Now, you have an invitation from a friend to come over for a glass of wine that evening to catch up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re wondering, is it safe to mix Trintellix and alcohol?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Trintellix?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix (vortioxetine) is in a class of medications known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unlike some other SSRIs such as Prozac, Trintellix hasn&#8217;t been on the market long. It received its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK548752\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approval for use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States in 2013. It&#8217;s a type of antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDD is also known as depression and can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/trials\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of hopelessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have MDD, these symptoms affect you almost daily for at least two weeks at a time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not clear exactly how Trintellix works in the body, but it&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.trintellix.com\/treatment\/how-trintellix-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to increase serotonin, an important neurotransmitter in the brain. Low levels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK545168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be linked to symptoms of depression. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-45238 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521.png\" alt=\"The safety of Trintellix and alcohol \" width=\"1920\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521.png 1920w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mixup_Chart_110521-1536x720.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to mix alcohol with Trintellix?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is no, it&#8217;s not recommended to drink alcohol while you&#8217;re taking Trintellix. But it\u2019s not black and white when it comes to avoiding alcohol <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while on Trintellix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trintellix&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=1a5b68e2-14d0-419d-9ec6-1ca97145e838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn&#8217;t list alcohol as a contraindication or warning. Also, the effects of Trintellix on the liver appear to be minimal, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riahealth.com\/team\/john-mendelson-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Mendelson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the chief medical officer at Ria Health. There&#8217;s a chance you could experience abnormal liver enzyme levels, but elevations of these enzymes are rare. Over time, as you continue to take Trintellix, those levels would go back down to normal. Also, with the available data, there haven&#8217;t been instances of sudden liver damage or jaundice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while Trintellix rarely causes extensive damage to the liver, there are reasons you should be cautious when taking this medication with alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking that glass of wine can increase the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trintellix-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you might experience while taking Trintellix. These side effects can include feeling dizzy, feeling sleepy, and having trouble focusing. If you experience these side effects, you may feel them even more if you drink alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo amount of alcohol is safe,&#8221; explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellness-doctors.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seema Bonney<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the founder and medical director of the Anti-Aging &amp; Longevity Center of Philadelphia. &#8220;Alcohol and Trintellix shouldn&#8217;t be consumed together as [the combination] may cause dizziness and vomiting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you drink alcohol while taking other antidepressants?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states Trintellix doesn\u2019t &#8220;increase the impairment of mental and motor skills caused by alcohol.&#8221; This doesn&#8217;t mean there&#8217;s no risk, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol itself is a central nervous system depressant. It can cause you to become drowsy, feel uncoordinated, and have slurred speech. The problem is, antidepressants can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/FAQ\/Mental-Health-Medication-FAQ\/Can-I-drink-alcohol-while-taking-antidepressants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause the same effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Bonney, since alcohol is a depressant it could actually worsen your symptoms of depression over time. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6826824\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic alcohol use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been linked to lower serotonin levels. Since the goal of taking Trintellix is to increase your serotonin levels, the alcohol you drink can undo all the work your antidepressant is trying to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/harmful-interactions-mixing-alcohol-with-medicines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alcohol shouldn&#8217;t be used with medications to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of these medications include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abilify (aripiprazole)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta (duloxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effexor (venlafaxine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invega (paliperidone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro (escitalopram)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil (paroxetine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac (fluoxetine)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft (sertraline)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a type of medication used to treat depression, can cause dangerously high blood pressure when mixed with alcohol. MAOIs can prevent the breakdown of tyramine, a substance found in certain foods and alcoholic drinks that can cause high blood pressure in large amounts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin (bupropion) can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2020\/018644s057lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower your tolerance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for alcohol. This means it can take less alcohol than you would usually drink in order to feel its effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zoloft-and-alcohol\/\"><b>Zoloft and alcohol<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does alcohol make depression worse?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking alcohol can make your depression symptoms worse. For some people, alcohol is used to self-treat depression. Alcohol can make you feel relaxed and less anxious in the short term, but it can also cause you to feel more depressed in the long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;One big concern with drinking alcohol is that it actually undermines the primary medical purpose of taking an antidepressant,&#8221; explains Dr. Bonney. &#8220;It makes you more likely to have worsening depression or anxiety.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Bonney, drinking alcohol while on antidepressants can also cause:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts and ideas\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness and nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slurred speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired judgment and motor skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone has their own unique situation and comfort level with drinking alcohol.
