(Other metabolic changes include high blood sugar and high cholesterol.) Patients who take Seroquel will be monitored by their healthcare professional for weight changes. In children who take Seroquel, weight changes will be compared to weight changes expected for normal growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"liver-function\">Liver function<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal liver function tests can be a common side effect of Seroquel. In most cases, there are no symptoms, and although the abnormal tests may appear quickly, they often return to normal with continued treatment. Liver function will be monitored regularly during treatment with Seroquel.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Note: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have liver problems will be prescribed Seroquel will caution, and the healthcare provider will start at a low dose, slowly increasing if needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\">Serious side effects of Seroquel<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects can occur as well. Some serious side effects may be delayed or long-term. High blood sugar can happen in people who already have diabetes, or in people that have never had diabetes. Symptoms of high blood sugar include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased hunger and thirst\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling weak or tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fruity-smelling breath<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients who experience these symptoms should call their healthcare provider immediately. High blood sugar can lead to serious and life-threatening complications, including coma or death. Patients who have diabetes or risk factors for diabetes will be monitored closely for changes in blood sugar during Seroquel treatment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"extrapyramidal-effects\">Seroquel and extrapyramidal effect<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that block <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> frequently cause a wide range of movement disorders called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK534115\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extrapyramidal effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most common include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Involuntary muscle contractions (dystonia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle twitching (dyskinesia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repetitive jerking of facial and neck muscles (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tardive dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urgent hard-to-control restless movements (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/restless-leg-syndrome-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restless legs syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, finger tapping, squirming, marching back and forth, teeth grinding)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinsonism (symptoms similar to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: tremor, slow movements, muscle stiffness, stooped posture)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atypical antipsychotics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are less likely to cause extrapyramidal effects, they are still a possibility and are more likely at higher doses. Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Seroquel-quetiapine-fumarate-2185.6108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.1% to 5.6%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience dystonia, another 0.1% to 5.5% will experience parkinsonism, 0.1% to 3.8% will experience muscle twitching, 2% report restless legs syndrome, and 0.1% to 1% will experience <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tardive dyskinesia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"neuroleptic-malignant-syndrome\">Seroquel and neuroleptic malignant syndrome<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a potentially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482282\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life-threatening <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotic drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that block <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the brain, including Seroquel. The overall incidence among people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antipsychotics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and similar drugs is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482282\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.1% to 3.2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Seroquel-quetiapine-fumarate-2185.6108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has not determined the likelihood of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NMS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Watch for signs such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rigid muscles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, heartbeat, or breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuroleptic malignant syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires immediate treatment to prevent serious complications or death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The active ingredient in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/quetiapine-fumarate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quetiapine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has a half-life of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Quetiapine#section=Biological-Half-Life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six to seven hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the time it takes the body to eliminate half a dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quetiapine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the body, so an entire dose is eliminated in about 30 hours. Most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quetiapine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dizziness, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, headache, fatigue, and postural <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypotension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will fade within that time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the metabolic effects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quetiapine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high cholesterol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, high <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triglycerides<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, underactive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may take several days or longer to return to normal. Expectant mothers may need to discuss with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the risks and benefits of taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the third trimester. There is, however, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsening<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depression or suicide in children with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major depressive disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People older than 65 years can take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seroquel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the same doses as younger adults, though starting doses may need to be smaller and increased more slowly than in younger adults.
