The trapped sebum forms annoying bumps, which can even start to itch. Sweating at the gym definitely plays a part in acne breakouts, though ironically exercise can also help reduce these outbreaks\u2014as long as you practice proper skincare routine and hygiene, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drpauljarrodfrank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Jarrod Frank,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, a celebrity cosmetic dermatologist in NYC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what you need to know about the relationship between sweat and acne, and how you can avoid these blemishes altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does sweat cause acne?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working out creates stronger muscles, increased flexibility, and better mood, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-after-exercise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among other benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, most exercise routines make you sweat\u2014and sweat can cause acne if it remains on the skin too long. When your heart rate goes up, sweating helps to cool you down. Sweat glands open pores, allowing them to \u201cbreathe,\u201d and flush out oil. As you cool off, sweat, makeup, and bacteria can get trapped in your skin as pores close. The result? Clogged pores and inflammatory acne. In addition, sweat changes the pH balance of skin, creating the perfect environment for acne-causing bacteria to build up and cause zits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis type of acne is not going to be the blackhead or whitehead type, which is a different mechanism of action or process, but it\u2019s going to be more the pink inflammatory kind,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optiskinmedical.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orit Markowitz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of OptiSkin in New York City. It often has the same appearance as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/summer-breakout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maskne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is also caused by trapped sweat. Other types of tight clothing like sweatbands and hats can worsen acne, too, because they keep the bacteria in place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does working out help acne?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a true health conundrum, working out does help acne, even though sweat, a result of working out, causes acne\u2014especially if you have acne-prone skin. So what\u2019s a gym buff to do? First, don\u2019t stop exercising. It decreases stress and inflammation. These effects can improve skin problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnything that causes your body to feel good, such as diet, exercise, decreased stress\u2014and sometimes we know that exercise actually leads to a decrease in stress\u2014that&#8217;s going to improve any disease that your body has, such as acne,\u201d Dr. Markowitz says. It\u2019s just crucial to remove sweat immediately after your workout. Otherwise, it can have the opposite effect: \u201cIt can backfire and increase acne,\u201d according to Dr. Markowitz.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you prevent acne after working out?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, you don\u2019t have to, and shouldn\u2019t, stop exercising to prevent acne. There are other, more effective ways to maintain your skin\u2019s health. Use these tips to prevent breakouts due to sweat:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Shower right after your workout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Use a mild soap, to eliminate excess bacteria on your face and body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells that could clog pores.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Wear loose-fitting clothing while exercising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to promote airflow and prevent bacteria buildup. That means no sweatbands or hats while working out\u2014especially if you have acne on your forehead. They can collect sweat and bacteria on skin. Wash exercise wear after every workout.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Use micellar water to rinse your face after working out<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is available over the counter and contains cleansing oil molecules, such as glycerin, which have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/summer-breakout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proven health benefits for skin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Try OTC body wash and face cleansers\u00a0 containing 2% <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/salicylic-acid\/what-is\"><b>salicylic acid<\/b><\/a><b>, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) after working out<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This helps decrease inflammation and unclog pores.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid pre-workout supplements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contain chemicals like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/creatinine-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creatine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and caffeine, Dr. Frank says. These can dehydrate your skin and increase acne.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Moisturize with an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with sunscreen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-sunscreen-expire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(SPF 30 or higher)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoid using heavy lotions or oil-based creams on your face and body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These can worsen skin clogging and lead to acne.
