The thyroid is a gland in your dog\u2019s neck that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/thyroid-disease-in-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secretes hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as thyroxine (T4), that are important for metabolism and other significant body functions. Hypothyroidism occurs when your dog\u2019s thyroid does not make enough of these hormones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is hypothyroidism?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism in dogs means that your pup\u2019s thyroid gland is not secreting enough hormones to support your dog\u2019s metabolism. This causes problems with multiple systems in your dog\u2019s body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism is more common in dogs than in other domesticated animals. While it can occur at any age and in any breed, it is more common in middle-aged dogs (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/pet-talk\/hypothyroidism-in-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about four to six years old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and in medium to large dog breeds, particularly the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English setter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden retriever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irish setter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doberman pinscher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dachshund<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miniature schnauzer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boxer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poodle<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost cases of hypothyroidism are what\u2019s called idiopathic, a fancy word for we just don\u2019t know what caused it,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/petkeen.com\/veterinarians-dr-chyrle-bonk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chyrle Bonk, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a remote veterinary consultant for petkeen.com.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other causes of hypothyroidism in dogs<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/canine-hypothyroidism-diagnosis-and-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune-mediated lymphocytic thyroiditis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congenital defects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired thyroid stimulating hormone secretion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tumors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These lead to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/animal-veterinary\/animal-health-literacy\/hypothyroidism-dogs-there-are-fda-approved-drugs-treat-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation or shrinkage of the thyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which causes dysfunction in hormone excretion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dog may have low thyroid hormone levels, but not have hypothyroidism. Factors that can cause a dog\u2019s thyroid levels to test low<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morrisanimalfoundation.org\/article\/science-101-hypothyroidism-in-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concurrent illnesses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of hypothyroidism in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism in dogs affects all of their organ systems, but primarily their metabolism. Symptoms can vary from dog to dog, and may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain or obesity, without eating more\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced activity levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental dullness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold intolerance, or heat seeking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in coat and skin, such as increased shedding, hair thinning, hair loss, infections, or bad smell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thickening of the skin, particularly in areas of friction, such as the armpit, groin, or around the face and head<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproductive problems in dogs who are not spayed or neutered<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol (about 75% of dogs with hypothyroidism have elevated cholesterol levels)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog is showing signs of hypothyroidism, it\u2019s important to take them to be evaluated by a vet. If your dog does have hypothyroidism, medication can make a big difference to quality of life. While treatment for hypothyroidism is lifelong, most dogs respond well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf it isn\u2019t managed properly it can decrease their quality of life,\u201d says Dr. Bonk. \u201cJust imagine if you felt tired all of the time or had to carry around excess weight that you just couldn\u2019t get rid of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat hypothyroidism in dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypothyroidism in dogs is treated with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/where-to-fill-pet-prescriptions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> containing<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levothyroxine-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levothyroxine sodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile the thyroid supplement that is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypothyroidism-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribed for people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is safe to use in dogs, the dosage that a dog would receive is very different from that which a human is prescribed,\u201d says Theresa W. Fossum, DVM, Ph.D., founder of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/drfossums.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Fossum\u2019s Pet Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cYour veterinarian will tailor the dose for your dog based on the blood levels of thyroxine that your dog has.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage also depends on the dog\u2019s weight. Your vet will determine the best medication schedule, but generally thyroid medications are given by mouth either once or twice a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may take some adjustments to find the right dosage at first, and dosage is likely to need adjusting over the course of the dog\u2019s life, even once a treatment routine is in place. Dogs should have their thyroid levels retested once or twice a year to make sure the treatment is still working well. Dogs usually respond well to treatment, with noticeable signs of improvement within a month or two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of the medication are possible. Check in with your vet if your dog experiences:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite\/not eating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin problems (such as red, inflamed skin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in activity level (decreased or increased)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased drinking and urinating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation or behavior issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden or unexplained weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHypothyroidism isn\u2019t usually life threatening, especially with proper treatment and monitoring,\u201d Dr. Bonk says. Still, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to worsening symptoms and the dog feeling unwell.
