The most recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clincalc.com\/DrugStats\/Drugs\/Lisdexamfetamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that almost 1.5 million Americans take Vyvanse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many patients want to know: Can I mix Vyvanse and alcohol? First, it\u2019s important to know how this medication works and other safety information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Vyvanse work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse is a prodrug. This means that the ingredient, lisdexamfetamine, is inactive until it is metabolized in the body into its active form, dextroamphetamine. The exact way it works for ADHD and BED <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=704e4378-ca83-445c-8b45-3cfa51c1ecad&amp;audience=consumer#section-12.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not understood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/cns-stimulant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system (CNS) stimulant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medication that increases levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. It\u2019s thought that the increased levels of dopamine and norepinephrine help improve alertness, attention, energy, and activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Vyvanse a controlled substance?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse is a Schedule II <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/controlled-substances-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-information\/drug-scheduling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule II drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are considered dangerous and have a high potential for abuse and dependence. Vyvanse also has a black box warning, which is the strongest warning required by the FDA. Before prescribing Vyvanse, the healthcare provider will assess the patient for risk of substance abuse. The patient should tell the prescriber if they have ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, street drugs, or prescription drugs. During treatment, the healthcare provider will monitor the patient for signs of abuse and dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cases of long-term use, it\u2019s important to not abruptly stop Vyvanse, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms. However, there are four reasons that you should not mix Vyvanse and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Heart risks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse (and any CNS stimulant) can cause sudden death, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and chest pain. Long-term use of Vyvanse can cause cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/alcohol-and-heart-health-separating-fact-from-fiction#:~:text=Excessive%20alcohol%20intake%20can%20lead,that%20affects%20the%20heart%20muscle.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess alcohol use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also cause high blood pressure and heart problems, including cardiomyopathy. Mixing Vyvanse and alcohol can potentiate these side effects on the heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Alcohol poisoning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Vyvanse stimulates the nervous system, alcohol has the opposite effect. Alcohol is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23713737\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depressant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because the depressant effects of alcohol counteract the stimulant effects of Vyvanse, it can take longer to feel the effects of alcohol. So, people who combine alcohol and Vyvanse may take much longer to feel the effects of alcohol and end up drinking an excessive amount of alcohol. Excess drinking can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/alcohol-poisoning\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a medical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, seizures, vomiting, and passing out. Alcohol poisoning can also affect breathing and heart rate and can lead to a coma and death.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Vyvanse overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since alcohol is a depressant, and Vyvanse is a stimulant, drinking alcohol can counteract Vyvanse\u2019s effects. This may make it feel like the Vyvanse is not working. Then a person may disregard the directions, and take more Vyvanse, which can increase the risk for overdose. An overdose may manifest as a variety of symptoms which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=704e4378-ca83-445c-8b45-3cfa51c1ecad&amp;audience=consumer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overactive reflexes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hallucination\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life-threatening very high fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A life-threatening syndrome due to muscle breakdown<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular heart rate and blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shock\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Convulsions and coma may even occur and can lead to death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Risk for substance abuse<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain people have a higher risk for substance abuse problems than others, including those with ADHD.
