Buspirone is in a drug category, or class, of its own, and not related to any other medications used for anxiety. The way buspirone works is not completely understood. We do know that it is different from benzodiazepines like Xanax. Studies have shown that buspirone works on serotonin and dopamine receptors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-does-xanax-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Xanax work?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax is part of a large class of prescription medications known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Benzodiazepines work by increasing activity at receptors for a neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This all takes place in the CNS (central nervous system). Benzodiazepines produce a relaxing, calming effect and can even help promote sleep when taken at bedtime. Xanax is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/controlled-substances-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">controlled substance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is classified as a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-scheduling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule IV drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means it has some potential for abuse and dependence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"uses-of-buspirone-and-xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uses of buspirone and Xanax<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone and Xanax are commonly used in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">management of anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with Xanax providing faster (acute) relief and buspirone typically used for long-term relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax is also used to treat panic disorder, or panic attacks, with or without agoraphobia (fear of crowded places, or fear of leaving the home).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone and Xanax are both FDA approved for use in adults. Some healthcare providers may prescribe one of these drugs in older children or adolescents for anxiety. However, this is considered an off-label (non-FDA-approved) use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-buspirone-or-xanax-more-effective\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is buspirone or Xanax more effective?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a study comparing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF03259411\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buspirone and Xanax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both drugs were found to be equally effective in treating symptoms of anxiety. Buspirone was found to have fewer side effects and fewer withdrawal symptoms than Xanax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/BF03259556\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the effect on daytime sleepiness between buspirone versus Xanax, versus Valium (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diazepam-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The study found buspirone to cause the least drowsiness of the three drugs. By the end of the first week of treatment, the difference between the drugs in terms of daytime sleepiness was not significant, but people who took Xanax or Valium had slower reaction times on a visual reaction timed performance test. The authors concluded that although the drugs are similarly effective, buspirone may be better in patients where daytime alertness is critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK531477\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StatPearls<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of the considerations between the two drugs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax is a controlled substance with the potential for dependence, as well as withdrawal when you stop taking it, whereas buspirone is not a controlled substance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone is as effective as benzodiazepines, like Xanax, for generalized anxiety disorder. But buspirone takes a few weeks to work and is not effective for the acute treatment of anxiety, whereas Xanax works quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, people respond differently to different medications. Grapefruit interacts with these medications and may cause the medicine to build up in your body, increasing the risk for serious side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While taking buspirone or Xanax, you should avoid alcohol. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects and impairment and can cause slowed breathing, severe sedation, loss of consciousness, and coma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before taking buspirone or Xanax, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone should not be taken within 14 days of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monoamine oxidase inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MAOI). The combination can lead to a dangerous increase in blood pressure, or a condition called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a life-threatening condition and medical emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax comes with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boxed warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the strongest warning required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Xanax (or any medicine in the benzodiazepine class of drugs) should not be taken with opioid painkillers because of the risk of extreme sedation, severe respiratory depression, coma, and death. If the combination of a benzodiazepine and opioid cannot be avoided, the patient should be prescribed the lowest dose for the shortest period of time and be closely monitored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The warning also states that benzodiazepines like Xanax have the potential for abuse and can cause overdose or death. Patients will be assessed for the risk of abuse before taking Xanax and will be closely monitored while taking Xanax. Additionally, the warning notes that because benzodiazepines can cause physical dependence, they should never be abruptly stopped.
