The original post has been preserved for informational purposes only.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two medications used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroesophageal reflux disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly referred to as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gerd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid reflux<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) occurs when your stomach contents come back up into the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esophagus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When this occurs regularly over a long period of time, this is known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When untreated or inadequately treated, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lead to serious complications such as esophagitis, esophageal stricture, and Barrett\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esophagus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Uncontrolled <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also lead to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abdominal pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, asthmatic symptoms, voice hoarseness, laryngitis, and dental decay. It is estimated that about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/digestive-diseases\/acid-reflux-ger-gerd-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffer from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some risk factors for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include being overweight, being a smoker, or being pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a variety of treatment options available for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across multiple classes of medications. There are short-term, fast-acting relief options available without a prescription such as Tums or Maalox for occasional or breakthrough <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid reflux<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom relief<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were formerly prescription-only options for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GERD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but are now available without a prescription as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"drug-overview-differences\">What are the main differences between ranitidine vs. omeprazole<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a medication available <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by prescription for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux. It belongs to a class of drugs known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> type 2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs), and is sometimes better known by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zantac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> binds to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> receptors that are responsible for the release of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach acid secretion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This includes baseline secretions as well as those released in response to stimuli such as food. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">famotidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another H2RA, have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2889260\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">little effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, and therefore have fewer drug interactions than the third H2RA, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cimetidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available as an oral tablet or capsule. Solid oral dosage forms are available <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by prescription in strengths of 75mg and 150mg. There is a 300 mg dose that is prescription only. An injectable version of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available as well and is typically only used in medical facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omeprazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omeprazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a medication available <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by prescription for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux. Almost 70% of patients treated with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced little to no symptoms after eight weeks of treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comparing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with respect to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflux esophagitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10383513\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comparison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these studies found <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be twice as effective at healing mucosal defects and lesions of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esophagus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The availability of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been plagued by large-scale, multi-manufacturer recalls withdrawing the prescription and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products due to the presence of a chemical known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31771343\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which has been linked to many types of cancer. It has been discovered that NDMA contamination can occur during manufacturing. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has determined that a very small amount of NDMA is acceptable, but many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products were found to have more than the acceptable amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the factors for overall safety and efficacy, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroenterology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specialist may choose to initiate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omeprazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> therapy over <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranitidine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for many indications.
