But can you combine the two? Is it okay to head to Zumba, sweat a few miles out on the treadmill, or lift weights after your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? What about when you\u2019re receiving the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prevnar-13-vs-pneumovax-23\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumococcal vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or, really, any vaccine at all?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-i-work-out-after-a-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I work out after a vaccine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical experts say exercise after vaccines is fine, as long as you\u2019re feeling up to it. In fact, according to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain, Behavior, and Immunity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, engaging in light aerobic exercise after a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or seasonal influenza vaccine\u2014such as walking or bicycling\u2014can actually improve the body\u2019s immune response by increasing antibody activation. Participants who began exercising at 60-70% heart rate within 30 minutes of vaccination for 90 minutes experienced a more enhanced immune response than both a sedentary control group and a group who exercised at the same intensity for 45 minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no contraindication [a reason not to do something] to exercising on the day of or the days after you receive a vaccine,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vumc.org\/health-policy\/person\/william-schaffner-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Schaffner, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. \u201cBut be sensible and listen to your body. Some people respond to vaccines with fatigue, muscle aches, and sometimes a fever. The day you receive a vaccine may not be the day to try and set a personal record.\u201d If you\u2019re up to it, stick with gentle exercise to help maximize the benefits of post-vaccine exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-exercise-after-vaccines-improve-immune-response\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can exercise after vaccines improve immune response?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If exercise doesn\u2019t hurt your immune response to a vaccine, can it actually help it? Though recently published information about exercising post-vaccination is promising, data from earlier research is mixed. The results can vary depending on the age and gender of study subjects, which vaccines they get, and the type, duration, and timing of the exercise they performed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3456995\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at healthy young adults found that those who performed 15 minutes of exercise with resistance bands prior to receiving the pneumococcal vaccine had an enhanced antibody response. But the response was only significant in those who received a half-dose of the vaccine, versus a full one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5911985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers of Immunology <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that a single bout of exercise can enhance the immune response to vaccinations in both young and older study subjects. And a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0268625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the University of Sydney and University of Birmingham suggest that performing moderate-intensity exercise (such as biking) or resistance exercise (such as weight lifting) immediately before or after getting an influenza vaccine may help activate the immune system\u2019s response to the vaccine. However, the benefits were more pronounced in older people than in younger people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExercise likely increases blood and lymphatic flow, which helps spread the immune cells that are produced post vaccination,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/physician-directory\/s\/shehab-ramsey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramsey Shehab, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a family practitioner and sports medicine specialist at Henry Ford Health Systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"exercise-after-covid-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise after COVID vaccines<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines help initiate immunity to a certain germ, such as a virus. Because they contain weakened or inactive parts of a virus or bacterium, vaccines trigger the immune system to create antibodies and T-cells\u2014two weapons the immune system uses to recognize and fight foreign invaders. The stronger your immune response to that vaccine, the better protection it offers. So if moderate exercise can boost vaccine efficacy, what\u2019s the best way to do it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16824730\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, women who exercised their deltoid (shoulder) and bicep (upper arm) muscles prior to receiving a flu vaccine had a better antibody response post-vaccination, while men had a better cell-mediated response (an immune response that involves disease-fighting T-cells, but not antibodies).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31580932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined a group of elite athletes and control subjects who were not athletes. Though each group received a flu vaccine and showed a good immune response to the virus post vaccination, those who exercised intensely and regularly (e.g., the elite athletes) had the most pronounced immune response. Those same <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/acsm-msse\/Fulltext\/2020\/07000\/Timing_of_Vaccination_after_Training__Immune.20.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">athletes were studied further<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Regardless of when they received their vaccine\u2014either two hours post training or after one day of rest\u2014their immune response (and the number and severity of the side effects they reported) was not significantly different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most recent research suggests that it\u2019s safe to exercise after a COVID-19 jab\u2013in fact, it\u2019s recommended. That\u2019s because long-duration cardiovascular exercise like a light jog, brisk walk, or a bike ride can increase your immune response to the COVID-19 or flu vaccine. But when it comes to strenuous physical activity, like weight-lifting or jumping rope, the jury\u2019s still out. And larger-scale studies are needed to determine if similar effects\u2014from say, a 90-minute walk or stationary bike ride\u2014are applicable after a second shot, or COVID-19 booster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe sensible, not obsessive,\u201d Dr. Schaffner recommends. \u201cI encourage exercise to the degree that you can, just because it\u2019s generally a good thing to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"covid-vaccine-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID vaccine side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.cdc.gov\/#\/details?url=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/expect\/after.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the COVID-19 vaccine are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling and pain at the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/headache-after-covid-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most side effects of the vaccine last one to three days and are likely to be more pronounced after receiving your second dose of the vaccine (although more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mskcc.org\/coronavirus\/second-dose-covid-19-vaccine-side-effects-why-they-happen-how-treat-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of people in the vaccine clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t have any side effects).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects are rare. A medical professional will observe you for 15-30 minutes immediately after receiving your COVID-19 vaccine to make sure you don\u2019t have a severe allergic reaction to the shot. While the numbers are few, cases of severe symptoms such as myocarditis (an inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (an inflammation of the outer lining of the heart) have been reported with COVID-19 vaccination, mostly among young men. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a very small number [who get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 vaccine-related myocarditis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">], but using some caution post covid vaccination in young people may be warranted,\u201d Dr. Shehab says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines affect different people differently, and the COVID-19 vaccine is no exception. While there\u2019s no reason you can\u2019t exercise after COVID vaccines, you may not feel like it. Though there aren\u2019t known risks associated with exercising after a COVID-19 vaccine, feeling lousy will make it tougher to exercise<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re experiencing symptoms like fatigue, muscle aches, fever, nausea, or chills, it\u2019s probably a good idea to take it easy and allow yourself to recover.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-vaccine-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for vaccine side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most side effects from vaccines\u2014headache, muscle\/joint pain, tiredness, fever, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/arm-pain-after-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain where the injection was given<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are mild and short lived. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare (occurring in about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/immunization\/basics\/safety\/side-effects\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one to two people per 1 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who receive vaccines). But get immediate medical attention if you\u2019re having any of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of your face or throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness\/weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash or hives on your body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of physical activity are numerous. Moderate-intensity exercise may provide an extra immune boost that results in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2803113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of contracting colds and upper respiratory infections. And staying active may be protective against severe COVID-19 outcomes. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/content\/55\/19\/1099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 48,440 Californians who developed COVID-19, those who exercised regularly were 50% less likely to require hospitalization than those who were inactive. But in the end, don\u2019t forgo a vaccination because you think it might affect your workout schedule or your physical performance. What\u2019s more, overdoing it with too much vigorous exercise can actually suppress your immune system. And that\u2019s a bad thing, because it puts you at increased risk of getting sick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remember that healthy, active people get sick, too. \u201cJust because you may be young, healthy, and physically fit does not mean a virus like COVID cannot make you seriously sick,\u201d Dr. Shaffner says. \u201cWe see it every year with the flu and now we\u2019re seeing it with COVID\u2014young, strong people being brought into the hospital and the intensive care unit [with these viruses]. Just being healthy is not enough to ward off a virus.\u201d The bottom line?
