href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=487f8a62-e142-457c-97cc-2e398fde7594#S5.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many women with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon implant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience changes in their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstrual bleeding pattern<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including changes in intensity and their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstrual cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most common is spotting, but spotting typically improves in six to 12 months. For many women, however, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually makes periods lighter and, for some, eases both cramping and PMS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"weight-gain\">Nexplanon and weight gain<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=487f8a62-e142-457c-97cc-2e398fde7594#S5.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 13.7% of the women with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon implant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported weight gain. The average <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was nearly three pounds one year after implant and close to four pounds two years after implant. While it is widely believed that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal birth control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, scientists are not so sure. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD003987.pub5\/epdf\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cumulative evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to suggest that it doesn\u2019t, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00404-015-3784-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do show modest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contraceptive implants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"implant-problems\">Nexplanon and implant problems<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon implants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are always inserted by a physician in a doctor\u2019s office or clinic. Using a local <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anesthetic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a doctor inserts the implant just below the skin on the inside of the non-dominant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upper arm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A number of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems are complications due to insertions, migration, or removal of the implant. In very rare cases, the implant is not inserted (about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=487f8a62-e142-457c-97cc-2e398fde7594#S5.2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.01%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients) or only partially inserted (0.37%), raising the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. When inserted too deeply (0.9% incidence), the implant could cause complications such as nerve or blood vessel damage. Other severe problems at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implant site<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are possible, such as severe pain, numbness, tingling, or altered arm movement, but these are rare (0.67% incidence).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once inserted, an implant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexplanon.com\/side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can come out by itself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, break, bend, or migrate to other areas of the body. Some implants can get lost in the body and require X-rays and surgery to remove. Some have even been found in blood vessels. Other complications can occur during removal (1.3%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, severe complications are uncommon. More commonly, women could experience minor problems right after insertion or removal such as pain, bruising, rash, itching, infection, or scarring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If mild or moderate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are experienced, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will usually encourage the woman to keep the implant for another few months to see if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> improve. If severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are experienced or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are too unpleasant, the implant will be removed. Once removed, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etonogestrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels in the blood fall to undetectable levels in a week, so most temporary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as headache, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mood changes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and menstrual pattern changes will improve within a few days after removal. Serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ectopic pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will require emergency medical treatment. Some, such as severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could have lifelong complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Nexplanon contraindications &amp; warnings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause other problems because of pre-existing conditions or other issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not cause physical dependence, so there are no withdrawal symptoms when the implant is removed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has no risk for drug abuse or misuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overdose of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progestin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etonogestrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not produce serious problems. Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an implant, an overdose is highly unlikely. Bent or broken implants could release a slightly higher daily dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contraindications are pre-existing conditions that make a prescription drug too unsafe to take. For anyone with certain pre-existing conditions, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not be inserted. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/622003\/Nexplanon\/Contradindications-Cautions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy (or suspected pregnancy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood clot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-dependent cancer or history of progestin-dependent cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or liver tumors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained vaginal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etonogestrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or any of the inactive ingredients in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other pre-existing conditions may cause problems, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> still can be used provided precautions are taken. However, although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal birth control options<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used in women with these conditions, having too many of these risk factors can be a contraindication. These include:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>High blood pressure<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etonogestrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can raise blood pressure, so women with hypertension will need regular blood pressure monitoring after insertion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>High fat or cholesterol levels: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progestins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=487f8a62-e142-457c-97cc-2e398fde7594#S5.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase LDL levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so women with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> insert will need regular blood tests to ensure LDL is under control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Etonogestrel<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause slight increases in blood sugar, so women with diabetes or prediabetes will need regular blood glucose monitoring.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fluid retention: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control drugs usually cause some amount of fluid retention, so people with conditions that could be worsened by fluid retention require very careful monitoring.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Family history of <\/b><b>breast cancer<\/b><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are sensitive to female hormones, that is, they depend on female hormones to grow. Women who have a family history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are advised to be cautious about taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal birth control<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Excess weight: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=487f8a62-e142-457c-97cc-2e398fde7594#S5.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has not been tested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women whose weight is 130% greater than ideal body weight.
