{"id":4001,"date":"2019-04-25T15:35:48","date_gmt":"2019-04-25T19:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=4001"},"modified":"2020-07-15T19:57:15","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T23:57:15","slug":"medication-help-alcohol-use-disorder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-help-alcohol-use-disorder\/","title":{"rendered":"The most effective drugs to help you stop drinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a growing health issue in the United States; it\u2019s estimated that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 6% of adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are affected. While recovery isn\u2019t easy, there are a wide array of treatment options that can help\u2014and they go beyond 12-step programs and in-patient rehab. There are currently three prescription medications for alcohol use disorders approved by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2016\/0315\/p457.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FDA), along with other drugs that some doctors use off-label for drinking problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what you need to know about the drugs that can help you stop drinking and where you can go for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3 FDA-approved medications for alcohol use disorder<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has approved the following medications to help with alcohol use disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Campral (acamprosate)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acamprosate-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acamprosate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help some people with AUD stop drinking by reducing cravings and decreasing the psychological reward from alcohol. It is typically taken in tablet form three times per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Vivitrol (naltrexone)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to acamprosate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naltrexone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naltrexone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eliminates the pleasure people with AUD experience from alcohol, thus reducing the urge to drink. It\u2019s available as a daily pill, a monthly injection, and through a medication implant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Antabuse (disulfiram)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/disulfiram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disulfiram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a tablet you take once per day after you\u2019ve stopped drinking for at least 12 hours. It blocks the metabolism of alcohol and ultimately makes you very sick if you drink while on the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Which medication can help you stop drinking?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the FDA-approved medications listed above, the drug that will work best for you will depend on a variety of factors, including whether or not you\u2019ve stopped drinking already, your health history, and your budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disulfiram is the oldest approved medication for AUD in the United States. However, it has fallen out of favor with some doctors because of how severely it punishes someone if they slip-up and have a drink, which is very common during recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s kind of like reaching into the cookie jar, and the cookie jar breaks your arm\u2014you\u2019re unlikely to reach in again,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/psychiatry\/dr-harshal-d-kirane-md-11366711\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harshal Kirane, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of addiction services at Staten Island University Hospital. \u201c[However], disulfiram is not always the best option for patients because any alcohol that gets absorbed and enters the bloodstream, whether through drinking, using alcohol in cooking or even hand sanitizer, can produce an adverse reaction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acamprosate and naltrexone have been shown to have similar efficacy, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weillcornell.org\/rsbrown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Brown, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hepatologist and director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian\/Weill Cornell Medical Center, but there are some differences to be aware of: \u201cThe advantage of naltrexone is that it\u2019s [taken] once daily, which helps improve patient compliance, and there\u2019s data [to show] that it works even if a person is still drinking when they start the medication,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I tend to prescribe more acamprosate than naltrexone because if a patient also has a problem with opioids, they can\u2019t take naltrexone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost may also be a factor in your decision. American Family Physician found that a one month\u2019s supply of generic acamprosate costs $55, slightly higher than generic naltrexone, which costs $45 for a month\u2019s worth of pills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Off-label drugs to reduce drinking<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors may also prescribe other medications for \u201coff-label\u201d use to help patients stop drinking. This means that the FDA has not deemed the drug to be safe or effective for alcohol use disorder, but the healthcare provider has decided it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/forpatients\/other\/offlabel\/default.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmedically appropriate\u201d for their patient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><b>What you need to know about off-label drugs<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese medications fall broadly into the class of drugs known as mood stabilizers, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/topiramate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topiramate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lamictal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lamictal<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trileptal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trileptal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d explains Dr. Kirane. \u201cThe evidence that these medicines can be helpful is limited and tends to come from small, unblinded studies. They should definitely be considered if someone\u2019s not finding the other medications to be particularly effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/baclofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baclofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drug used to treat muscle spasms, may also be a viable treatment for alcohol use disorder. This is especially useful for patients who have advanced liver disease, as baclofen is primarily metabolized in the kidneys, says Brown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other alcohol use disorder treatment options\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no one-size-fits-all treatment for people who wish to cut back on drinking. Medication, while potentially helpful, might not be a magic bullet for alcohol abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCounseling, behavioral supports, and medication should all be on the table to find a dynamic form of treatment that not only meets patients\u2019 needs when they enter treatment, but can evolve as they continue to improve and grow,\u201d Dr. Kirane says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re struggling with a drinking problem, work with your doctor to develop a plan to quit. You can also seek support from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcoholics Anonymous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-help\/national-helpline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Helpline for SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a growing health issue in the United States; it\u2019s estimated that more than 6% of adults are affected.
