Whether allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is triggered by pollen or other allergens, up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/climateandhealth\/effects\/allergen.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 million Americans suffer from allergies each year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. This country spends more than $18 billion each year on care and treatment. Gesundheit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans have a plethora of over-the-counter options for treating their allergy symptoms, including oral antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops. Sometimes doctors may recommend a decongestant as well. But as many allergy sufferers will tell you, there is often no one perfect medicine that will relieve all of their symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why so many people consider \u201cdoubling up\u201d on allergy meds, for example, Claritin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/non-drowsy-benadryl\/\">Benadryl<\/a>. Health-conscious Americans are often aware that they shouldn\u2019t take more than the recommended dose of any medication. But is it safe to take two different medicines together? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allegra-vs-claritin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is combining Allegra and Claritin okay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/benadryl-vs-claritin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Benadryl with Claritin?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We checked in with some medical experts to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/benadryl-allergy-medicine-and-alcohol\/\"><b>Is it safe to mix alcohol and allergy medication?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can you mix allergy meds?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most allergy medicines should not be combined with one another, according to Susan Besser, MD, a primary care provider at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/susan-besser-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercy Medical Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Baltimore, Maryland. Unless, that is, you\u2019re directed by a healthcare provider. There are certain exceptions when combining treatments is okay\u2014and even recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the most common type of allergy medication. There are two classes of antihistamines:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First-generation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though effective at blocking histamines, these medications cross the blood-brain barrier, which can lead to side effects such as drowsiness and sedation, and can affect concentration, alertness, and memory. Examples include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxylamine-succinate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unisom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydroxyzine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vistaril<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Second-generation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These newer medications are very effective, safe, and cross the blood-brain barrier to a significantly less extent, which lessens the severity of adverse effects and interactions. Examples include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xyzal-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xyzal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to know the type you\u2019re taking when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determining the safety of taking multiple antihistamines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, you should not mix multiple second-generation antihistamines. \u201cWhen mixed together, the antihistaminergic effects of these medications act synergistically, and may cause or worsen symptoms of allergies like drowsiness, dry eyes, dizziness, low blood pressure, and high heart rate, difficulties urinating,\u201d says says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eva-shelton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eva Shelton, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an internal medicine physician at the Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital in Boston.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/taking-antihistamines-daily\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick one and take it daily.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These medicines work better to control symptoms if you take them daily.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are some situations when it\u2019s recommended to take a second-generation antihistamine during the day, and a first-generation antihistamine at night. Here\u2019s what you should know about mixing common antihistamines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining second-generation antihistamines and Benadryl should be avoided, unless you\u2019re instructed to do so by a healthcare professional, advises <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/abeer-siddiqi-md-78b01316a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abeer Siddiqi, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist and immunologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonent.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston ENT &amp; Allergy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Houston, TX.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Benadryl with Claritin?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are some conditions for which we can prescribe and recommend a first-generation antihistamine like Benadryl at night and second-generation antihistamine like Claritin during the day,\u201d says Dr. Siddiqi. For example, for allergic reactions or hives, your provider might recommend this combination. However, it should be for the shortest period of time necessary and under the supervision of a physician. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Siddiqi, taking Benadryl with Claritin may result in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedation, drowsiness, constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth, and neurocognitive decline including early onset dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Allegra and Benadryl?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra and Benadryl may be combined in rare circumstances, but only under the supervision of a physician, says Dr. Siddiqi. Most of the time, mixing Benadryl with Allegra should be avoided, she says. To avoid potential side effects like dry mouth and eyes, constipation, drowsiness, and dizziness, it\u2019s best to stick to one antihistamine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I take Claritin and Zyrtec?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some conditions for which adults can use Claritin and Zyrtec together, but for only a short period of time, according to Dr. Siddiqi. And because there are certain comorbidities that alter the pharmacokinetics of these medications\u2013how they are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted by the body, these should be screened for prior to prescribing, she says. Dr. Siddiqi says Zyrtec is a better product if you\u2019re experiencing severe symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our allergies newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Allergies Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of combining antihistamines<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Duane Gels, an allergist with Annapolis Allergy and Asthma in Annapolis, Maryland, agrees that combining more than one oral antihistamine is unwise. \u201cHere\u2019s the problem with doubling up,\u201d says Dr. Gels. \u201cThe FDA requires testing for these drugs to determine their safety, and the testing costs money. The Claritin folks will pay for safety studies in order to get their drug approved, and so will Allegra. But Claritin won\u2019t pay for studies showing it\u2019s safe to take with Allegra. And Allegra won\u2019t pay for studies saying it is safe to take with Claritin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because taking too many oral antihistamines together can lead to antihistamine poisoning, causing symptoms such as dry mouth, headache, gastrointestinal agitation, fast heartbeat, agitation, blood pressure disturbances, issues with balance and coordination, and behavioral changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\/what-is\"><b>Benadryl details<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\/what-is\"><b>Claritin details<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\/what-is\"><b>Zyrtec details<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\/what-is\"><b>Allegra details<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xyzal-allergy-24hr\/what-is\"><b>Xyzal details<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, you should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/articles\/2012-jun\/antihistamines-using-them-safely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always follow the dosing recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the drug label, as overdosing on any medication can cause potential side effects. High doses of antihistamines\u2014even the \u201cnon-sedating\u201d kind\u2014can cause drowsiness and rapid heart rate. Medicines such as Zyrtec and Claritin are only \u201cnon-drowsy\u201d at the FDA-approved dose. What\u2019s more, an overdose of the \u201csedating\u201d antihistamines (think Benadryl) can cause adverse events like seizures and hallucinations. It is important to refer to the drug label\u2014or ask your pharmacist or your child\u2019s pediatrician\u2014before giving any allergy medication to a child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\/dosage\"><b>Benadryl dosage<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining antihistamines and allergy nasal sprays<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If oral antihistamines alone aren\u2019t relieving your symptoms, \u201cI would suggest topical nasal steroids, assuming they don\u2019t have a contraindication,\u201d says Dr. Gels. \u201cThose are nasal sprays. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasacort-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasacort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhinocort<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available over the counter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should avoid nasal decongestant sprays such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxymetazoline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxymetazoline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-sinus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) unless absolutely needed. Even then, do not use Afrin for more than three days. These drugs cause rebound congestion, which is a worsening of nasal congestion due to overuse of the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rebound-congestion-nasal-spray-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you suffering from Afrin addiction?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining antihistamines and allergy eye drops<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf itchy eyes are the patient\u2019s main issue, a topical antihistamine (eye drops) is better,\u201d Dr. Gels says. Some choices include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zaditor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ketotifen) or Pataday (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/olopatadine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olopatadine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) over the counter, or olopatadine by prescription, if insurance pays for it. For example, Zyrtec-D is cetirizine combined with pseudoephedrine, the active ingredient in Sudafed, and Claritin-D is loratadine combined with pseudoephedrine. These medications (an antihistamine + decongestant product) can be safely taken in an appropriate dosage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, be sure not to add an additional dose on top of a combination pill. If you take another pain killer or decongestant at the same time, that could cause an overdose as well. Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, should check with their healthcare provider before taking this, or any, medication.
