You might want to reconsider that practice. Otherwise, you could find yourself dealing with side effects much more serious than the typical hangover\u2014problems like ulcers, stomach bleeding, liver damage, kidney damage, and more\u2014from mixing painkillers and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople need to be aware that alcohol is a drug,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/anna-lembke\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Lembke, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of addiction medicine at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford University School of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Palo Alto, California. \u201cAnd using alcohol in combination with any other drugs, including OTC painkillers, can exacerbate side effects or lead to drug-drug interactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Tylenol and alcohol<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetaminophen (better known under by the brand name Tylenol), for example, is well-known for its potential to cause liver damage. So is alcohol. And, the risk of damage increases when the two are mixed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/acetaminophen-avoiding-liver-injury\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FDA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlcohol and Tylenol in combination tax the liver\u2014and the combination can be cumulative and synergistic, in a bad way, over time,\u201d Dr. Lembke says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ibuprofen and alcohol<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), like ibuprofen and naproxen, aren\u2019t any better, says Heather Free, Pharm.D., a pharmacist in Columbus, Ohio, and spokesperson for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacist.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Pharmacists Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Taking ibuprofen and other NSAIDS alone can damage the stomach and increase your chances of gastrointestinal bleeding and\/or getting an ulcer. Combining ibuprofen and alcohol amplifies the danger, she says. Furthermore, if you are already at risk for kidney problems (because of diabetes or family history of kidney disease), drinking alcohol while taking ibuprofen is even more precarious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9502 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072120_tylenol-1024x480.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating the risks of mixing alcohol and meds\" width=\"604\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072120_tylenol-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072120_tylenol-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072120_tylenol-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072120_tylenol-1536x720.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_072120_tylenol.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is it ever safe to mix painkillers and alcohol?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So does all of this mean that you should never, ever take pain medication for a headache after having a drink or two? Not exactly. The problems occur when alcohol is consumed alongside painkillers regularly, Dr. Lembke explains. \u201cIf it is a small amount of alcohol and [you are] taking the painkiller as indicated on the bottle, it is generally not a problem,\u201d she says. So, a moderate amount of alcohol and the recommended dose of pain medication should be safe on occasion as long as you are not taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that might interact with alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What pain reliever <\/b><b><i>can <\/i><\/b><b>I take with alcohol?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it\u2019s fairly safe to occasionally take a low dose of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or naproxen if you\u2019ve had a small amount of alcohol. However, because of the potential for long-term consequences, it is still prudent to avoid mixing painkillers with alcohol, Drs. Lembke and Free both emphasize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRepeated use will just progress the damage, making it difficult for the body to rebound back,\u201d Dr. Free says. Instead, she advises rehydrating your body with water and plenty of electrolytes as treatment options for a hangover. And Dr. Lembke says it is better to just avoid drinking to the point of needing a painkiller altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-hangover-cures-that-work\/\">14 hangover cures that work<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you are drinking so much that you have a hangover, you might want to look at your drinking habits,\u201d she says. \u201cBecause if you have had enough that you have a hangover, you have had too much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general rule of thumb for safe alcohol consumption, she says, is no more than seven drinks per week and definitely no more than three drinks on any one occasion. \u201cAnything above that is considered risky drinking and is associated with all sorts of adverse health outcomes,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while Dr. Lembke says it would be very surprising for a related medical emergency to occur if you are following these guidelines and don\u2019t have any other risk factors, she also urges people to see a doctor right away for serious side effects like abdominal or stomach pain, altered consciousness, or jaundice.
