The most common are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe slowing of the heart<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulmonary edema<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, worsening of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ventricular arrhythmia, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart block<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood cell counts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c57982f2-c7da-488a-7ea9-b9609439ac68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-allergic airway closure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bronchospasm)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including serious skin conditions and asthma-related death<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have problems during cataract surgery that increase the risk of complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiredness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and dizziness are temporary. Some will improve or come and go as the body becomes used to the drug. Most other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will resolve when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is discontinued. Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heartbeat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, will require that the dose be reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like very low blood pressure or heart rate will require emergency medical care. Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be life-threatening and require days or weeks of treatment. Low blood cell counts could also require weeks of treatment. Severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can have lifelong complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Carvedilol contraindications &amp; warnings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be the right drug for everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not cause physical dependence, but\u00a0 in people with coronary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the return of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c57982f2-c7da-488a-7ea9-b9609439ac68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as worsening of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, abnormal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For these patients, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage needs to be gradually reduced over a one- to two-week period. Because coronary artery disease is commonly undiagnosed, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use a tapering dose when stopping <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in any patient.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overdose is a medical emergency. Taking too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause dangerously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dangerously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, airway closure, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shock, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If there\u2019s any suspicion that too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been taken, watch for symptoms of an overdose such as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irregular heartbeats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dizziness, vomiting, weakness, blue skin, fainting, loss of consciousness, and seizures. Call a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poison control center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or get emergency medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contraindications are pre-existing conditions that make a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too unsafe to take. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c57982f2-c7da-488a-7ea9-b9609439ac68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contraindications include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Bronchial asthma: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause life-threatening airway closure in these patients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Second- or third-degree AV block, <\/b><b>sick sinus syndrome<\/b><b>, or very <\/b><b>slow heartbeat<\/b><b> (<\/b><b>bradycardia<\/b><b>): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three are serious problems with the heart\u2019s ability to beat normally. Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> slows down heartbeats, it could result in dangerously <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, abnormal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or compromise the ability of the heart to pump a sufficient amount of blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>People on intravenous heart-stimulating drug therapy for uncompensated <\/b><b>heart failure<\/b><b> or cardiogenic shock: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart-stimulating (inotropic) drugs make the heart work harder, so\u00a0 patients that take these medicines will need to be weaned off intravenous treatment before they can take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Severe <\/b><b>liver disease<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The liver breaks down <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will build up in the bloodstream in people with severe liver failure, increasing the risk and severity of adverse effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>A history of severe <\/b><b>allergic reactions<\/b><b> to <\/b><b>carvedilol<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other pre-existing conditions may be affected by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or they may increase the risk of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Chest pain<\/b><b> caused by artery spasms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Called Prinzmetal\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase the incidence and severity of this type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chest pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Certain types of <\/b><b>heart rhythm<\/b><b> problem: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a common medication to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems. But for certain types of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can actually speed up the heart and cause it to beat chaotically (fibrillation).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Artery problems that slow down or stop the flow of blood: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only increase these problems, so they are used cautiously in these patients. This includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peripheral vascular disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and patients who have had a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Coreg-carvedilol-182.4241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Bronchospastic diseases: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a risk of airway closure (bronchospasms) in people with chronic bronchospastic diseases such as COPD, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/copd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emphysema<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bronchitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bronchitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will use the smallest possible <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose for people that cannot take other blood pressure treatments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Kidney problems: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney function can deteriorate during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment, worsening any existing kidney problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Heart failure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People with low blood pressure or fluid build-up due to congestive heart failure may experience a worsening of symptoms while the dose of carvedilol is adjusted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Diabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and heart failure, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can affect blood sugar, requiring dosage changes in diabetes medications. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carvedilol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also hide the symptoms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a potentially serious problem for anyone who takes insulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Overactive <\/b><b>thyroid<\/b><b> (<\/b><b>hyperthyroidism<\/b><b>) or excess <\/b><b>thyroid<\/b><b> hormones (thyrotoxicosis): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mask the symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypothyroidism-vs-hyperthyroidism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are discontinued, patients could experience a potentially severe worsening of their condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>A type of adrenal gland tumor (<\/b><b>pheochromocytoma<\/b><b>): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blocker<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure.
