They\u2019re statements like, \u201cAn apple a day keeps the doctor away.\u201d But is there any merit to these sayings or are they better left in the past?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 common superstitions about your health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, learn more about the most common old wives\u2019 tales to find out what\u2019s fact and what\u2019s fiction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Mostly fiction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This old wives\u2019 tale favorite is one of the earliest ones many of us heard. Unfortunately, a 2015 study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2210883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Internal Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that there was no significant difference in doctor\u2019s visits between people who ate an apple a day and those who didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not all bad news\u2014daily apple eaters did appear to use fewer prescription medications. And of course, apples are packed with fiber, vitamins, and are a good snack choice for most people, including those on a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-cholesterol-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-cholesterol diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Feed a cold, starve a fever.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Mostly fact.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you be focused on food when you\u2019re sick? This folk remedy rings mostly true. Eating when you have a fever can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fever-temperature\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise body temperature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> further and can make you feel worse, especially if there is nausea or vomiting involved, says Julie Miller Jones, Ph.D., emeritus professor of nutrition at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn., and a member of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/grainfoodsfoundation.org\/experts\/julie-miller-jones-phd-ln-cns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grain Foods Foundation&#8217;s Scientific Advisory Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To lower a fever or keep it from rising, it\u2019s best to stick to chicken broth, fluids, and foods that are easy to digest, like scrambled eggs, toast, pasta, or applesauce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soups and broths when you have a cold are a good idea, she said, because they\u2019re hydrating and often use veggies in their preparation. Ginger ale helps an upset stomach.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Mostly fact.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The folk medicine favorite of reaching for a ginger drink when your stomach is unsettled is a good idea. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6341159\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in any form can help with nausea and an upset stomach,\u201d says Miller. Although ginger ale contains minimal amounts of ginger, it does provide fluid that\u2019s often needed. A better choice is nonalcoholic ginger beer because it\u2019s usually packed with much more ginger than ginger ale. Increasing vitamin C helps get rid of a cold more quickly.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Partly fiction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you start gobbling down vitamin C when you feel a cold coming on? It turns out that regularly eating foods with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like broccoli, strawberries, and citrus fruits, or supplementing can reduce both the duration and severity of colds in adults and children, says Miller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, \u201cstudies show inconsistent results when vitamin C is therapeutically consumed, or after a cold has begun, when it comes to reducing duration, symptoms, or severity,\u201d she explains. It\u2019s unlikely that the extra onslaught of vitamins helps your body fight the cold any faster. Flu shots give you the flu.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Fiction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a more recent old wives\u2019 tale that now circulates annually, but it was a categoric no from both Miller and Rachel Trippett, MD, a family physician with the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/albuquerque\/healthcarefacilities\/zuniramah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Public Health Service Indian Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-reactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flu vaccines cannot give you the flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, \u201cflu vaccines promote your immune system to produce antibodies to provide protection against infection caused by the viruses used to formulate the vaccine,\u201d Miller says. Flu vaccines given with a needle are made with inactivated viruses or only a single protein of the virus. Nasal spray vaccines do contain live viruses, but these have been weakened enough that they will not cause illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients vaccinated against the flu have been documented to have reduced severity of illness deaths, likelihood of intensive care unit (ICU) admission, ICU length of stay, and overall duration of hospitalization,\u201d explains Miller. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the best tools we have for protecting people against the flu,\u201d says Dr. Trippett.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-statistics-infographic\/\"><b>Everything you need to know about the flu shot<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>6. Eating chocolate gives you acne.\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Mostly fiction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your teenage self may still be wondering about this, but the answer isn\u2019t so clear-cut. Some studies have found that chocolate is one of the foods associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/acne-treatment-for-teens\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acne in adolescents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and young adults and one found that eating dark chocolate<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26711092\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exacerbated existing acne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in males, but \u201cassociation doesn\u2019t mean causation,\u201d says Miller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, it could be that a diet rich in chocolate may be lacking other important food groups. \u201cThe question to be asked is \u2018what dietary changes are needed overall?\u2019\u201d explains Miller.
