There are plenty of cold remedies like an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant nasal spray, neti pot, or a humidifier that can provide immediate relief and kickstart the healing process. Plus, it\u2019s easy to add several of these remedies to an overall wellness routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, we take a deep dive into how to treat a cold, remedies you can try at home\u2014including 18 natural cold remedies and four over-the-counter and prescription medication treatments\u2014and when to see a healthcare provider for cold symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"17-home-remedies-for-cold-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17 home remedies for cold symptoms\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several respiratory viruses, including rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, and human parainfluenza virus, cause the common cold. In most people, a cold will run its course in about a week to 10 days. If you\u2019re immunocompromised, have allergies, or asthma, a cold can develop into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pneumonia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or bronchitis. Getting plenty of rest and staying well-hydrated are the best ways to recover \u2013 there is no cure for the common cold. But if you\u2019re dealing with a cold virus, consider trying one or more of the following home remedies to make your symptoms more bearable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-drink-plenty-of-fluids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Drink plenty of fluids\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStaying well-hydrated helps thin out mucus and makes it easier to clear nasal congestion or cough up sputum,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/julia-blank-md-6b034b\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julia Blank, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, family medicine physician at Santa Monica Family Physicians in California. She recommends water, juice, tea, or broth, but make sure you avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-use-a-cool-mist-humidifier\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Use a cool-mist humidifier<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another useful remedy is to moisturize the air with a cool-mist humidifier, which can clear nasal passages and help loosen congestion, says Dr. Blank. Whenever possible, use distilled water instead of tap water, set the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002104.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unit to 30% to 50% humidity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and always follow the directions that come with the unit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-eat-chicken-noodle-soup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Eat chicken noodle soup\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicken noodle soup might be good for the soul, but it\u2019s also an excellent home remedy for a cold. \u201cChicken soup helps with hydration, the warm fluid can help soothe a sore throat, and cysteine\u2014an amino acid in chicken soup\u2014may help thin mucus and ease congestion,\u201d explains Dr. Blank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-ramp-up-your-rest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Ramp up your rest\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plenty of rest <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when you\u2019re sick is important for your immune system to be able to fight off cold viruses. Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night and take naps during the day. Kids need nine to 12 hours, and teens should get eight to 10 hours each night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-soothe-a-sore-throat-with-lozenges\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Soothe a sore throat with lozenges\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help temporarily soothe a sore throat, Dr. Blank recommends throat lozenges. \u201cMenthol lozenges can temporarily clear nasal passages and soothe a sore throat.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-gargle-with-salt-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Gargle with salt water\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re dealing with a sore and scratchy throat, consider gargling with salt water. Dr. Blank says this old-school home remedy can help relieve throat discomfort temporarily. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Take a drink, but do not swallow, and gargle in the back of your throat for 10 to 30 seconds. Spit it out when done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-drink-warm-fluids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Drink warm fluids\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou want to thin the mucus in the throat and nose, and warm fluids help do that,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/payel-gupta-md-facaai-4b178411\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payel Gupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a triple board-certified doctor in pediatrics, allergy and immunology, and internal medicine. Try a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/got-a-cold-try-some-honey\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoonful of honey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you\u2019ve already taken an OTC cough or cold medicine but still need some relief. Not only does honey help soothe a sore throat, but Dr. Blank says it also temporarily eases a cough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-breathe-in-some-steam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Breathe in some steam\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gupta recommends steam when battling a cold. Use a vaporizer or make a tent out of a towel as you sit over a bowl of hot water and breathe in the steam, which is soothing and helps loosen mucus and phlegm. \u201cJust make sure you\u2019re not sitting too close to the bowl, and the steam isn&#8217;t burning delicate mucus membranes,\u201d Dr. Gupta advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-use-a-neti-pot\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Use a neti pot<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neti pots are generally considered safe for sinus issues such as the common cold. Also called a nasal irrigation device, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/rinsing-your-sinuses-neti-pots-safe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FDA) recommends using distilled or sterile water, boiled and cooled tap water, or water passed through a filter. They also say adding a saline solution to the water helps minimize irritation as the water passes through the nasal passages. Dr. Gupta recommends using a neti-pot to irrigate the sinuses about once a day. \u201cThis will lessen post-nasal drip, which causes coughs and irritates the throat,\u201d she says. Just make sure you disinfect the neti pot every time you use it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"11-take-an-elderberry-supplement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. Take an elderberry supplement<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elderberry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/is-elderberry-really-an-effective-cold-and-flu-cure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplements, gummies, teas, lozenges, extracts and syrups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may help to reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms. However, Dr. Blank points out that the mechanism of action is not clear. It may play a role in the body&#8217;s immune reaction to cold and flu viruses. According to a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848651\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, air travelers using elderberry 10 days before travel until four to five days after arriving at their destination experienced a two-day shorter duration of the cold and also noticed a reduction in cold symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"12-consume-zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12. Consume zinc<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3394849\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zinc formulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as lozenges, tablets, or syrup may reduce the duration of a cold by about one day, especially when taken within 24-48 hours of the onset of symptoms. But a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/10\/1\/e031662\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examining the effect of zinc lozenges on cold duration found they had no benefit. Still, zinc is safe to try, just watch out for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/zinc-for-the-common-cold-not-for-me-201102171498\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects like nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"13-drink-beetroot-juice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13. Drink beetroot juice<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beetroot is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8565237\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutritional powerhouse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with antioxidant, antitumor, and liver-protecting properties. What\u2019s more, the root lowers blood pressure, helps stabilize blood sugar levels, and enhances physical and cognitive performance. But does drinking beetroot juice help if you have a cold? According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30682333\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study, ingesting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the juice during psychological stress is protective against cold symptoms, particularly among those with asthma. Try drinking a cup a day to reap the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/beet-root-juice-each-day-keeps-the-doctor-away\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune-enhancing benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of beetroot juice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"14-try-probiotic-drinks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14. Try probiotic drinks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that probiotics can enhance gut health and improve digestion. But did you know that drinking probiotic beverages can help reduce cold symptoms too? A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5995450\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a yogurt drink containing the probiotic strains <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus casei 431, and Lactobacillus fermentium PCC offered protection against cold and flu-like respiratory viruses. And another recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332220311665\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the probiotic drink kefir offered strong protection against many viruses, including Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"15-supplement-with-vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15. Supplement with vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5949172\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people with low vitamin D levels in their blood are at increased risk of catching colds. On the flip side, supplementing with the vitamin decreases your risk of coming down with the common cold and upper respiratory tract infections. To help your immune system ward off these viral offenders, experts recommend aiming for 1000-2000 IUs per day. Just make sure you start supplementing before the onset of symptoms\u2014taking extra D once you\u2019re sick <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shorten the duration of your cold, but more research is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"16-use-a-cold-compress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16. Use a cold compress<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cold is accompanied by a sinus headache, placing a cold compress over the painful area may help to ease your symptoms by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content.aspx?contenttypeid=85&amp;contentid=p00918\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To make a compress at home, moisten a cloth or towel and freeze it for 15 minutes before placing it on the area of discomfort. If you have a fever, placing a cool, damp cloth on your forehead can help bring it down, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"17-sleep-with-an-extra-pillow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17. Sleep with an extra pillow<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colds usually come with congestion, which often worsens at night. That\u2019s because mucus doesn\u2019t drain as easily when lying down. To keep mucus from accumulating in your head and throat, try elevating your head with an extra pillow\u2014it may be enough to keep that extra congestion at bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cold-remedies-that-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold remedies that don\u2019t work\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many time-tested and proven remedies for treating cold symptoms. However, there are several that lack evidence or expert support to warrant using them when dealing with a cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antibiotics\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntibiotics are for fighting bacteria, not viruses that cause colds,\u201d says Dr. Blank. In fact, she points out that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/antibiotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics won\u2019t help you get well faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can cause side effects. Although taking echinacea won\u2019t shorten the length of your cold, it may be helpful when taken <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4068831\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prophylactically<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014that is, as a preventive measure to fend off cold viruses. If you decide to take echinacea capsules or extract, follow the instructions on the label, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/19313-echinacea-oral-dosage-forms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t take it for more than two weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unless advised by your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"showering\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showering<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While taking a hot shower and breathing in all that steam can help open up clogged nasal passages, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD001728.pub6\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on whether heated, humidified air is beneficial for colds is inconclusive. That said, it can\u2019t hurt (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bjgp.org\/content\/62\/600\/e473\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as long as the water isn\u2019t scalding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), so if taking a hot, steamy shower makes you feel better, try it the next time you\u2019re sick.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"menthol-salve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menthol salve<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical ointments containing menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus oil, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vicks-vaporub\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicks VapoRub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are designed to alleviate coughs associated with cold viruses, making breathing easier. Although some people may use a dab of the ointment under their nose to help open nasal passages, doing this<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/common-cold\/expert-answers\/nasal-decongestant\/faq-20058569\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t work to reduce nasal congestion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What\u2019s more, using Vicks VapoRub under the nose isn\u2019t recommended by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vicks.com\/en-us\/safety-and-faqs\/faqs\/vicks-vaporub-faq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturer\u2013 it should only be applied to the neck and chest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And although there are salves specifically formulated for use under the nose, research on their efficacy is lacking. Before trying one of these products, consult your healthcare provider for advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-a-cold-when-natural-remedies-don-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat a cold when natural remedies don\u2019t work\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When natural remedies fail to curb cold symptoms, it might be time to try an OTC product or prescription medication for the common cold. While not an exhaustive list, here are four treatments to consider.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-ask-your-healthcare-provider-about-atrovent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Ask your healthcare provider about Atrovent\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Blank says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atrovent-hfa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrovent (ipratropium)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nasal spray can help to reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms. Parents of young children or pregnant women should talk to their healthcare provider about the safety of Atrovent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-pain-relievers-to-the-rescue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Pain relievers to the rescue\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC pain relievers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aka Tylenol) are often recommended when dealing with cold symptoms like fever or pain.
