It\u2019s responsible for a man\u2019s sexual development (e.g., the growth of his testes and penis) and his sexual function (including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-libido-caused-by-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex drive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sperm production). It also helps give men their characteristic male traits\u2014things like facial hair, a deepened voice, and increased muscle mass. Women also naturally produce testosterone, but at levels significantly lower than men\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low testosterone (also called hypogonadism or low T) affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15603-low-testosterone-male-hypogonadism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of men age 45 and older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Cleveland Clinic. That can spell trouble for men\u2019s physical and mental well-being. It can cause weight gain, fatigue, bone loss, depression, and even cardiovascular problems like heart attack and stroke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"normaltestosteronelevels\">Normal testosterone levels<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal testosterone levels range between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.org\/media\/press-releases\/2015\/morton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300-1,000 ng\/dL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nanograms per deciliter of blood). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a lot of factors\u2014a man\u2019s weight, the time of day blood samples are tested, and even the lab itself performing the testing\u2014can influence his testosterone levels (sometimes referred to colloquially as T levels). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another big factor is age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know the exact \u2018normal\u2019 based on age ranges,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/staff\/26516-petar-bajic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petar Bajic, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor of urology at Case Western Reserve University and a spokesperson for the American Urological Association. \u201cIn general, though, the professional societies for urology and endocrinology\u2014the two types of doctors who manage low testosterone\u2014have agreed on a universal cutoff of 300 ng\/dL as the threshold for \u2018low.\u2019 However, we know that younger men have a higher \u2018normal\u2019 testosterone than older men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4190174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PLoS One<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finds that total testosterone in males is low before puberty, rises at about age 11, and peaks in the late teen years. Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandheartlab.com\/tests\/testosterone-free-bioavailable-and-total-males-adult-immunoassay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, says testosterone peaks around age 30 to 40 before it starts to steadily decline\u2014at about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(17)30824-8\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% to 2% annually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t fully understand why testosterone decreases with age,\u201d Dr. Bajic says. \u201cThere are likely to be many different components\u2014some genetic, some environmental, and others inherent to aging. Experts are still researching the connection between testosterone and heart health. They do know that men with low (and extremely high) levels are more at risk to have heart attacks and stroke. However, when symptomatic men with lab-confirmed low testosterone receive testosterone therapy, their risk of cardiovascular events decreases. In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/796591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, men under 55 with symptomatic low testosterone levels had a 25% reduced risk of heart attack and stroke when they received adequate testosterone therapy. Men over 60 had a 15% lower risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A too-low or too-high testosterone level is not favorable,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roboticcancersurgery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S. Adam Ramin, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a urologist and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles. \u201cA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd studies have shown that mid-range levels are cardio-protective, meaning they can help guard the heart from potential damage.\u201d The goal is to replace testosterone so that it is within the normal range. Some men desire testosterone replacement when their levels are within the normal range to help with symptoms of hypogonadism. This is harmful to the patient and has not been significantly shown to help with symptoms. If the testosterone is within the normal range, then the physician should look for alternate diagnoses for why the patient is symptomatic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"remedies\">How to increase testosterone naturally<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making healthy lifestyle changes and eating a healthy diet can do a lot to boost testosterone levels, help you feel better, and improve your overall health. Some natural ways to raise lower testosterone levels include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Lose weight<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWeight loss is essential because fat cells in the body convert testosterone into estrogen,\u201d Dr. Bajic explains. \u201cLosing weight can prevent this conversion and increase testosterone levels naturally. However, not all men with low T are overweight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4154787\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that over 50% of obese men have lab-proven hypogonadism, which is when testosterone levels below 300 \u200ang\/dL. Confirming this, one study of obese men who underwent weight loss surgery found that within one year of their procedure, their testosterone rose from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4154787\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-surgery average of 295 ng\/dL to 423 ng\/dL post surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to lose weight, talk to your healthcare provider about the best plan for you. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31393814\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that low-fat diets can actually lower testosterone. Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides its ability to help you lose weight, exercise has also been shown to boost testosterone. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/nsca-jscr\/Fulltext\/2020\/07000\/Effects_of_Training_With_Free_Weights_Versus.6.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that compared both men and women who either lifted free weights or used weight machines for a total of eight weeks, the men who used the free weights had a greater increase in what\u2019s known as \u201cfree testosterone\u201d (testosterone that isn\u2019t bound to proteins and can connect to testosterone receptors in the cells) than the men who used the weight machines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while weight lifting and strength training are what most people think about when they envision exercise that will build muscle and raise testosterone, other physical activity\u2014including walking and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5510446\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-intensity interval training (HIIT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also proven effective. For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12020-021-02631-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study that examined men\u2019s daily step counts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their testosterone levels found that those who took more than 4,000 steps a day had significantly lower odds of having low total testosterone levels than those who took fewer steps. What\u2019s more, for each additional 1,000 steps the men took, total testosterone levels increased by 7\u2009ng\/dL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Get adequate sleep<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone levels increase as you sleep, which may explain why men who are chronically sleep deprived can have lower levels of testosterone. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4445839\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined the testosterone levels in young, healthy men after they slept eight to 10 hours for a series of nights and then restricted sleep to five hours per night for eight nights. Overall, the men\u2019s testosterone levels decreased 10%-15% after the eight days of restricted sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnything that negatively affects sleep, such as shift work, sleep apnea, or stress, will negatively affect testosterone production,\u201d Dr. Bajic says. \u201cShoot for eight hours of sleep per night and exercise <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good sleep hygiene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d If you have a sleep disorder such as snoring or sleep apnea, see your physician for confirmation and possible treatment with CPAP. CPAP is a device that you wear on your face at night that can help you breathe and sleep better. Sleeping better also helps energize you during the day so that weight loss is easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Live clean<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance abuse is an important cause of low testosterone levels. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6571549\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that low testosterone can result from things like chronic alcohol abuse (but not low-to-moderate alcohol intake) and opioid use. Other substances, such as cigarette and marijuana smoking, can also negatively affect testicular tissue and sperm health\u2014although not testosterone production, per se.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Getting more vitamin D and zinc<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21154195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, subjects who received vitamin D supplementation showed significant increases in testosterone compared to those in the control group. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familydoctor.org\/ways-increase-low-testosterone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Family Physicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that men with low testosterone get 600 IUs (international units) of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> daily and also 11 milligrams of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zinc\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zinc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another testosterone-boosting mineral, per day. You can opt to eat more foods rich in zinc, which includes meat, poultry, shellfish, whole grains, beans, and nuts or take a zinc supplement. Both vitamin D and zinc supplements are available over the counter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"boosters\">Testosterone boosters: Which supplements are effective?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judging by the selection on health food store shelves, testosterone boosters (or T-boosters) are a big business. You should know there\u2019s little scientific evidence that any of them raise testosterone levels. T-boosters are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which means there\u2019s no oversight of what they\u2019re composed of (and some may include banned substances or steroids) or what they claim to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsm.jsexmed.org\/article\/S1743-6095(18)31382-1\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at five T-boosters found on Amazon. Researchers performed a literature search looking at the effectiveness of the 10 most common ingredients used across all five supplements. Only 19% of those studies were even conducted in humans. Of those, 30% showed an increase in testosterone levels, 3% a decrease, 46% no effect, and 22% were indeterminate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI generally recommend that men avoid testosterone-boosting supplements as some of these might contain substances whose effects on hormonal function we do not fully understand,\u201d Dr. Bajic cautions. \u201cIf a man has low testosterone with associated symptoms, he should see an experienced physician to discuss the various available treatment options, which are very effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whentoseedoctor\">When to see a doctor for low T<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-testosterone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of low testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, see your doctor. You can see a urologist, endocrinologist, family physician, or internist for help. Your healthcare provider will take a health history and, if symptoms point to low testosterone, order a blood test for a definitive diagnosis. Several blood draws may be needed, as testosterone levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day. Physicians generally don\u2019t treat low testosterone unless you are symptomatic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blood test results confirm low levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs men age, it can be typical for their testosterone levels to drop,\u201d assures Dr. Ramin. \u201cThis drop does not necessarily indicate there is a problem, especially if the man is not experiencing any related symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-age\/\"><b>Should you expect erectile dysfunction at a certain age?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"medications\">Low T medications to try when natural remedies don\u2019t work<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t been able to normalize low testosterone with lifestyle measures, your doctor may recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-testosterone-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone replacement therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These medications work in different ways. Testosterone replacement is available to place topically on the skin, pellets placed under the skin, injected in the muscle, or orally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTreatment is usually advisable if the low testosterone levels are causing symptoms or if the levels are so low that the individual is at risk of physiologic complications like cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis,\u201d says Dr. Ramin.
