Pharyngitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the pharynx in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back of the throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pharyngitis is considered an upper respiratory infection (URI). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/strep-throat-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strep throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sore-throat-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are differentiated by their route cause which can be determined by a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throat culture<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are symptoms common between the two types of pharyngitis including pain, swelling, and irritation. There are also some really important differences that determine how each can be successfully treated. It is possible, but rare, for it to spread by contaminated food. For most, the time from exposure to the first symptom is two to five days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sore-throat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a type of acute pharyngitis typically caused by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">viral infections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like those that cause the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common cold<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and flu. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial infection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are other potential <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes of sore throats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also result from allergies or exposure to pollutants such as smoke. Transmission likelihood depends on the source. The rates of infection are highest in winter and early spring. Infection is more likely in school-age children (5 to 15 years of age) who attend crowded schools and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daycares<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Of all episodes of pharyngitis, GAS is responsible for 15%-30% of the cases in children, and 5%-15% of cases in adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incidence is harder to track as it can be caused by many things and may not be diagnosed by any lab or reported to any health officials. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is pharyngitis caused by viral or other irritations. Upon clinical exam, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider will check to see if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tonsils<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are red or swollen. This can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty swallowing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Typically, there will be small, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white patches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back of the throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as exudates. Small red spots may also be visible on the palate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also makes it difficult to swallow. The throat typically feels dry or scratchy and may lead to hoarseness in the voice. The distinguishing factors for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by a virus or allergies tend to be a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">runny nose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cough, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Before testing for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urgent care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider will perform an examination and screen out symptoms that are specific to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep infection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include fever, swollen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lymph nodes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the presence of white spots on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back of the throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If those are present, your doctor will likely test you to confirm a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strep throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is diagnosed by obtaining a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the back of your throat to test for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep bacteria<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used in a rapid antigen test, sometimes called a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid strep test<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 which provides results in minutes. Unfortunately, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid strep test<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a significant false-negative rate. If that rapid test is negative, but symptoms are present, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swab<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be sent to a laboratory for a more definitive culture test.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-15\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of acute pharyngitis cases are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, otherwise referred to as viral pharyngitis. This is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by common viruses such as a cold or flu. There is no lab diagnosis for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The focus is on the lack of symptoms specific to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strep throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A patient with no fever, no swollen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lymph nodes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a lack of irritation of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tonsils<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or pharynx will be presumed to have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The presence of allergy symptoms and a history of smoking are also factors used in the distinction. There is no laboratory test to confirm a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most patients will be prescribed a ten-day course of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penicillin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Symptoms will begin to drastically improve within 48 hours of starting therapy. Patients with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penicillin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allergy may have alternatives like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or clindamycin prescribed. It is important that although treated patients will be relatively symptom-free very quickly, it is important to finish the full prescribed regimen. Antibiotic treatment decreases the duration of symptoms, reduces the likelihood of transmission to others, and prevents further complications from a streptococcal infection. For most patients, it is also acceptable to use anti-inflammatories like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or over-the-counter pain relievers like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to further alleviate fever and discomfort. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throat sprays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throat lozenges<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also provide temporary relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"heading-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by viruses, allergies, or pollutant exposure will typically resolve on their own within a week. Antibiotics are unnecessary, and even harmful, if used for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The use of antibiotics can lead to side effects as well as resistance in the future when you may need effective antibiotic therapy. There are ways to alleviate the discomfort.
