But in a rush to help them feel better, nearly 40% of parents accidentally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/134\/2\/e354.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">give their children the wrong amount of medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can put their health in jeopardy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThough not all such errors result in harm, there are definitely risks of both under-treatment and overdose, depending on the medication and the condition being treated,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/about\/leadership\/michael-grosso-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael\u00a0Grosso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, chair of pediatrics and chief\u00a0medical\u00a0officer at Northwell Health\u2019s Huntington Hospital in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your child too little medicine and symptoms may worsen. But he or she could get even sicker if you give too much of even the safest medications. Take Benadryl, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBenadryl is very common to be given to kids for allergic reactions, itchy skin rashes, and bug bites,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weillcornell.org\/slp9001\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shari\u00a0Platt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD,\u00a0chief of pediatric emergency medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian\/Weill Cornell Medical Center and assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. \u201cBut too much Benadryl can cause serious side effects, like sedation, respiratory depression, and even seizures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to measure children\u2019s medication correctly<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosing children\u2019s medicine correctly isn\u2019t hard, but there are a few things parents should keep in mind. Here are tips on making sure your child gets the right amount of medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Use a proper medicine measuring cup\u2014not a kitchen spoon<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in five parents say it\u2019s okay to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chpa.org\/ParentsSafeLiquidOTCMedicine.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measure over-the-counter medicines with a household spoon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But cutlery comes in all shapes and sizes, making it difficult to measure the correct dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cParents should never use a kitchen teaspoon or tablespoon in dosing liquid medicine,\u201d Dr. Grosso says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those little plastic measuring cups that come with liquid medicine aren\u2019t your best bet, either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cParents in one study selected the wrong dose almost 50% of the time with these cups,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, pick up a syringe or dropper with clearly labeled measurements from your pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Double-check dosage units<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s all too easy to mix up teaspoons and tablespoons. Double-check the measurement, especially if you think you saw \u201ctablespoon\u201d on the dosing instructions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe very rarely give a dose in tablespoons,\u201d Dr. Platt says. \u201cThe standard dose is 1 teaspoon, which is 5 milliliters, but always go by what\u2019s on the bottle.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents should also make sure not to measure teaspoons if the dose is given in milliliters. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf the measurement is supposed to be 5 milliliters, but you give 5 teaspoons instead, you\u2019ll have a 25 ml dose and that&#8217;s way too much,\u201d she explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Measure liquid medication by weight, not age<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instructions on children\u2019s medicine may tell you how much they should take based on their age. However, doctors say you should actually use your child\u2019s weight to determine the right dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe calculate all medicine for children based on their weight,\u201d Dr. Platt says. \u201cSo if you have a very small 8-year-old child, you might want to give them a dose for a 4-year-old.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/medication-safety\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthychildren.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a website from the American Academy of Pediatrics, offers dosing advice for some of the most common children\u2019s medicines that can help you determine the right amount. With that said, nothing beats the advice of a doctor: Ask your pediatrician about the right medicine and dose for your child.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When your kids are sick, you want to help them find relief\u2014fast.
