While some types of headaches can be treated successfully with over-the-counter (OTC) medications, some headaches require a consultation with your healthcare provider. Learn more about the different kinds of headaches\u2014and how to tell which is which.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the different types of headaches?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to assume that your head pain is caused by seasonal allergies, but\u2014because the symptoms are similar\u2014it could easily be a tension headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two categories of headache disorders:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Primary headaches: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The headache is the condition itself\u2014your pain isn\u2019t triggered by something else, like allergies or dehydration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Secondary headaches:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The headache is a symptom of something else that\u2019s happening in your body. Treating the root cause generally brings pain relief. For example, high blood pressure, hormone changes, or withdrawal from caffeine can all trigger secondary headaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to correctly identify your specific category and type of headache can result in better treatments and quicker relief from that head pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The common types of headaches include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#tension\">Tension headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#sinus\">Sinus headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#cluster\">Cluster headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#migraine\">Migraine<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#overuse\">Medication overuse headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#caffeine\">Caffeine headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#exertion\">Exertion headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#hormone\">Hormone headaches<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people have experienced a headache &#8211; the cause, duration, intensity, and location are dependent on the type of headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tension\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Tension headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tension-type headaches are the most common type of headache. \u201cTypically, tension headaches start at the back of the head and are sometimes accompanied by stiffness in the shoulders and neck,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/centers-of-excellence\/additional-centers\/primary-care-physicians\/find-a-primary-care-doctor\/primary-care-doctors\/kathryn-boling-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathryn Boling, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family medicine physician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. \u201cSome people describe tension headaches as feeling as if they have a rubber band around their head.\u201d You may experience dull, squeezing pain on both sides of the head, almost like your head is in a vise. The pain may last for 30 minutes to seven days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC pain relievers such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (acetaminophen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil or Motrin (ibuprofen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve (naproxen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually work well on tension headaches and the accompanying stiff neck. In the event tension headaches persist, your healthcare provider may recommend a prescription pain medication such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naprosyn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naprosyn (naproxen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is stronger than Aleve. Sometimes, for chronic tension headaches, doctors will recommend an antidepressant\u2014usually a tricyclic antidepressant such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amitriptyline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elavil (amitriptyline)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014to prevent tension headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many lifestyle changes to reduce stress also work well in warding off tension headaches, like physical activity or extra rest. \u201cExercising, such as taking a walk outdoors, in nature, or taking time to de-stress through mindfulness or meditation can also provide relief from tension headaches,\u201d Dr. Boling says. \u201cIn addition, staying well hydrated, getting a good night\u2019s sleep, and eating a healthy diet can all help to prevent tension headaches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sinus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Sinus headaches<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These painful headaches can feel like the bane of your existence. Located in the front of the head, often caused by inflamed sinuses or allergies, sinus headaches can feel like boring pressure behind the eyes. They can also accompany a sinus infection, also known as sinusitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be surprised to learn that a migraine can be mistaken for a sinus headache. \u201cBoth a sinus headache and a migraine can cause facial pain,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/profile\/jai-cho\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jai Cho, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a San Francisco neurologist with The MAVEN Project, a telehealth non-profit. \u201cBut if a patient has a headache without congestion, a fever, or nasal mucus, it\u2019s probably a migraine rather than a sinus headache.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinus headaches may be treated with decongestants to reduce nasal congestion, but be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist first as it could interact with other meds you\u2019re taking. You can also apply a warm compress to painful areas of the face or use a saline nasal spray for sinus headaches.To help decrease sinus congestion, a nasal saline rinse performed daily can help irrigate the sinuses to decrease the dust, mold, pollen and allergens that can irritate the sinuses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cluster\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Cluster headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These episodic, excruciating headaches usually occur on one side of the head (often behind the eye or at the temple) and can occur in cycles throughout the day. Cluster headaches tend to occur in a series around the same time of day, for several weeks or months. They can occur several times a day and can last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. \u201cCluster headaches aren\u2019t as common as migraines and tension headaches, but they can be very painful,\u201d Dr. Boling says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While experts aren\u2019t sure what causes cluster headaches, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-and-conditions\/c\/cluster-headaches.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be triggered by<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> certain factors such as alcohol use or smoking, bright light, or exercise. OTC medicines usually aren\u2019t effective in treating cluster headaches, but your provider may suggest oxygen treatments and sumatriptan nasal spray. To prevent cluster headaches, your provider may prescribe medications such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/verapamil-hcl-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verelan (verapamil)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium-carbonate-er\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithobid (lithium)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/emgality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emgality (galcanezumab)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was approved in 2019 as an injection to relieve the symptoms and frequency of cluster headaches and migraines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"migraine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Migraine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacist-knows-best-migraine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Migraine headaches aren\u2019t the same in everyone, and symptoms can vary from one person to the next.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characterized by a pulsing or throbbing pain on one side of the head, migraines can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/understanding-migraine-aura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Migraine Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says 25% to 30% of people experience migraine aura, where they see sparks or bright dots or experience tingling on one side of their body. \u201cMigraines are more than just a bad headache,\u201d Dr. Cho explains. \u201cThey can be recurring, vary in intensity, and last from a few hours to several days.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/living-with-migraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine Research Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates migraines affect 39 million men, women, and children in the United States and 1 billion worldwide. Despite the high prevalence of migraine, many people with migraine go untreated. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s42399-019-00124-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 1 in 5 people didn\u2019t realize they could get preventive migraine relief. Others weren\u2019t aware that migraines can often be triggered by hormones (especially during menstrual cycles and menopause), an irregular sleep schedule, dehydration, certain foods, alcohol, and caffeine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect that you have migraine, your physician will take your medical history and conduct a physical with a neurological exam. They will ask how often you have symptoms, if you have a family history of migraines, and inquire about your \u201cheadache burden,\u201d or how many days each month you experience migraines and the impact they have on your life (whether you\u2019re forced to miss work and other events).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If OTC treatments haven\u2019t worked and you experience severe pain from headaches, there are prescription acute and preventive medications that can improve your quality of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf patients are experiencing migraines two or more days a week, I\u2019ll typically put them on a preventative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(also known as prophylactic)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medication,\u201d Dr. Cho says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute prescription medications used to treat migraine include triptans such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imitrex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imitrex (sumatriptan)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/maxalt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxalt (rizatriptan)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ubrelvy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ubrelvy (ubrogepant)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/reyvow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reyvow (lasmiditan)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventive medications include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nurtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nurtec ODT (rimegepant)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: pills taken orally\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/topamax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topamax (topiramate)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: pills taken orally\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aimovig\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aimovig (erenumab)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: monthly injection\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/botox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Botox (botulinum toxin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injected into the face every three months\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have tried a migraine medication in the past without success, talk with your doctor about some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/new-migraine-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newer treatment options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many of the older medications used to prevent migraines were initially approved to treat other medical conditions such as depression or hypertension. These newer medications were developed specifically to treat migraines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmong the newer class of prescription medications are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cgrp-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/monoclonal-antibodies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoclonal antibodies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that block a pathway involved in the migraine process,\u201d Dr. Cho says. \u201cThese are injectables administered every one to three months and have been shown to help some patients have fewer migraines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5012937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might also prove useful in treating migraines and cluster headaches. Talk to your physician or pharmacist about the appropriate dosage and whether melatonin might work as part of your migraine treatment plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other alternative treatments like acupuncture may help as well. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD001218.pub3\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One systematic review of 22 clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the frequency of headache in people with migraine dropped by 50% or more in up to 59% of individuals receiving acupuncture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/migraine-definition\/\"><b>What is migraine?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"overuse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Medication overuse headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most people turn to medications at the first sign of a headache, this approach can also lead to rebound headaches, also known as medication overuse headaches. If you use headache medication more than two or three times a week, it could trigger medication overuse headaches when the medication wears off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInstead of relieving symptoms, this can cause a secondary or more frequent headache,\u201d Dr. Cho says. \u201cBreaking the cycle of rebound headaches involves working with your doctor to stop the acute drugs and to begin taking preventive medications for your headaches.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-overuse-headache\/\"><b>Rebound headaches, explained<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Caffeine headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you regularly consume caffeine and abruptly stop, you may experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430790\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effects, the most common of which is a headache. According to research, a caffeine headache may begin about 12 hours after your last cup of coffee and continue for two to 9 days. If you\u2019ve decided to stop using caffeine, it is best to reduce your usage gradually to reduce the probability of a caffeine headache.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing a headache caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/quitting-caffeine-the-headache-free-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caffeine withdrawal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over-the-counter pain relievers may help, but make sure they do not contain caffeine. And do your best to stay hydrated, which can help to minimize caffeine withdrawal symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"exertion\"><b>7. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exertion headaches<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exertion headaches feel like pulsations on both sides of the head and typically occur during or after <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strenuous<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like exercise. They are more common in hot weather and at high altitude, but according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/primary-exercise-headache\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Migraine Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these headaches are rare. If you experience the onset of a headache during exercise, it\u2019s important to see a healthcare provider to rule out other causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/headache\/primary-exertion-headache\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To treat exertion headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your provider may prescribe the anti-inflammatory medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/indomethacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indomethacin.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Beta-blockers such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nadolol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nadolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/propranolol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also be prescribed. As well, your provider might recommend supplementing with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Warming up before engaging in physical exercise may also be helpful. Taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30-60 minutes before you work out may also help to prevent exertion headaches.
