As you may know, there are two types of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes mellitus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (T1DM) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (T2DM). People with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are unable to produce insulin, a hormone needed to maintain blood sugar balance in their cells for energy. Type 2 diabetics are able to produce insulin, but their body doesn\u2019t respond to it appropriately. This allows <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get too high. Over 80 million Americans have prediabetes\u2014meaning they are at a very high risk of developing T2DM. The impact of uncontrolled diabetes can affect the health of your entire body. It can lead to heart disease, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower extremity amputation. For these reasons, having effective medication to help control blood sugar is imperative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two prescriptions, injectable insulins indicated in the treatment of T1DM and T2DM. Both medications are forms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin glargine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basal insulin analog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produced by the manufacturer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanofi-Aventis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Overall, these formulations offer the advantage of fewer injections daily while providing a relatively constant level of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glycemic control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While they are somewhat similar in composition, there are some differences between these two medications, and we will discuss those here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the main differences between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/toujeo-solostar\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin glargine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basal insulin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approved for use in both T1DM and T2DM. It is produced by a chemical modification of regular human insulin which ultimately allows for delayed onset of action and continuous release from the adipose tissue. The result is relative constant insulin levels with no major peaks or troughs in levels over up to 24 hours. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo Solostar pens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Max <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solostar pens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a concentration of 300 units\/ml. The advantage of these pens is that they only require a disposable pen needle to administer each dose. This eliminated the need for syringes. The difference between the two formulations is in the volume of the pen size, with the Max <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solostar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holding twice as much solution as the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solostar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Toujeo Max Solostar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/toujeo-max-solostar-without-insurance\/\">is also more expensive<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lantus-solostar\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin glargine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is also a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basal insulin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the first <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin glargine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and come to the U.S. market. It is available in a 100 unit\/ml solution and first came to the market in vials which required a separate needle and syringe. It now has a pen formulation as well known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus Solostar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6250621\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides more stable and long-lasting insulin levels as compared to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This leads to better and more consistent blood <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucose control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This type of long-term control is best measured by a value known as hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Patients on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a lower HbA1c measurement indicating better long-term control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin glargine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was designed to be a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basal insulin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could be given once daily, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16911626\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been shown to provide better <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucose control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when given twice daily. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been shown to provide better control and has decreased the need for rapid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin dosing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when given twice daily instead of just once daily. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is effective at once-daily dosing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was compared to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-acting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> insulins in an analysis known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30767173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIGHTENING study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toujeo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lantus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have each been shown to be effective at lowering blood sugar, but the concern amongst <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the risk for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe hypoglycemia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
