Sucralfate side effects were mild and rarely led to discontinuation of the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"constipation-is-the-most-common-side-effect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation is the most common side effect<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation was the most common side effect, reported by only 2% of patients, according to the FDA. If symptoms persist or are bothersome, let your provider know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects-of-sucralfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of sucralfate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate has a few rare, but potentially serious side effects, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Signs of a severe allergic reaction (call 911):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Severe constipation or bowel blockage:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inability to pass stool or gas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Bezoar formation (rare):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a hard lump formed by undissolved medication particles, usually in the stomach. Symptoms can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>High blood sugar (oral suspension only):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The liquid form of sucralfate commonly contains sugar or sugar substitutes. Even if the amount of sugar per dose is relatively small, taking the medication three or four times daily every day can raise a person\u2019s blood sugar. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar closely and report unusual elevations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-sucralfate-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do sucralfate side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild effects like constipation often improve within days to weeks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious reactions require medical treatment.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call 911 immediately if you have signs of an allergic reaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bezoar formations may require removal during an upper endoscopy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate does not cause long-term side effects after stopping the medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-use-caution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should use caution?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several contraindications for taking sucralfate, including hypersensitivity to any of the medication&#8217;s components. The benefits of treatment may outweigh the risks in certain patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"difficulty-swallowing-dysphagia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate is contraindicated in patients with dysphagia without a known cause, a condition in which patients have difficulty swallowing. This is because sucralfate can form a mass in the esophagus if it isn&#8217;t completely dissolved before it reaches this area of the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, dysphagia caused by acid reflux is a condition often treated with sucralfate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"gi-obstruction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI obstruction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with known GI obstruction, an intestinal blockage, shouldn&#8217;t take sucralfate. This medication can bind to food and other medications, worsening the obstruction if the material cannot pass through the intestine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"renal-impairment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renal impairment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate is mainly excreted in the feces rather than through the kidneys. That said, this medication should be used with caution in patients who have known serious kidney disease, kidney failure, or who are on dialysis treatment, as it can lead to elevated aluminum levels in the blood.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"type-2-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate in suspension form can affect blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. The medication has been reported to induce high blood sugar in some diabetic patients due to sugar or sugar substitutes being added to the suspension form. The amount of antidiabetic medication you take may need to be adjusted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"aspiration-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspiration risk<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate can increase the risk of pneumonia and other pulmonary complications in patients who are at increased risk for aspiration. Some conditions may affect the way a patient swallows or even prevent them from swallowing. In these cases, sucralfate should not be taken.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use caution in those with a tracheostomy, recent intubation, history of aspiration, or difficulty swallowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"impaired-gag-reflex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired gag reflex<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain types of anesthesia, Parkinson&#8217;s disease, a history of stroke, or esophageal surgery may alter gag reflexes. Sucralfate is not recommended for patients with these conditions, as they are at increased risk of aspiration and bezoar formation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy-and-breastfeeding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate is safe to take during pregnancy if clearly needed, according to the drug label. It is not known to cause birth defects and should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Human studies show minimal drug absorption into the bloodstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most providers consider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501350\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sucralfate to be safe to use while breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since there is minimal drug absorption. While no human data is available, the medication poses a low risk to the infant when used during this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mothers may need additional fluids while taking sucralfate to prevent constipation, which may occur with its use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-take-sucralfate-with-other-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to take sucralfate with other medications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to take sucralfate on an empty stomach and separate it from other medications by at least two hours (before or after). Do not take antacids within 30 minutes of sucralfate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucralfate]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be separated from both other medications and also food, by at least one to two hours, making it quite difficult for some patients to incorporate it into their daily regimen,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gastrodoc1.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesse P. Always give your doctor and pharmacist a full list of everything you take.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tips-to-reduce-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips to reduce side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give your doctor a full list of your medical conditions and medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take sucralfate exactly as prescribed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it on an empty stomach at least two hours before or after a meal or medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not crush sucralfate tablets (unless directed otherwise). The main obstacle to patient adherence is the difficult schedule of administration. Sucralfate is typically given three and even four times daily. As you can imagine, taking any medication four times daily can be difficult. Combine that with the need to separate the medication from other prescription and OTC medications <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> food throughout the day, and you can see how patients may struggle with this schedule,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jesse-p-houghton-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesse P.
