When taken in high doses, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and DHA significantly lower both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triglycerides<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LDL<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cbad\u201d) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cholesterol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is very similar to an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acid<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it does have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and potentially serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-side-effects\">Common side effects of Vascepa<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/654705\/Vascepa\/Adverse-Reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding, including nosebleeds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle and joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the extremities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gout-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gout<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"serious-side-effects\">Serious side effects of Vascepa<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effects of Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/atrial-fibrillation-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrial fibrillation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrial flutter<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"bleeding\">Vascepa and bleeding<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and DHA, prevent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">platelets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the blood cells responsible for clotting, from clumping together to form blood clots. As a result, bleeding problems are the most common and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious side effect of Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or any high-dose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In clinical studies, approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Vascepa-icosapent-ethyl-2569\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced bleeding episodes of some kind and 3% experienced severe bleeding episodes. Bleeding is an important and potentially hazardous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be cautious about prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to people with pre-existing bleeding problems or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for bleeding, including taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"atrial-fibrillation\">Vascepa and atrial fibrillation<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment is associated with a higher <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incidence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and atrial flutter. In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/Vascepa-icosapent-ethyl-2569\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients treated with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> required <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hospitalization<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or flutter compared to 2% of patients receiving a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those who already have atrial fibrillation are\u00a0 most likely to be hospitalized while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and atrial flutter are types of heart rhythm problems affecting the upper chambers of the heart. Talk to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider if any of the following symptoms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are experienced while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular or fast heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightheadedness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-do-side-effects-last\">How long do side effects last?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a half-life of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9c1a2828-1583-4414-ab22-a60480e8e508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">89 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014almost four days. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as bleeding, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, joint pain, and swelling should fade by that time. At the very least, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shouldn\u2019t persist for longer than three weeks, which is how long it takes for the majority of the medication to be eliminated after discontinuing it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as severe bleeding episodes or blood clots caused by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have long-term complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Vascepa contraindications &amp; warnings<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription drugs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fish oils<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generally do not have a long or worrisome list of potential problems. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a high-dose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it requires more caution than simply taking an occasional omega-3 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse and dependence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) does not consider <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EPA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">icosapent ethyl<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or other dietary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lipids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be addictive drugs or have a potential for abuse. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be discontinued without causing withdrawal symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdose<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally not considered a problem in healthy adults. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used in people with often serious metabolic, heart, or circulation problems. High doses of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could cause potentially serious side effects such as bleeding or irregular heartbeats. If too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken, always call a poison helpline or get medical attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restrictions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has few restrictions. The only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contraindication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a known <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypersensitivity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to any of the ingredients in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this does not necessarily include allergies to fish or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shellfish<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=9c1a2828-1583-4414-ab22-a60480e8e508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are uncertain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if fish or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shellfish<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allergies make people more likely to have an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so they will advise patients with these allergies to watch for signs of an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, throat, or mouth. If an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is suspected, immediately stop taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and get medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interferes with the body\u2019s ability to form blood clots, so there\u2019s an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of prolonged or serious bleeding. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used cautiously in people who have an increased risk of bleeding or take blood thinners such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people are at an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or atrial flutter requiring <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hospitalization<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely in people who already have been diagnosed with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be prescribed to people with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but they may require heart monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should inform their prescribing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers before taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascepa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
