Alcohol, for example, can make you feel drowsy when mixed with some drugs. Research indicates that some food-drug interactions can lessen a drug\u2019s effects or increase its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to speak with your provider or pharmacist about possible interactions any time you begin a new medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-common-food-drug-interactions\"><b>7 common food-drug interactions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and drug interactions can make prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications less effective or cause dangerous side effects. If you find out that a medication you are taking has a food interaction, it may be enough to avoid eating the food for one to two hours before and after taking the medication. But other times, you may need to avoid a specific food altogether. It\u2019s always best to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance on food and medication interactions. Here are a few common culprits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-grapefruit-juice\"><b>1. Grapefruit juice<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you on a prescription statin, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lipitor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zocor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zocor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Then you might want to lay off the grapefruit juice. Compounds from the fruit (called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">furanocoumarins)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can actually prevent an enzyme in your liver and intestines from breaking down the medicine. This can lead to a higher concentration of the drug in the body and potentially result in increased side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even if you aren\u2019t on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you might want to beware of grapefruit-drug interactions. \u201cWhat people don\u2019t realize is that it can interact with a large number of drugs, not just statins,\u201d says Morton Tavel, MD, author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/28245119-health-tips-myths-and-tricks\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Tips, Myths and Tricks: A Physician\u2019s Advice<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAnyone taking virtually any medication should avoid grapefruit juice entirely.\u201d This includes over-the-counter antihistamines, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvhealthsystem.org\/expert-health-articles\/common-food-drug-interactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, birth control, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/grapefruit-and-statins\/\"><b>Grapefruit and statins<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-dairy\"><b>2. Dairy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re on a course of antibiotics, don\u2019t wash your pills down with a glass of milk. Dairy products can make certain antibiotics, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ciprofloxacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ciprofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levofloxacin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxycycline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, less effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have milk products in your stomach, those drugs become a lot less bioavailable,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenhorovitz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Len Horovitz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an internist at Lenox Hill Hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAOIs) should also cut back on strong, aged cheeses, such as Parmesan and Camembert. These cheeses have high levels of tyramine, an amino acid that helps keep your blood pressure in check. High levels of tyramine are associated with migraine headaches and high blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMAOIs block the enzyme responsible for breaking down tyramine, which can cause it to build up and raise your blood pressure,\u201d Dr. Tavel says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-bananas-and-other-potassium-rich-foods\"><b>3. Bananas and other potassium-rich foods<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A high concentration of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-causes-low-potassium\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes bananas healthy for most of us. But you could end up with too much potassium if you eat a bunch of bananas while taking an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ace-inhibitors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lisinopril\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lisinopril<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/captopril\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">captopril<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These medications can cause the body to retain excess potassium that would otherwise be flushed out by the kidneys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPotassium is a great mineral and necessary in our diets, but under certain circumstances it can lead to trouble,\u201d Dr. Tavel says. \u201cAn excessive build-up of potassium can lead to significant problems with your heart rhythm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While bananas are the best-known food for potassium, they\u2019re far from the only food with an abundance of the mineral. Limit your intake of sweet potatoes, mushrooms, potatoes and other high-potassium foods when taking ACE inhibitors. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1124926\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">salt substitutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often replace sodium with potassium chloride.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/potassium-and-blood-pressure\/\"><b>Does potassium affect your blood pressure?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-black-licorice\"><b>4. Black licorice<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black licorice is a polarizing candy. If you happen to love it, you might need to switch to red Twizzlers if your doctor writes you a prescription for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/digoxin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digoxin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Tavel advises. Black licorice contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, which can lower potassium levels and cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3498851\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a toxic effect from digoxin.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even if you stop taking the medication, you might consider giving up black licorice for good. The FDA has warned that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/news\/hidden-risks-black-licorice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just two ounces of black licorice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a day for two weeks can give people 40 years of age and older an irregular heartbeat, requiring hospitalization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-green-leafy-vegetables\"><b>5. Green leafy vegetables<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green vegetables including broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, along with leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, are rich in nutrients, including vitamin K. Vitamin K plays a key role in helping blood to clot, thus preventing excessive bleeding. However, it actually counteracts the effects of a common blood thinner called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/coumadin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coumadin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known by its generic name, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are prescribed warfarin, your doctor will recommend that you don\u2019t drastically alter your intake of foods high in vitamin K. Eating more green leafy vegetables than you normally do can decrease the effects of blood thinners like warfarin and increase the risk of adverse events like heart attack and stroke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-alcohol\"><b>6. Alcohol<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can be harmful if taken with many medications. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixing alcohol with medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can amplify certain side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, fainting, or loss of coordination. Alcohol has also been known to make medications less effective or possibly toxic to the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking alcohol with anti-anxiety medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause increased drowsiness or dizziness. The combination of alcohol and opioid painkillers has a similar effect and can even lead to slow and shallow breathing (respiratory depression), which can be fatal. Alcohol should also be avoided with products containing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to an increased risk of liver damage. Additionally, drinking while taking insulin and other oral diabetes medications can cause low blood sugar. Overall, it\u2019s best to avoid alcohol use with certain medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-fiber\"><b>7. Fiber<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/supplement\/fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fiber<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meals<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and dietary supplements containing fiber may reduce the effectiveness of some medications. These include statins like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ezetimibe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ezetimibe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pravastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pravastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tricyclic antidepressants such as Elavil (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amitriptyline-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amitriptyline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Sinequan (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxepin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxepin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and Tofranil (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/imipramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iImipramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and the mood stabilizer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lithium-carbonate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lithium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fiber and fiber supplements can also reduce the effectiveness of other medications, including the diabetes drugs Diabeta (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glyburide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glyburide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (glucophage), the seizure medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tegretol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tegretol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carbamazepine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbamazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and the heart medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lanoxin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lanoxin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/digoxin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digoxin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid reduced or delayed absorption of your medication, take it one hour before or two to four hours after consuming fiber or taking a fiber supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-check-for-food-drug-interactions\"><b>How to check for food-drug interactions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These foods are simply seven of hundreds of potential food-drug interactions. Ask your pharmacist about foods you should avoid next time you pick up your prescription.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a drug has food interactions, warnings will be noted on the medication\u2019s label or package insert, so be sure to read the information thoroughly.
