Baking soda for bloating is the latest health fad making the rounds on TikTok. But does it work? These are the bloating remedies that can actually help deflate your tummy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating is that full stomach feeling\u2014when your abdomen feels inflated like a balloon with gas or air. You might even notice that your belly has swollen in size, which is called distension. This can be caused by overeating, gas trapped in your digestive tract, or gas forming in your small intestine after eating certain foods. Gluten or lactose are two common culprits that your digestive system may have difficulty breaking down. Burping, belching or passing gas might eventually alleviate the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPhysiologically, you can feel bloated if you had a very big meal or a bunch of carbonated beverages,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/ashkan-farhadi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ashkan Farhadi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a gastroenterologist at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center and director of MemorialCare Medical Group\u2019s Digestive Disease Project in Fountain Valley, California. It\u2019s also possible that something potentially more serious could be the cause of bloating, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroparesis, a condition where your stomach empties too slowly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premenstrual syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBloating is one of those ubiquitous symptoms with many possible causes, including gastrointestinal and gynecologic,\u201d says Alyssa Dweck, MD, a gynecologist and host of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/businessofthev.com\/elementor-149\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business of the V podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re not sure why you\u2019re experiencing abdominal bloating, consult your healthcare provider. You need to know what you\u2019re dealing with first. Baking soda and water for bloating<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mix a little baking soda into a glass of water, and what do you have? A TikTok phenomenon. But what do the healthcare experts say about this potential remedy for bloating? \u201cThis is essentially a DIY antacid,\u201d says Dr. Dweck, explaining that baking soda is basic in terms of its pH content. This neutralizes stomach acid along with bloating and discomfort. Dr. Dweck says, \u201cIt may work, and it\u2019s likely safe in a pinch\u2014but yuck!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s harmless,\u201d Dr.\u00a0 Farhadi agrees. \u201cIt could be helpful, but it\u2019s going to be very temporary.\u201d If you respond to the combination of baking soda and water, it\u2019s likely that you have acid reflux and would also respond to antacids like Tums, which may be a more effective treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you really want to try it, mix \u00bc to \u00bd teaspoon of baking soda into one cup of water and sip away. \u201cThis remedy is safe for short-term use for most adults, but not for young children or women who are pregnant,\u201d says registered dietitian Nicole Lindel, RD, an advisor for<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everlywell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everlywell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAdults should not use baking soda for longer than two weeks at a time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Flat water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you frequently drink a lot of soda or seltzer, you may be unintentionally adding extra gas to your gut. In that case, replacing those beverages with regular water or non-carbonated beverages can help. Carbonated beverages can also make acid reflux symptoms worse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Apple cider vinegar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a dearth of clinical research on the matter, but plenty of anecdotal evidence says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/apple-cider-vinegar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apple cider vinegar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a bloating remedy. Some people find that it helps with acid reflux, which can contribute to bloating. Try adding a tablespoon to a small glass of water when you feel bloated and see if you notice any improvements. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work for everyone,\u201d Dr. Farhadi says. \u201cIt\u2019s harmless. If you try it and it works, continue. If it doesn\u2019t work, don\u2019t push it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Smaller meals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might adjust your eating habits to see if a change might reduce your abdominal bloating. \u201cRather than eating one or two large meals a day, eat smaller, more frequent meals every two to three hours,\u201d says Lindel. Eliminate or reduce the foods that cause bloating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get moving! You may have noticed that doing crunches can cause flatulence, but that\u2019s not the only activity that helps relieve gas. Walking, jogging or other<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17029608\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help get gas moving through your digestive tract so it doesn\u2019t remain in your belly and cause bloating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Low FODMAP diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/fodmap-diet-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FODMAPs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are short-chain carbohydrates\u2014that is, they\u2019re sugars in certain foods that tend to cause intestinal distress because the small intestine doesn\u2019t absorb them very well. (FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols.) A few examples of high-FODMAP foods are onions, wheat, brussels sprouts, legumes and lentils, and some sweeteners like sorbitol and xylitol that are added to sugar-free chewing gum and candy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBloating associated with IBS can often be managed with diet,\u201d says Lindel. \u201cFor IBS, I typically recommend patients follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibs-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low FODMAP diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is another temporary elimination diet to help determine potential food triggers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Probiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/vitamins-and-supplements\/health-benefits-of-taking-probiotics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probiotic supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can aid in digestion and improve gut health, according to Harvard Health. Probiotics are one of the natural remedies \u201cintended to balance the delicate microbiome in the GI tract,\u201d Dr. Dweck explains. \u201cProbiotics are often helpful in my clinical experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Prebiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/prebiotics-probiotics-and-your-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prebiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are specialized plant fibers in many fruits and vegetables, work by stimulating the growth of good gut bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic. But they can worsen the symptoms of IBS and can cause digestive problems like gas, diarrhea, and yes, bloating. If you have IBS or FODMAP food intolerance, this<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiasurgery.org\/news\/2017\/02\/09\/what-you-need-know-about-prebiotics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be a remedy to avoid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Fennel<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fennel seeds have long been<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780123756886100556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used in Eastern Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address symptoms like bloating. \u201cWhile there is not enough scientific evidence to support fennel as a digestive aid, it may be worth trying, specifically in adults experiencing indigestion, as fennel is deemed safe on occasion and in moderation,\u201d says Lindel. However, she cautions, if you have issues with high-FODMAP foods, this might be something to steer clear of.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Massage therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.umich.edu\/1libr\/MBCP\/AbdominalSelfmassage.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massaging your abdomen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might help relieve cramping, abdominal tightness, and bloating, according to the University of Michigan. Some research indicates that peppermint is effective at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/badgut.org\/information-centre\/a-z-digestive-topics\/peppermint-and-ibs-pain-relief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relieving some symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IBS) such as abdominal cramping and bloating. In fact,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6337770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2019 meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of literature on the subject determined that peppermint oil seems to be a \u201csafe and effective therapy\u201d for abdominal pain and symptoms of IBS. One thing to note here however; peppermint may worsen acid reflux.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications for bloating<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve tried some home remedies without success, it might be time to turn to medication instead. The best medicine may depend on your specific condition. You could also cut back on the carbonated drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you\u2019ve tried eliminating the factors that tend to cause bloating for you without experiencing any relief, that may be a sign that it\u2019s time to consult your doctor. \u201cIf you have a red flag, don\u2019t sit on it,\u201d says Dr. Farhadi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More serious causes of bloating may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine fibroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovarian cysts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colon cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diverticular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celiac disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medical conditions may require other more intensive treatments. So, if you experience bloating along with persistent or severe pain, severe diarrhea, or unexplained weight loss, those are reasons that justify a call to your doctor, says Dr. Farhadi. That\u2019s especially true if you have a close relative with a history of gastrointestinal disease or colon cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women may also want to keep a lookout for symptoms like abnormal vaginal bleeding and vaginal discharge, says Dr. Dweck.
