammation of the joints and is a largely underdiagnosed condition that can lead to severe pain and discomfort in affected cats,\u201d says Theresa W. Fossum, DVM, Ph.D., the founder of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drfossums.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Fossum\u2019s Pet Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s common, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icatcare.org\/advice\/arthritis-and-degenerative-joint-disease-in-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% to 90% of cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are affected by arthritis, particularly those older than 12 years. Much like the condition in humans, it can cause achy joints or sore bones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOsteoarthritis (OA) is a more specific term that your veterinarian may use to describe a degenerative condition of your cat\u2019s joints that leads to cartilage destruction and pain due to wear and tear,\u201d Dr. Fossum says. When referring to arthritis in cats, osteoarthritis is generally what is being referenced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know if your cat has arthritis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe signs of arthritis in cats can be subtle,\u201d says Jennifer Coates, DVM, who serves on the advisory board for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/petnewsdaily.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet News Daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPet parents might notice that their cats become less mobile and appear stiff, particularly after rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs that your cat may have arthritis\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elwoodvet.net\/arthritis-in-cats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hesitance to jump onto or off of high surfaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty climbing stairs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiffness especially after sleeping or resting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems using the litter box, including going outside the box<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble going through the cat door<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced activity or play level<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noticeable lack of grooming, such as scruffy coat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-grooming of painful joints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resistance to being handled or pet<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some cats may limp, but this is less common. Cats with arthritis\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary\/animal-health-literacy\/osteoarthritis-cats-more-common-you-think\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may also experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a loss of appetite, weight loss, or depression. \u201cOsteoarthritis may occur in any joint, but is most common in the limbs (hip, shoulder, elbow, and knee) and the spine,\u201d Dr. Fossum explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t sure, the International Society of Feline Medicine provides a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icatcare.org\/app\/uploads\/2019\/10\/mobility_check-list.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobility checklist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to give you an idea of if your cat is showing signs of arthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes arthritis in cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many causes and risk factors for arthritis in cats, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wear and tear on the joints:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The normal cartilage cushion in the joints breaks down, eventually causing the bones in the joint to rub against each other.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetics:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some breeds are prone to conditions that can lead to arthritis such as hip dysplasia (abnormal development of the hip joint), patella luxation (dislocation of the kneecap), or an abnormality of cartilage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Injury or trauma:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fractures, dislocations, and other joint injuries can cause abnormal joint conformation, possibly leading to secondary osteoarthritis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Obesity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Obesity has not been shown to cause arthritis, but it can make arthritis worse and harder to manage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acromegaly:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An uncommon condition in older cats where a tumor in the pituitary gland secretes too much growth hormone. This usually causes a cat to develop diabetes, but it can also lead to secondary arthritis in their joints.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Conditions or medications that affect collagen or cartilage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These can include conditions such as diabetes, or prolonged treatment with corticosteroids.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue of arthritis in cats is more quality of life than longevity. \u201cOsteoarthritis is typically not life threatening in household cats that do not have to hunt and catch their food,\u201d Dr. Fossum says. The most important thing is to treat your cat\u2019s symptoms well enough for your pet to resume normal activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best treatment for arthritis in cats?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no cure for arthritis, but there are ways to help make cats with arthritis more comfortable. \u201cMost cats with arthritis respond best to multimodal therapy\u2014several different types of treatment used in combination,\u201d Dr. Coates says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle and environmental changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your cat\u2019s environment as arthritis-friendly as possible with these changes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat is overweight, discuss a weight loss plan with your vet to help relieve some pressure on your cat\u2019s joints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide soft, easily accessible beds in low places<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give access to safe heat sources such as placing a bed in a sun spot<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place steps or a ramp in elevated areas that your cat likes to frequent, such as the couch<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use an uncovered litter box, with at least one low side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put food and water at floor level in raised bowls<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groom and clean your cat, including trimming nails<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to keep everything your cat needs on one level of your home so your cat doesn\u2019t have to climb stairs unnecessarily.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce your cat\u2019s osteoarthritis becomes more severe, they may require painkillers, steroids, or other anti-inflammatory drugs,\u201d says Dr. Fossum. Pain reduction is crucial for cats with arthritis, both for their comfort and to encourage exercise, which can lead to further reduction in symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly prescribed for arthritic cats, but they must be given under the guidance of a vet. \u201cCats are very sensitive to NSAIDS, and you should never give Tylenol, ibuprofen, or aspirin to them,\u201d says Dr. Fossum. \u201cThese drugs can be toxic to cats because their livers don\u2019t metabolize them in the same way that humans do. If your cat is in severe enough pain to require\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/top-discount-pet-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consult your veterinarian. They will know what drugs are safe to give and they will recommend a dose appropriate for your cat\u2019s weight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to, or in place of NSAIDs, other pain-relieving medications may be prescribed by your cat\u2019s vet. Additionally, the industry is not regulated. The quality, including the amount of active ingredient, can vary widely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, vets often say it doesn\u2019t hurt to try supplements aimed at joint support for your cat. Feline joint support supplements typically contain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omega-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chondroitin-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chondroitin sulfate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glucosamine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucosamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As with medications, never give your cat a supplement without first checking with their veterinarian.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other treatments<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other treatments that may be used for cats with arthritis include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapeutic lasers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acupuncture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycans (PSGAGs)\u2014joint protectant injections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgery (rarely)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing that arthritis is common, but often not obvious, in cats, it\u2019s a good idea to watch for signs that your cat might be struggling with their mobility. This is especially important for senior cats, but arthritis can happen in younger cats, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do suspect that your cat has arthritis, take them to the vet for an examination, don\u2019t try to treat your cat on your own. If your cat is receiving treatment, watch for any signs of side effects or a reaction, and also take note of what seems to be helping and what isn\u2019t.
