Both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are made by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are approved by the U.S. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are injectable diabetes drugs but are not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The researchers found that both drugs led to significant weight loss, with Ozempic showing higher success rates than Victoza. The medications were generally well-tolerated, with most side effects being mild to moderate, making them effective options for weight management in this population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2019 review of studies was published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/landia\/article\/PIIS2213-8587(19)30249-9\/fulltext\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lancet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This study looked at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other drugs in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agonist class. The study found that all of the drugs lowered the risk of heart problems, kidney problems, and death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6245208\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consensus report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes recommends a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agonist as an option for people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is unknown whether there is an increased risk of thyroid cancer in humans who take Ozempic or Victoza. Patients with a history or family history of thyroid cancer, or with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple endocrine neoplasia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> syndrome Type 2 (MEN 2) should not take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, anyone who takes Ozempic or Victoza should call their healthcare professional right away if they have signs or symptoms of thyroid cancer such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, or a lump in the neck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other warnings include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may occur. Patients should be carefully monitored for signs and symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which may include severe, persistent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abdominal pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which may radiate to the back), and may be accompanied by vomiting. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is suspected, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be stopped and the patient should seek medical care. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is confirmed, the drug should not be started again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pens should never be shared between patients, even if the needle is changed. This is due to an increased risk for transmission of blood-borne pathogens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may occur, and is more likely when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken with insulin or certain other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A dose adjustment may be required. Patients should talk to their physician about low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> monitoring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a prescription for glucagon. Glucagon can be used in an emergency low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute kidney injury or worsening of kidney failure may occur, which may require dialysis. Symptoms of kidney problems can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and\/or dehydration.
