If insomnia persists, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professional<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459223\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will typically prescribe<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mirtazapine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mirtazapine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trazodone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trazodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sleep-aids-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gastrointestinal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, may get better as the body adjusts to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If diarrhea persists, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may prescribe mirtazapine along with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Diarrhea could, however, be a potentially serious problem in any person with an electrolyte imbalance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"erectile-dysfunction\">Prozac and erectile dysfunction<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Prozac-fluoxetine-hydrochloride-3205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% to 7%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients report erectile dysfunction (ED) when taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another 2% to 8% report ejaculation dysfunction. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wellbutrin-sr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bupropion) or an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-pills-drugs-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ED medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/viagra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sildenafil) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cialis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tadalafil) for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6007725\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Saffron may help with ejaculation dysfunction. However, erectile dysfunction is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may need to switch to another type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"angle-closure-glaucoma\">Prozac and angle-closure glaucoma<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angle-closure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is caused by the closing of the opening (angle) between the iris and the cornea that drains fluid from the inside of the eye. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes pupils to dilate, so it may close that opening in people with uncorrected \u201cnarrow angles.\u201d Pressure builds up behind the eye very rapidly and can result in permanent vision loss in less than a day. The incidence is unknown, but immediately stop taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and get emergency medical attention at any sign of angle-closure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling or redness in or around the eye<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"suicide\">Prozac and suicide<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a black box warning stating that taking the drug can cause children, teens, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to become suicidal. The overall incidence is between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Prozac-fluoxetine-hydrochloride-3205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.1% and 1%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but older adults are at a considerably lower risk. It is important that young people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are monitored for signs of suicidality and other behaviors such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New or sudden changes in mood or behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide attempts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acting on dangerous impulses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acting aggressively or violently<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thoughts about suicide or dying<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsening<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression or anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation, restlessness, irritability, or anger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme increase in activity or talking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will improve as the body gets used to the medicine. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a half-life of two to four days, but it is converted by the body into another drug that works just like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That drug, norfluoxetine, has a half-life of four to 16 days. That means that the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can take anywhere from a week to a month to fade after the last dose has been taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, angle-closure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heart problems, severely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low sodium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will require medical attention to get better. Some of the most severe, such as heart problems or angle-closure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may have life-long complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Prozac contraindications &amp; warnings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause problems in some people because of pre-existing physical or medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has not classified <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a controlled substance and no studies have been completed about its potential for abuse or physical dependence. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was first introduced in 1987. Since then, there has been no evidence that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or addiction, even in patients who have been treated for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196%2812%2961044-1\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overdose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause serious and lifelong medical problems including death. Get emergency medical treatment if an overdose is expected or if any symptoms of an overdose are experienced.
