The primary use of Victoza is in the control of blood glucose (sugar) for the treatment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another indication for using Victoza is to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events like heart attacks among those with Type 2 diabetes. Accordingly, this drug is often a preferred choice in those with diabetes and heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take Victoza as a daily injection under the skin, using a pen device. Doses escalate from the lead-in dose of 0.6 mg daily in the first week to a standard dose of 1.2 mg daily and a maximum dose of 1.8 mg daily if needed. Side effects of Victoza range from relatively common but mild to rare but potentially severe. This article will focus on these adverse effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/victoza\/what-is\"><b>What is Victoza?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-victoza-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common side effects of Victoza<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Victoza side effects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia (indigestion), or appetite loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea or constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper respiratory infection or nasopharyngitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated bilirubin, lipase, or amylase levels (blood tests of liver or pancreatic function)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, appetite loss but not weight loss was listed among the side effects after the initial clinical trials of Victoza. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19853906\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have subsequently found that liraglutide is associated with dose-dependent weight loss significantly more than placebo, even at the doses of liraglutide used for diabetes. In fact, the manufacturer of Victoza, Novo Nordisk, also makes liraglutide under the brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Based on its weight loss effect, Saxenda is indicated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2014\/206321Orig1s000lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for chronic weight management, using a higher liraglutide dose of 3 mg injected daily. Weight loss is not dependent on liraglutide causing nausea, so a side effect of significant nausea should not be tolerated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common adverse reaction to Victoza is nausea. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/victoza.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the drug\u2019s medication guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this symptom is reported by 18% of individuals taking the Victoza 1.2 mg daily dose and 20% taking the 1.8 mg dose. Nausea from the drug is thought to arise from a gastroparesis effect (slowing of stomach emptying). Fortunately, nausea from GLP-1 agonists can subside with continued use or with a lesser dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If nausea is severe, persistent, or accompanied by vomiting or pain, seeking medical attention is advisable. These symptoms could indicate a more serious reaction to Victoza, such as cholelithiasis (gallstones), cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), or renal failure (kidney function impairment). These have all been mentioned in case reports, but causality from Victoza has not been established.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Victoza<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects of Victoza are possible and may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid C-cell cancer in animal studies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) risk or papillary thyroid carcinoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity allergic reactions or anaphylaxis (a serious allergic reaction that can be life-threatening)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angioedema (sudden swelling of the face or body)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute renal failure (sudden kidney failure) or chronic renal failure exacerbation (worsening of kidney function in one who has pre-existing kidney impairment)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallbladder problems including cholecystitis or cholelithiasis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"thyroid-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid cancer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoza.com\/faq\/Possible-side-effects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In studies of rodents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, liraglutide was associated with higher rates of thyroid C-cell tumors. It is unknown whether liraglutide has the same effect in humans. Nonetheless, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/questions-and-answers-safety-requirements-victoza-liraglutide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA has a black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Victoza regarding this concern and warning against the use of the drug by anyone with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or a history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). These different circumstances are mentioned because they are associated with a higher risk of thyroid tumors. Signs of such a tumor could be a lump in the neck, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), difficulty breathing, or hoarseness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do Victoza side effects last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, nausea from GLP-1 agonists like Victoza may subside with continued use or with a lesser dose. Other common side effects typically resolve when the medication is stopped. The list of serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, renal failure, and pancreas or gallbladder problems, may require emergent treatment as well as drug discontinuation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza contraindications and warnings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Abuse and dependence<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza is not habit-forming, and a withdrawal syndrome does not occur if stopped. Discontinuing Victoza should be done upon the medical advice of a healthcare professional because elevated blood sugars could recur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Overdose<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overdose of Victoza should prompt one to seek emergency medical attention and call the Poison Helpline at 1-800-222-1222.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Restrictions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza can be used in adults, including seniors, with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The drug can also be used by children 10 years of age and older with Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not intended for use in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 diabetes mellitus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of medical conditions such as pancreatitis, medullary thyroid cancer (personally or in the family), hypersensitivity to this drug or drug class, or MEN 2 should also preclude the use of Victoza.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on a lack of data to demonstrate safety, the use of alternatives to Victoza is generally suggested during pregnancy and breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza and other medications for diabetes can interact with a substantial list of medications. The prescribing medical provider should review the entire medication list, including supplements and over-the-counter medications, before initiating Victoza. The following are some specific drug interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cidofovir is contraindicated (should not be used) with Victoza, due to potential bone marrow and kidney side effects with concurrent use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except for other GLP 1 agonist drugs, additional diabetic medications, including metformin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can be used cautiously in combination with Victoza. Blood sugar levels should be monitored to look for hypoglycemia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/loop-diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loop diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as budesonide, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/quinolones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quinolone antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as levofloxacin, can reduce the effectiveness of diabetic medications like Victoza.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/aminoglycosides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aminoglycoside antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as gentamicin, may need to be avoided due to a possible increased risk of kidney problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid Victoza side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use Victoza at the same time every day. The particular time is not important, but your healthcare provider may have a particular recommendation for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotate body sites used for injections. Avoid using the same injection site every time.
