The FDA later approved varenicline tartrate, the generic version, which is what is now widely available.\u00a0Although people still use the term &#8220;Chantix,&#8221; the brand-name drug isn&#8217;t currently available.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking cessation has an array of benefits, including reductions in cancer rates, lung disease, heart attack and stroke risk, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15710956\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-cause mortality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Succeeding with a quit attempt can be exceedingly difficult, but the unique smoking cessation medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chantix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (varenicline) can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23728690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than double the chance of success<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bupropion-hcl-er-smoking-det\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyban (bupropion)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicoderm-cq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicoderm CQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nicotine patches, are a couple of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/smoking-cessation-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternative options to help quit smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix attaches to nicotine receptors in the brain as a partial agonist, both reducing the craving for nicotine and blocking the pleasure of smoking. While it is enticing to double the chance of achieving the array of smoke-free health benefits, there are some side effects with Chantix which must be considered. This article will explore Chantix side effects and provide tips for avoiding them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-chantix-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of Chantix<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, appetite change, or abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flatulence, diarrhea, or constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth or taste disturbance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia, abnormal dreams, or sleep disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malaise, fatigue, or somnolence (sleepiness)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional disturbance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath or respiratory disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin rash<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common adverse reaction to Chantix is nausea, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27158893\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have estimated to occur in about 25% of individuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Typically, the nausea is mild, occurs within the first two weeks, and often resolves with time. Persistent or worsening nausea or if nausea is accompanied by vomiting, consult your prescriber for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"appetite-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appetite change<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest concerns amongst smokers who are considering quitting is that they will gain weight. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22782848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain after stopping smoking averages five to 10 pounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, individual experiences can vary considerably. In fact, about 20% of those who quit may lose weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the concern regarding weight gain, interest in whether Chantix mitigates or worsens this risk is natural. Chantix users may actually experience either an increase or decrease in appetite, but neither one occurs in more than 5% of users. Ultimately, Chantix<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22782848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not seem to significantly affect the chance of weight gain<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with smoking cessation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vivid-dreams\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivid dreams and nightmares<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25409105\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A variety of sleep-related disturbances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been described with Chantix. These disturbances can range from unusual dreams to trouble sleeping. Most commonly, abnormal dreams are experienced by about 10% of those taking the drug, and nightmares or sleep disorders are reported by another 1% to 3%. Small numbers of case reports have described sleepwalking that involved harmful activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep problems may also be an aspect of nicotine withdrawal after quitting smoking. Withdrawal symptoms after smoking cessation may also include cravings to smoke, increased appetite, sadness, irritability, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Chantix<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression or neuropsychiatric disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal behavior or thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homicidal thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity allergic reaction or angioedema (swelling of the face or body)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (includes blisters and peeling skin) or erythema multiforme<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrhythmia (heart rhythm problem), heart attack, stroke, or angina (chest discomfort)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photosensitivity (light sensitivity)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anemia or thrombocytopenia (low platelet or clotting cell count)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney stones or kidney failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypokalemia (low potassium level)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case reports of depressed mood and even suicidal thoughts and aggressive behavior came to light after the release of Chantix. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) responded by adding a black box warning on Chantix in 2009 about this risk. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27116918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A subsequent study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examined these potential concerns in detail and did not find an elevated risk of these adverse effects compared to other smoking cessation medications or even a placebo. The FDA removed the black box warning from Chantix in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cardiovascular-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2018\/021928s045_046lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labeling that warns about use by those with known cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The labeling arose due to some study data showing a small increased risk of life-threatening cardiovascular events with Chantix. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22563098\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analysis of multiple clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did not corroborate this concern, however, as rates of cardiovascular events were similar between those taking and not taking Chantix. Furthermore, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-drug-safety-communication-chantix-varenicline-may-increase-risk-certain-cardiovascular-adverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA has noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the benefits and risks of taking Chantix must be considered since smoking cessation is particularly improvement for those with cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Chantix side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duration of Chantix side effects can vary. Most side effects resolve when the medication is discontinued. In fact, immediate discontinuation is advised if one experiences mood changes while on Chantix. On the contrary, mild nausea may improve with time alone, even if Chantix is continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix is not habit-forming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the concern for cardiovascular or neurological side effects, an overdose of Chantix warrants emergency medical attention and a call to the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Case reports are limited, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22673800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one report lists a fatality with overdose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although additional factors were present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone with a history of hypersensitivity (allergy) to varenicline should not take Chantix. Cautious consideration and discussion with a healthcare professional are needed before taking Chantix for anyone with a seizure history or risk, cardiovascular disease, psychiatric illness, alcohol use, or renal impairment (kidney disease) with a creatinine clearance of less than 30 mL\/minute. Age is another consideration as Chantix is only used in those 17 years and older. Lack of clinical trials in pregnancy and breastfeeding means that caution is needed before using the drug in these circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/chantix-recall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on all brand-name Chantix was announced by Pfizer in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that raise the risk of seizure are the primary drug interaction of note for Chantix and may need to be avoided or modified when taking Chantix. Examples of these medications include amifampridine, bupropion, and tramadol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concurrent nicotine use may increase the risk of headaches, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chantix may increase the effects of alcohol by lowering alcohol tolerance. Therefore, alcohol use should be curtailed or avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Chantix side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carefully follow the instructions on taking Chantix, as the dosing is typically initiated at a low dose of 0.5 mg once daily for three days and then twice daily for four days, before increasing to the full 1 mg dose twice daily thereafter. This titration may help to avoid side effects at initiation. If you\u2019re unsure how to take Chantix, ask a pharmacist to review the medication guide with you. The manufacturer also provides <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chantix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set a quit date for stopping smoking, often on day eight of Chantix therapy.
