Causes, treatment, and prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever strained a muscle or come down with a case of the common cold, you\u2019ve experienced inflammation; it\u2019s your body\u2019s first line of defense against injury, illness, and disease. But inflammation can also occur due to autoimmune disorders like Crohn&#8217;s disease, which causes the body to target and attack <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0own healthy tissues. No matter the cause, the inflammatory process triggers the release of white blood cells to the affected area in order to promote the healing process. This immune system response can cause an array of symptoms\u2014most commonly pain and swelling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is inflammation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation is the body\u2019s immune response to illness, injury, or foreign body. It often results in local redness, warmth, or swelling, or may cause a systemic response such as fever, body aches, or malaise. Inflammation protects the body against harm and also tells the brain and body that it needs to address an issue in order to maintain homeostasis, or a healthy state. \u201cInflammatory proteins are released to kick-start the immune response to rid the body of things like infections or treat an area of distress, say a swollen ankle or an injured heart after a heart attack,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/feinstein.northwell.edu\/institutes-researchers\/our-researchers\/anne-davidson-mbbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne Davidson, MBBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professor in the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and rheumatologist in Manhasset, NY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of inflammation: acute inflammation and chronic inflammation. The purpose of acute inflammation is to repair damage to the body, resulting in increased blood flow to the area. \u201cAcute inflammation is caused by an injury\u2014if you fall and sprain your ankle, your body sends factors to that area to help it heal,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/family-medicine\/dr-eric-michael-ascher-do-11379678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Ascher, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, attending physician at Northwell Health, Family Medicine in New York. \u201cAcute inflammation can also be related to getting sick with a virus or bacterial infection, like when you have the cold, the flu, bronchitis, a headache, or any sort of skin reaction.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic inflammation causes harm to the body and can even lead to damaged tissue and the development of certain diseases. \u201cChronic inflammation is typically linked to a genetic disease, an autoimmune disease, sensitivity to an allergen, or exposure to an irritant over an extended period of time,\u201d Dr. Ascher says. \u201cIt could be arthritis, different cancers, diabetes, heart disease, or genetic and href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/infographic\/chronic-diseases.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 6 out of 10 Americans are living with a chronic illness, and 4 out of 10 have more than one. Seven of the 10 leading causes of death in the United States can be attributed to chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and arthritis. These diseases often cause systemic inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlmost all of the most common diseases\u2014from obesity to Crohn\u2019s disease, are considered to be inflammatory diseases,\u201d Dr. Davidson says. Inflammatory disease is any disease in which there is recruitment of white blood cells to the site of injury. Chronic inflammation can lead to thickened walls of the blood vessels, resulting in organ and tissue damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes inflammation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main cause of inflammation in the body is injury or irritation, which prompts your body to send inflammatory cells to the spot to help heal it, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/centers-of-excellence\/additional-centers\/primary-care-physicians\/find-a-primary-care-doctor\/primary-care-doctors\/kathryn-boling-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathryn A. Boling, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, primary care provider at Mercy Personal Physicians in Lutherville, Maryland. But sometimes, an autoimmune issue occurs. That\u2019s when \u201cyour body identifies something inside of you, decides it doesn\u2019t belong there, and starts attacking it again and again,\u201d she says. Chronic stress and alcohol use are also linked to inflammation. \u201cThere are also genetic risks that are disease specific, making some diseases hereditary,\u201d Dr. Davidson says. \u201cAdditionally, environmental risks like exposure to dust and fumes could lead to inflammatory disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-sequelae\/\"><b>What is post-viral fatigue syndrome?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain is a side effect of both acute and chronic inflammation. \u201cIf you have Crohn&#8217;s disease and you have inflammation in your GI tract, you&#8217;ll have pain,\u201d Dr. Boling says. \u201cIf you strain your back because you just did a deadlift with way too much weight, you\u2019ll have pain.\u201d Pain is typically the first symptom you\u2019ll feel from inflammation. It\u2019s also normal to experience tissue changes that cause swelling or redness. \u201cThat can happen even when an autoimmune disease is causing the inflammation,\u201d Dr. Boling adds. \u201cI&#8217;ve had patients come in with a spot on their throat that is really tender and sore to touch, and it turns out to be Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your body is overcome by inflammation, it sends off different healing factors\u2014fluids, and blood cells\u2014and that causes swelling. When the body produces an inflammatory response for a long time, those cells release a large amount of chemicals that are destructive to normal tissue, causing pain and the breakdown of normal bodily functions. \u201cThere&#8217;s only so much room in the different compartments of our body to hold all of that fluid, so the site of infection starts to push on our nerve endings, and our nerve endings hold our pain factors,\u201d Dr. Ascher explains. \u201cThat&#8217;s why we feel pain with inflammation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classic symptoms of acute inflammation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warmth and redness to the area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of function<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain and stiffness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms can occur, too. When the body sends out inflammatory cells, \u201coftentimes there\u2019ll be fatigue, we\u2019ll have flu-like symptoms, and we\u2019ll be a little feverish. It&#8217;s the body&#8217;s way of overcoming whatever reaction it\u2019s trying to fight,\u201d says Dr. Ascher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the above symptoms, chronic inflammation can cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General feelings of unwellness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Night sweats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diminished mental function<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no one test that can diagnose inflammation, your provider will assess your symptoms, conduct a physical exam, and may order appropriate testing\u2014including blood tests to identify inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny time a patient comes in to see me and mentions that they have weight loss, joint pain, fatigue, fevers, or night sweats, I always do a laboratory work-up, sometimes with imaging [tests], to clue me into what inflammatory disease process we\u2019re looking at,\u201d Dr. Ascher says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each inflammatory disease has its own set of symptoms and physical findings. Based on these, your physician will order different diagnostic tests to help make the final diagnosis. Many of the lab tests for inflammation are non-specific, so it may take time and patience to determine the specific cause or process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suffer from an injury, it\u2019s best to ice the spot right away to fight inflammation. \u201cTake a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, [like ibuprofen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or naproxen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aleve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] (as long as you\u2019re not taking a blood thinner or other contraindicated medication) to decrease inflammation,\u201d Dr. Boling says.
