That\u2019s right, your pup can have anxiety. In severe cases, it might require <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dog-anxiety-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment with veterinary medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like Prozac for dogs. Over the past few decades, there\u2019s been an increase in anxiety diagnoses in dogs, according to Dr. Amy Pike, a veterinary behaviorist in Northern Virginia and self-proclaimed \u201cpsychiatrist of the dog world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., 45 million homes have at least one dog. That\u2019s the highest dog ownership number reported since the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/News\/PressRoom\/Pages\/AVMA-releases-latest-stats-on-pet-ownership-and-veterinary-care.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Veterinary Medical Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first began measuring in 1982. There haven\u2019t been any good studies on the prevalence of canine anxiety as a whole, but Dr. Pike says noise aversion studies show that 60%\u201370% of dogs have a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fireworks-pets-dog-cat-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noise phobia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That could encompass behaviors such as fear of garbage trucks and panic during thunderstorms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help their pets, some owners are turning to antidepressant medicines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). A\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 national market survey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that nearly 10% of dog owners give their pets anti-anxiety medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is dog Prozac (fluoxetine)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When veterinarians prescribe Prozac (fluoxetine as generic) for dogs, it\u2019s the same medication you would receive from your doctor for a similar issue\u2014just in a different dosage. It\u2019s a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), meaning it blocks your body from reabsorbing serotonin. When levels of this neurotransmitter are higher in the brain, it\u2019s thought to improve mood. Does your dog need anti-anxiety medication?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Prozac prescribed for?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common reason veterinarians <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4838767\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribe Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is for anxiety disorders. But it can also help with a variety of other behavioral issues including aggression, compulsive disorders, phobias\/fear, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anxieties:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unspecified anxiety, situational anxiety, separation anxiety, adjusting to a new home<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Aggression:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unspecified aggression, general aggression, fear aggression, territorial aggression, aggression toward people or dogs, dominance aggression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Compulsive Disorders:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Phobias\/fear: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of noise, thunderstorms, and others<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other behaviors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chronic licking, and others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Is Prozac right for your dog?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before prescribing anti-anxiety meds, your vet needs to rule out a medical cause. Dog anxiety can be triggered by internal issues such as irritability caused by allergies or even pain caused by osteoarthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once an underlying condition is ruled out, a veterinary behaviorist will assess your dog\u2019s social and environmental history and anxiety episodes. \u201cIt\u2019s not really always about figuring out the \u2018why,\u2019 but how to move forward,\u201d Dr. Pike says. A diagnosis\u2014such as fear-based aggression with people and dogs\u2014will be followed by a prognosis. A treatment plan including medications and behavioral modification will also be made.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For dogs with mild anxiety<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Pike recommends natural calming pheromones and supplements. These include the Adaptil pheromone spray or collar and Anxitane S which is an L- theanine supplement that comes in a chewable treat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For dogs with more intense anxiety,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she recommends Prozac (generic fluoxetine). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lexapro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zoloft\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are other name brand psychotropic medications that are commonly used. There is also an FDA-approved veterinary brand of fluoxetine specifically made for dogs called Reconcile. Dr Pike likes this version because it comes in a flavored chew tab that most dogs will take as a treat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(And, yes, you can use the SingleCare card on any brand name or generic drugs that your vet prescribes that would also be prescribed to humans\u2014i.e., Prozac, Lexapro\u2014for savings up to 80%).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How long does it take Prozac to work in dogs?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the four-week mark, the medicine will \u201ckick in [and] will begin making the changes we need in the brain,\u201d Dr. Pike says\u2013by then, it will have taken full effect. About 30% of dogs will need to be switched to a different medicine, such as Lexapro or Zoloft, if Prozac doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Prozac dosage for dogs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your vet will determine the correct dosage of Prozac for your dog for best results. It typically comes in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dogtime.com\/dog-health\/53849-fluoxetine-dogs-uses-dosage-side-effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 mg or 20 mg tablets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is dosed at between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterinaryplace.com\/dog-medicine\/prozac-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.5 &#8211; 0.9 mg per pound each day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That means a ten pound dog might receive a dosage of 5 to 9 mg. Always follow the exact dosage instructions provided by your vet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/fluoxetine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss a dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a good rule of thumb is to give your dog the medication when you remember, but not if it\u2019s closer to the time that their next dose is due. You should never give your dog two doses together. Your veterinarian can provide you specific guidance on what to do if you feel uncertain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the side effects of fluoxetine for dogs?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Prozac may help improve behavioral problems and help your dog have less anxiety, if too many unpleasant side effects are present, it may not be a good match for your pet. Any side effects are usually gastrointestinal\u2014vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite\u2014which Dr. Pike says last only a day or two in dogs with a positive response to psychopharmaceuticals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, your dog may experience increased aggression, but it shouldn\u2019t cause behavior changes. The following are other potential side effects:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whining<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incoordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess salivation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch out for severe side effects that could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmeds.org\/pet-poison-control-list\/fluoxetine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signify an overdose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including agitation, aggression, loss of appetite\/refusal to eat, decreased heart rate, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty walking, hypersalivation, and seizures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin syndrome, caused by an overdose, is also a possibility, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/serotonin-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including an elevated heart rate, muscle tremors, rigid muscles, restless behavior (panting and pacing), agitation, disorientation, confusion, and seizures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog is under 6 months old, has a history of seizures, is allergic to Prozac, or taking MAO inhibitors, Prozac should be avoided. Caution should be used in dogs with diabetes mellitus, liver disease, kidney disease, or dogs who are pregnant or lactating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure your vet knows about any supplements or medications your dog is currently taking. Potential drug interactions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticoagulants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyproheptadine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diazepam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alprazolam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flea\/tick collars<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diabetes-in-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isoniazid<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methadone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pain-relief-for-dogs-cats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pentazocine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenytoin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propranolol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metoprolol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tramadol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trazodone-for-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What should you do beyond medication? Alternatives to Prozac<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac isn\u2019t your only option when dealing with challenging behaviors in your dog. Here are some options to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Try behavior modification<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication is not \u201ca magic wand that will cure an underlying disorder,\u201d Dr. Pike warns. In order to change the underlying emotion that\u2019s driving the dog\u2019s behavior, therapy is key. \u201cWithout the behavior modification,\u201d Dr. Pike says, \u201cit\u2019s very unlikely that the dog will ever come off the meds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the research bears that out. Daniel Mills, professor of veterinary behavioral medicine at the University of Lincoln, UK, wrote in a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1186\/s12917-015-0373-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Prozac and pets that drugs and a behavior modification program were \u201cessential for effective treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use a trainer along with medication<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Pike, who is one of fewer than 70 board-certified veterinary behaviorists in North America, uses medications to \u201cfacilitate the change.\u201d The medicine decreases the intensity of the fear and the arousals that drive the behavior; so, once the dog\u2019s fear threshold is lowered, a trainer can teach the dog alternative coping skills in a stressful situation. Pike says much of the work she does is also about teaching the owners how to handle their dog\u2019s behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Consider the longevity of symptoms<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment timeline correlates with how long the dog has been suffering. Dr. Pike advises that \u201chowever many years the behavior has been going on equals the number of months the treatment is expected to take.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re ready to get your dog on a treatment plan, ask your vet to recommend a veterinary behaviorist.
