You may have even had a booster shot. But the more you hear about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/new-covid-strain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omicron and even newer variants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of COVID, you start to wonder if you need another shot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booster shots are nothing new. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/viral-vaccines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other vaccinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as HPV, require boosters because your immunity against these severe illnesses can start to decline with time, which puts you at an increased risk of actually catching that illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to coronavirus vaccinations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to monitor the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines in protecting against COVID. Here are some of the most important things to know about the COVID-19 vaccine booster and how you can determine if you can benefit from a vaccine booster shot.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I get a COVID booster shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/do-i-qualify-covid-19-vaccine-booster-and-which-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FDA) for all individuals older than 5 who have received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vacc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer-BioNTech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccine and all individuals older than 6 who have received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccine. Mixing and matching booster shots has been authorized, which gives individuals more flexibility in choosing their booster shot. Meaning, if you had the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/janssen-covid-19-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vaccine, you can get the Moderna or Pfizer booster for your second shot. Or, if you had the Pfizer vaccine, you can get the Moderna booster for your third shot. And if you received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/novavax-covid-19-vaccine-adjuvanted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novavax primary vaccine series<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can get either the Moderna or Pfizer boosters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 virus continues to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/covid-19-bivalent-vaccine-boosters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into new variants over time. In the fall of 2022, updated bivalent boosters from Pfizer and Moderna became available to individuals older than 5. The new bivalent boosters protect against a strain of the original virus as well as a strain of the Omicron variant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When can I get a COVID booster shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most adults and children, a primary vaccine series is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (usually two doses of Moderna or two doses of Pfizer). In children aged 6 months to 4 years, the primary Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine series consists of three doses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC recommends that all individuals older than 5 receive an updated bivalent vaccine if it\u2019s been at least 2 months since their primary vaccine series (with or without an original monovalent booster vaccination). The manufacturer of your previous vaccinations doesn\u2019t matter\u2014you can get either the Pfizer or Moderna bivalent booster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guidance continues to change as understanding of the virus changes and new variants, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/variants\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omicron BA.2, BA.4 and BA.5 variants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerge. \u201cAt this time, we recommend frequently checking the CDC\u2019s website to stay up-to-date on booster guidelines,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/columbiaallergy.com\/team\/sanjeev-jain-md-phd-facaai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanjeev Jain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified allergist and immunologist at Columbia Allergy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I get the booster shot after having COVID?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should get a COVID vaccine series and bivalent booster even if you\u2019ve already had COVID-19. The shots provide extra protection because natural immunity wanes over time. If you currently have COVID-19, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/interim-considerations-us.html#covid19-vaccination-sarscov2-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waiting 3 months after the start of symptoms or receiving a positive test to get the bivalent booster; this is believed to maximize the vaccine\u2019s effectiveness. If you have received monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma for COVID-19, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/covid-19\/clinical-considerations\/interim-considerations-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updated CDC guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report that you do not have to wait to get vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do I need a booster shot for COVID?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of Nov. 30, 2022, over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations_vacc-total-admin-rate-total\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">267 million Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have received a primary COVID-19 vaccine series. Of those fully vaccinated, around 40 million people have received a bivalent booster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Like all vaccines, the efficacy of the COVID vaccine lessens over time, and research is still underway to understand what the decrease looks like for COVID specifically,&#8221; explains Beth Beatriz, Ph.D., epidemiologist and public health expert at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parentingpod.com\/author\/bbeatriz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parentingpod.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This vaccine isn&#8217;t the same as a light switch, where one day it works, and the next it doesn&#8217;t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long after a COVID booster shot are you protected?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long the COVID-19 vaccine works depends on several factors, including how much of the virus you&#8217;re exposed to and your own immune response. That said, around three months after vaccination, there appears to be a decline in the COVID vaccine\u2019s effectiveness, from about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/70\/wr\/mm7037a7.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">92% to 75%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the health officials at the CDC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I want to emphasize here that even at 75% effectiveness, the COVID vaccines are still highly effective in reducing serious illness and death,&#8221; says Beatriz. Still, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.contagionlive.com\/view\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine-remains-effective-shows-waning-immunity-several-months-after\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Moderna have been able to look at those who were vaccinated more than a year ago versus within the past eight months. If you were recently vaccinated, you may be less likely to get COVID than those who were vaccinated more than a year ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jain agrees: &#8220;Pfizer, Johnson &amp; Johnson, and Moderna are all tracking data in regard to the longevity of the immune response and antibodies produced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/compare-covid-vaccines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from these vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Researchers are continuing to monitor vaccinated individuals for a decrease in COVID antibodies to determine if or when a booster is needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially true when it comes to the appearance of new variants. At a minimum, Dr. Jain says, a booster should give you good immunity against the virus for at least six months, as the original vaccines did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, different factors may improve how well the vaccine works, such as exercise. According to new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0889159122000319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, engaging in moderate exercise such as walking for 90 minutes after receiving your COVID-19 vaccination or booster may improve the vaccine\u2019s efficacy by increasing antibody response\u2014without worsening side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/human-coronavirus-myths\/\"><b>14 COVID myths\u2014and the facts<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the common COVID vaccine booster shot side effects?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the most part, you can expect similar side effects to the booster that you might have experienced from your first vaccine doses. These can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/arm-pain-after-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection site discomfort, redness, and swelling<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/headache-after-covid-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the lymph nodes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The main difference in side effects between the original vaccine and the booster was that more participants noted lymph node swelling in the underarm on the side the vaccine was administered,\u201d Dr. Jain explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be a normal response of your immune system and is generally not a concern. In fact, it can be a sign your body is mounting a defense against illness. Reports have shown that Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are linked to more underarm swelling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsna.org\/doi\/full\/10.1148\/rycan.2021210038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than with other vaccinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s possibly due to the fact that these are mRNA vaccines, which are a relatively new type of vaccine that may be stimulating a higher immune response than other types of vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as the updated bivalent vaccine side effects are concerned, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2022.11.07.22281982v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preliminary studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that the severity of side effects with the bivalent vaccine is greater than the severity of those with the monovalent vaccine. In a small study of 76 healthcare workers, more subjects who received the bivalent vaccine reported an inability to work than those who received the monovalent vaccine. However, there have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-moderna-pfizer-biontech-bivalent-covid-19-vaccines-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no unique side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that you haven\u2019t already seen before with the original monovalent vaccine. Although the bivalent vaccine now targets more than one strain of COVID-19, the side effects of the bivalent and monovalent vaccine should be the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where can I get a COVID booster shot?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can get a COVID booster shot at most major pharmacies or your healthcare provider\u2019s office. Go to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccines.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find a location near you. As with the original vaccines, COVID-19 boosters are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/08\/18\/press-briefing-by-white-house-covid-19-response-team-and-public-health-officials-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free of cost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regardless of your insurance or immigration status, according to a White House press briefing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some things to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/prepare-for-vaccination.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep in mind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when getting your booster:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you bring your CDC-issued <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-store-vaccine-card\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 Vaccination Record card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to your appointment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not known if taking over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications, such as Tylenol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Advil (ibuprofen), or aspirin will affect your booster shot.
